Across the Fire Emblem franchise, few types of units have been as consistently amazing as wyvern riders and wyvern lords. Flying units tend to generally have high combative stats, but while the incredible mobility of pegasus knights is usually off-set by their fragility, wyvern riders are able to easily maneuver around maps while dealing significant damage.

This often leads to them being among the strongest units at a player’s disposal in every Fire Emblem game. However, wyvern riders are not always of equal quality, and some are naturally stronger than others.

10 Heath

While Heath from Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade is far from an over-powered unit, he has the potential to be the most dangerous flier at a player’s disposal in that game. Recruitable in the Kinship’s Bond chapter, unlike many of the other units on this list, Heath requires a little love to be useful.

Joining as a level 7 wyvern rider at a time when the player already has numerous promoted units at their disposal, Heath notably has a strong blend of solid strength, skill, and speed growth rates that allow him to potentially deal more damage than any other flier in the game.

9 Beruka

An unpromoted wyvern rider available in Fire Emblem Fates: Conquest and Fire Emblem Fates: Revelation, Beruka can be an excellent addition to a player’s army, functioning as some redundancy and backup for another excellent flier later on this list.

With a shockingly high defense growth alongside her solid offense stats, Beruka can deal great damage and take a hit when needed. Additionally, Beruka’s personal skill, Opportunist, enables her to deal extra damage when a foe can’t counterattack, allowing her to make great use of hand axes.

8 Jill

One of the premier wyvern riders in Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn, Jill is a godsend in both games in which she appears. Recruited in chapter 12 of Path of Radiance, Jill has solid base stats and can grow into one of the most versatile units in the campaign through her access to flying and the game’s improved version of canto.

In Radiant Dawn, Jill joins the player’s army in Chapter 6 of Part One and is immediately one of its most invaluable assets due to her comparably incredible base stats and mobility.

7 Dean

Dean is a dragon knight in Fire Emblem: Thracia 776 that automatically joins the player’s ranks in Chapter 14. Despite his late join time, like Jill in Part One of Radiant Dawn, Dean immediately becomes one of the most useful units in the game.

With an A rank in both swords and lances, Dean can deal impactful damage with his silver lance while using his mount to easily maneuver through the larger maps of Thracia 776.

6 Cormag

Cormag is the first and only recruitable wyvern rider in Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones. He is also one of the most outstanding units in the game. Joining as a level 10 or 11 wyvern rider depending on which route is chosen, Cormag can be instantly promoted if the player so desires.

With impressive base stats as well as solid offense growth rates, Cormag can be where he’s needed and flexibly attack both near and far with javelins, all while being able to employ rescue-drop strategies.

5 Melady

Melady is a wyvern rider in Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade that is often noted for her absolutely incredible combination of base stats and growth rates. Like Cormag, Melady joins the army at a high enough level to be instantly promoted, although players have the option to allow her to gain some levels before doing so.

Able to easily maneuver around the largest of The Binding Blade’s maps, Melady can deal substantial damage anywhere she’s needed.

4 Claude

Claude is the lord of the Golden Deer house in Fire Emblem: Three Houses. Once players reach the War phase, Claude gains access to absolutely stellar personal classes in the form of the Wyvern Master and Barbarossa.

With high movement, constant access to pass, and a stellar personal Bow in Failnaught, Claude is among the most potent units in all of Three Houses.

3 Camilla

Camilla is by and large one of the most over-powered units in any recent Fire Emblem game, joining the army as a pre-promoted malig knight in Fire Emblem Fates: Conquest and Fire Emblem Fates: Revelation.

With Camilla’s incredible base stats that are accentuated by stellar growth rates, one would be hard-pressed to find a unit capable of reliably dealing more damage than the princess of Nohr. Camilla’s personal ability, Rose’s Thorns, even allows her adjacent allies to deal additional damage, further extending Camilla’s damage output.

2 Haar (Radiant Dawn)

Due to the structure of Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn, there are very few characters in the game that have consistent availability. Despite this, Haar happens to be one of the most frequently accessible units in the campaign while being one of the most over-powered.

With base stats that would be well suited for the later chapters of the game, Haar can obliterate enemy units with ease, all while toating some of the most devastating offensive capabilities of any unit. Additionally, while flying units are traditionally weak to bows, in Radiant Dawn wyvern riders are instead vulnerable to thunder magic, a type of weapon that appears much less frequently.

1 Everyone In Three Houses

While this may seem like a cop-out, the Wyvern Lord class in Fire Emblem: Three Houses is without a doubt one of the most over-powered in the series history, and it can be accessed by every single character in the game. While it’s not in a player’s best interest to make every unit a wyvern lord, it’s the optimal class choice for nearly every physically offensive unit in the game.

With high base stats, great mobility, canto, and the ability to instantly remove one’s weakness to arrows by dismounting, it’s hard to find a drawback of the Wyvern Lord class in Three Houses. When even some of the most lackluster units in the game can turn into veritable monsters through this class, its sheer might can’t be understated.
