Among Us is a fantastic deception game in which imposters must secretly eliminate their fellow crewmates. The others must put their detective skills to good use before it’s too late. The game is regularly updated, recently introducing a new airship map that is full of Easter eggs. Among Us is a game that has players doubting their friends again and again for hours of fun.
But, Among Us isn’t the only way to experience that sense of paranoia and deception. There are many fantastic board games that will leave players questioning who they can trust. From simple to complex, there’s a board game out there for every fan of Among Us.
10 Specter Ops
Specter Ops is a stealth game in which secret agents attempt to infiltrate a sinister facility. One player will try to avoid the others, who are ruthlessly tracking them down. As with Among Us, the infiltrator must attempt to outwit the group to succeed.
The hunters can only spot the infiltrator if they are in direct line of sight. Fortunately, they have their own tricks to help track down the spy, including a hovercar to speed around on. Specter Ops harnesses the excitement of hide-and-seek and turns it into a fantastic game for both sides. It’s just a shame there aren’t any handy vents to jump into to flee the scene.
9 Avalon: The Resistance
Avalon: The Resistance drops the sci-fi setting for medieval fantasy, but it keeps the deception themes Among Us fans love. Players must attempt to succeed on five quests. Sounds easy enough, but unfortunately, there are minions of Mordred hidden within their ranks. Players must try to figure out who is on the good side before too many missions fail.
Avalon is a game that works best with a large group, just like Among Us. The games can get pretty heated, as players must gain everyone’s trust. There are also extra roles that players can include to enhance the deceptive mind games involved.
8 Secret Hitler
Secret Hitler is another hidden role game in which players must figure out who Hitler is before they rise to power. Each round, players must elect a President and a Chancellor, who will enact policies. Unfortunately, no player ever has all the necessary information needed to figure out who is who. The more fascist policies get approved, the more power the President gains, which can be troublesome.
As with Among Us, Secret Hitler requires constant discussion. The fascists have to spin stories to explain why evil policies have been approved. Meanwhile, the liberals must desperately attempt to stop Hitler from becoming Chancellor or lose the game. The rounds are short but intense and create that overwhelming sense of distrust among friends… in a fun way.
7 Who Goes There?
Who Goes There? is a board game based on the book of the same name, which was also the inspiration for the movie The Thing. Who Goes There? perfectly encapsulates the feeling of paranoia. As players await the arrival of a helicopter, they must work together to survive and not get infected by a mysterious alien.
Players could go an entire game without an imposter in their team, but the lingering doubt and lack of trust will remain in every playthrough. It’s a challenging game of survival, even without the betrayal element included. This game is a little underrated due to its complexity and long playtime (it takes around three hours to complete), but it is a fantastic experience and worth checking out.
6 One Night Ultimate Werewolf
The classic Werewolf party game has been transformed into a ten-minute experience. One Night Ultimate Werewolf is a game in which players have to question what team the other players are on (werewolves or villagers) and if they themselves have also unknowingly switched sides. Everyone has their eyes closed for the first half of the game, so in the morning, everyone is clueless as to what exactly happened the night before. Players then have five minutes to discuss, lie and interrogate one another in an attempt to figure out who the werewolves are.
This party game works at a wide range of player counts. In addition, different expansions add new roles such as vampires, superheroes, and aliens. All of this accumulates into a chaotic game of hilarious confusion.
5 Battlestar Galactica
Players wishing that Among Us was a more extended experience should check out Battlestar Galactica. Players must attempt to aid humanity’s survival while also trying to figure out who are secretly Cylons. Battlestar Galactica is a game in which players have to play a long con, subtly sabotaging the group’s efforts along the journey.
Battlestar Galactica can be a complicated game to get to grips with. There are many unique roles, abilities, and tasks to complete. Games last around two hours but provide an incredibly immersive experience, allowing the players to feel like they are characters from the show. Even when Cylon players have been caught out, they can continue to play and cause chaos for the others, now fighting out in the open instead of in secrecy.
4 Nemesis
Nemesis adds a hefty dose of horror into the sci-fi genre. Nemesis is all about attempting to rid a spaceship of deadly, unstoppable aliens, which are far more terrifying (and less adorably dressed) than the imposters in Among Us. Each character has a unique selection of skills that can help them try to survive. There is a lot of variety with this game, with multiple objectives to complete that will alter everyone’s motivations. Sometimes players work together. Other times they are eager to betray one another.
This game is costly, so it is best to research Nemesis and see if it’s a good fit before investing in it. It is incredibly atmospheric and thrilling. But, it is pretty complex and can be highly unforgiving to players.
3 Coup
Coup takes the bluffing chaos of Among Us’ emergency meetings and turns it into a fast-paced elimination game. Coup is all about pretending to be in various roles at the risk of being called out by the other players for lying. If the accused is lying, they lose a life. If they were telling the truth, the accusor loses a life instead. With only two lives each, players have to make sure they are confident when their friends are fibbing or not.
The game comes in a compact little box, perfect for bringing it to all social events. The games are rapid and will have players eager for another chance to fool everyone at the table again and again.
2 Escape From The Aliens In Outer Space
Escape From The Aliens In Outer Space is a fantastic game with a unique take on the hidden role and movement genre. In Among Us, the imposters know who one another are and can use this to their advantage to spin tall tales together and fool the others. In Escape From The Aliens In Outer Space, everyone’s roles are hidden. No one knows who anyone is at all, or even where they are on the board. All information is secret.
This game is set on a spaceship invaded by dangerous aliens. Humans must attempt to reach one of the escape pods, ditching their fellow crewmates. Aliens must try to track down each human and eliminate them. It’s an intense game in which players must piece little details together and get to grips with their situation before it’s too late.
1 Don’t Get Got
Don’t Get Got is an experience that even non-gamers will enjoy. The game revolves around a group attempting to accomplish silly little tasks without getting caught by their rivals. This board game is more like an event than a physical game. Once everyone has their secret missions, the game is always in the background rather than a focus. Don’t Get Got could go on for a day or even a few weeks.
Just like Among Us, Don’t Get Got ensures everyone is second-guessing one another at all times. It is difficult to know when one player is about to fool another. However, the little challenges are always fun, and it is incredibly satisfying to accomplish them (and boast to the other players about it).
