There are tons of great retro games one can play on their Switch right now. This includes the dozens of classic titles that people can get through their Nintendo subscriptions or through packages like the ACA Neo Geo. There are also a lot of great arcade classics not specifically from Nintendo’s acclaimed library but classic nonetheless.
However, Nintendo could do a lot more to appease fans than what they are serving now though. From the Game Boy to the Wii, there are a lot of titles trapped on those consoles that could also be explored via retro channels. They don’t even have to be free. To add some variety, only one game per series will be highlighted.
10 Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins
Super Mario Land 2 is a forgotten entry in the series. That happens a lot with portable games like this, especially since they don’t often get console ports later down the line.
Super Mario Land 2’s level design is every bit as amazing as that of Super Mario World. It still holds up incredibly well and there are a bunch of color hacks out there to make it look more modern even by Game Boy standards.
9 Pokemon Red & Blue
Going back to the original Pokemon games can be tricky. Red & Blue were released on the 3DS’ eShop which was a fun nostalgia trip. The problem is that, for many reasons, they can seem a bit archaic by today’s standards.
Modern Pokemon entries in the series are so fast and friendly to new users thanks to the quality of life improvements that have been implemented over the decades. Still, getting Pokemon Red & Blue re-released again but on the Nintendo Switch would be sweet.
8 Metroid Fusion
The hype for the Metroid series is at an all-time high thanks to Metroid Dread being announced. Gamers are hungry to play any of these games as they prepare for the highly-anticipated return of one of the greatest 2D franchises of all time, and Metroid Fusion is no exception.
There has never been a better time to re-release this GBA game on Switch along with Metroid Zero Mission. The most easily available these games are, the better, as Metroid deserves to be experienced by just about everyone.
7 Castlevania: Aria Of Sorrow
There was a recent rumor going around that the three Castlevania games on GBA could be getting a re-released collection. That would be incredible but if those rumors don’t pan out then Nintendo should at least try to get Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow on the Switch.
This game is the best of the GBA trilogy and stands toe to toe with Symphony of the Night as the greatest entry in the series. It’s a fantastic Metroidvania filled with tons of areas to explore, monsters to fight, and weapons to collect.
6 Star Fox 64
Nintendo keeps trying to reboot Star Fox and make it something it’s not. Instead of going back to the drawing board, Nintendo should try its hand at replicating Star Fox 64. They already updated it on 3DS, which was great.
Porting the 3DS version or perhaps an even cleaner iteration to the Switch would be wise. As it is often regarded as the best game in the series, what’s there to lose with bringing back this N64 classic?
5 The Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time
2021 is The Legend of Zelda’s 35th anniversary. Nintendo has planned plenty of treats for Zelda fans out there to help celebrate the series, including a remaster of Skyward Sword and a special Game and Watch bundle.
However, Nintendo hasn’t announced the one game fans have been clamoring to get a re-release of for years now: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. This entry also got a good 3DS update, and it would look even better on the Switch.
4 Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes
An often forgotten remake from the GameCube era, Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes was a bit controversial upon release. While it looked better than ever, some thought the new cutscenes were too goofy even by the standards of the series.
Others thought the first-person mode made the game too easy during some points in the campaign. Regardless of how someone feels about The Twin Snakes, it would still be nice to play some kind of Metal Gear game on a Nintendo console again.
3 Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem
Silicon Knights was the developer on Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes. The company also developed its own game, Eternal Darkness, which was a horror game ahead of its time.
Like Kojima’s games, Eternal Darkness played with player expectations such as messing with TV settings. For the Twitch crowd that loves streaming horror games, this would be a great GameCube title to bring back specifically for that audience.
2 Dragon Quest 9: Sentinels Of The Starry Skies
The Switch has an amazing Dragon Quest game right now in Dragon Quest 11, one of the best entries in the acclaimed JRPG franchise. As amazing as that title is, it does not have multiplayer functionality like Dragon Quest 9. Dragon Quest 11 also doesn’t have character customization and a robust job system.
Dragon Quest 9 was one of the more unique co-op experiences on the DS, so getting it back in some form would be great. As Dragon Quest has only grown more popular in the West since 2010, there should also be a bigger audience for this entry.
1 Wii Sports
The Wii was a phenomenon when it launched in 2006. This can be credited to games like Wii Sports and Wii Play. Yes, they were simple games but they worked well to attract all types of people, even those who would not consider themselves “gamers.”
Wii Sports is fun and intuitive; the ultimate pick-up and play game. Since the Switch has motion controls capabilities, it’s honestly odd that this classic Wii title hasn’t been re-released yet.
