With Valentine’s Day fast approaching and contact being restricted in some areas, it might be time to get a little more innovative with romantic nights in. Fortunately, video games are a great way to bring a pair together in more ways than one.
Games allow players to be as competitive or as cooperative as they want to be, and what better way to celebrate Valentine’s day than by winning a game together with one’s sweetheart? Game Night doesn’t always have to be a battle of the partners, so why not make it one where they join forces and knit themselves closer together?
10 Minecraft
Who said gaming together had to be complicated? Sometimes all a couple needs is a pair of controllers, a blocky virtual world, and an avoidance of Creepers. Minecraft is perfect for those couples looking to literally build together.
Build, survive, explore, explode, whatever suits the occasion. With two imaginations, anything is possible.
9 Fortnite
Sometimes, gamers just want to turn their brains off for a little shooting and looting. Whether on a team or against each other, Fortnite has all of that in spades for couples looking for a little action.
Take on NPC bad guys or enemy squads in online play, whatever they choose to do, cooperative play in this battle royale is almost practically essential for victory. Why not get one’s significant other in the mix?
8 Stardew Valley
Stardew Valley is one of those games that was simply made for couples. From its cutesy pixel-art style to its simple-yet-addictive gameplay, it’s a fun slice of 16-bit escapism for couples to dive headfirst into.
The game allows couples to build a home, grow a garden, raise livestock, sell produce at the market, or otherwise explore an enchanted island. It’s a rustic adventure from the comfort of home.
7 Animal Crossing: New Horizons
Similar to the previous entry, Animal Crossing: New Horizons offers couples a chance to build and explore a virtual world together. This time, however, with the presence and aid of a few cuddly animal friends.
Creativity is the name of the game with this take on the popular fetch-quest series, as it allows possibly the most freedom seen in any of Nintendo’s other crafting-related titles. And with two thinkers together, the possibilities are endless.
6 Portal 2
A true classic never goes out of style, and why wouldn’t a couple staying in want to put their brains to the ultimate videogame test? Work together with each other or play a little rough, there’s only one way out of these robotic puzzles, and that’s with a pair of one-eyed robots and a set of portal guns.
A puzzler juggernaut, Portal 2’s multiplayer mode puts players in a series of environmental physics puzzles that will definitely take a few times to get through.
5 Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
Mario Kart might have a somewhat unsavory reputation of splitting friendships, but the most recent entry into the series is a great deal more flexible than some of its contenders. Which means good news for couples.
Couples can race against each other per the usual standard, but they can also compete in teams, battles, and marathons as their favorite Nintendo characters. Simply put, sometimes it’s better to play as a unit than as a competitor.
4 Super Mario World
While any of the original Super Mario titles would be worthy of a spot on this list, it’s the original SNES launch game that takes the credit. Journeying through the mushroom kingdom is a timeless tradition, and even better with two players.
Co-op play is highly encouraged for proper completion of the title, especially if players are seeking out the secret areas. Sometimes all it takes is one shared extra life.
3 Cuphead
If anything, two players make the game double up on difficulty and projectiles. Fortunately, it does give them the option and ability to save the other in a pinch. Still, might wanna put something a bit strong in those mugs.
2 Diablo III
The couple that slays together stays together. While there are a number of dungeon-crawling titles couples to test their mettle in, there are few who compare to the carnage of Diablo III
Like so many titles on this list, Diablo III is simply more enjoyable with any additional players. Can’t go out to a fancy dinner? Spice up the love life with a little demon blood this Valentine’s Day.
