Breath of the Wild showed fans how the Great Calamity brought destruction upon Hyrule. It affected the lives of everyone in the kingdom. Many of Hyrule’s settlements were reduced to ruins. However, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity will deep dive into The Legend of Zelda’s history and tell the story of what happened 100 years ago.
In this prequel, Zelda fans will be able to explore places that they had already seen in Breath the Wild. But this time, they won’t be overrun by nature or broken down and destroyed. What ruins might players be able to revisit in Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity?
10 Coliseum Ruins
The Coliseum was once Hyrule’s largest entertainment facility. During the tragic event of the Great Calamity, it was a place that sustained reasonable damage and was taken over by Malice. It is currently inhabited by a single Lynel and various kinds of monsters.
It is not known why the Coliseum suffered so much damage as it was a place for entertainment, where events were hosted so that Hylians could show off their strength. Perhaps Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity will be able to provide some answers.
9 Temple of Time
The Temple of Time is an iconic location in the Zelda series. It has undoubtedly made an appearance in most of its games. In Breath of The Wild, players can find the Temple of Time in the Great Plateau. It is one of the many structures that has been damaged by the forces of evil.
It is here that the Old Man meets Link before handing him the Paraglider. He reveals his identity as King Rhoam, so it must’ve been a particularly special place to him on the Plateau. While the game was still a work in progress, the King’s grave was supposed to be found near the Temple of Time. Perhaps in order to aim at the idea of a huge battle near the Temple.
8 Eastern Abbey
Near the Temple of Time, there are the ruins of what once was an abbey. It is littered with broken-down Guardians from the battles that happened a century ago. The gates leading to the Great Plateau were blocked, most likely by Hylians, trying to protect their sacred land.
The Great Calamity caused such destruction. It tried to consume places of faith with it. From the descriptions found in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild - Creating a Champion, published by Dark Horse, it is clear that a battle took place in these areas. So, will fans be able to live these events through Link when playing Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity?
7 Royal Ancient Tech Lab
The Royal Ancient Tech Lab was a place for research and discovery, but only some of its outer walls survived. In Breath of the Wild, there are no research materials that could link this place to its original purpose.
The book Creating a Champion mentions that “the thoroughness of its destruction feels intentional.” Could Ganon have something against the existence of Tech Labs across Hyrule?
It is definitely possible that more will be revealed about this place in Age of Calamity. However, it isn’t clear since during Nintendo Treehouse: Live, the map showed no signs of the Lab nor of its ruins.
6 Rauru Settlement Ruins
The Rauru Settlement Ruins, named after Rauru the Ancient Sage of Light, are ruins of a settlement just south of the training camp. It met its demise as it was too close to Hyrule Castle.
Before the settlement was destroyed by the Great Calamity, it was the village where the Hylian Blacksmith Guild was located. During Nintendo Treehouse: Live, it was shown that this place was going to be where players could fuse their weapons. Perhaps it will possible to visit and see how the Blacksmith Guild functioned when it was an active location.
5 Lanayru Promenade
Once a place of beauty, Lanayru Promenade, in the Necluda region, is now destroyed and infested with monsters. However, it is still a location that holds much significance. It is near the Promenade that Link unlocks one of his last memories. It was on Lanayru Road that Link, Zelda, and the four Champions stood when Ganon awoke.
It is one of the places of worship destroyed by the Calamity. In order to reach Mt. Lanayru, the Promenade had to be crossed. Pilgrims very often followed this path to reach the Spring of Wisdom. The attack on the people’s faith is something quite evident, many sacred places were affected by the Great Calamity.
4 Hyrule Castle Town Ruins
Hyrule Castle Town was where the Guardians first attacked. Hyrule Castle Town is near the Sacred Grounds, a place that was visible in the 13 minute-long live video of Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity gameplay, at the Tokyo Game Show 2020.
Images of the town before it was destroyed are featured in Creating a Champion. The book shows an image of the town’s Central Square and the streets filled with people looking to exchange goods. There are many houses as it is the largest city in the kingdom of Hyrule.
3 Mabe Village Ruins
According to the book, after the attack on Hyrule Castle Town, it is more than likely that Mabe Village was targeted right after as it was the closest settlement. And, as a village located near the center of Hyrule Field, it would’ve been difficult for its inhabitants to escape the Guardians’ onslaught.
Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity will focus on the battles that took place 100 years ago. It is plausible that Hyrule Castle Town and Mabe Village will be the center of one of the many battles that fans will be able to participate in Age of Calamity.
2 Akkala Citadel Ruins
Akkala Citadel was considered the most impenetrable fortress in all of Hyrule. It was in the Citadel that one of the final battles took place. It was designed to be able to defend against any enemy as it was equipped with cannons. These cannons can actually be seen in the game’s announcement trailer.
However, no one could’ve foreseen the force that Ganon would have supporting him. Unfortunately, the Hyrulean forces were not enough to defend it and the fortress fell. Nevertheless, it was one of the most epic battles that the kingdom of Hyrule ever had to endure. Its ruins still show signs of those that inhabited the citadel.
1 Fort Hateno
It was near Fort Hateno that Link finally lost his strength and collapsed before being taken to the Shrine of Ressurection. But before falling, he ran with the princess from Hyrule field, through the forests, and slew many Guardians along the way. Leaving a field of broken-down machines in his wake.
Fort Hateno, although a fortress, did not have the same defensive capabilities as Akkala Citadel. However, it miraculously provided a successful defense. The history surrounding these ruins is likely to be important in Age of Calamity.
