Final Fantasy IX, for many people, is the best Final Fantasy game. The reasons for this can be as numerous as the sands of the sea. The game’s charm comes out through its characters, visual style, and setting. Another important thing is that it felt a lot more like traditional fantasy, especially after the likes of VII and VIII.

This naturally means that a lot of people grew to love the characters and designs and sought out a way to express their love. Cosplay was many people’s answer to this desire. They did their best to be as accurate to the game as possible and it shows. Here are 10 Final Fantasy IX cosplays that look just like the game.

10 Selhin’s Garnet

An ever-popular choice for those who want to cosplay a Final Fantasy IX character is the main heroine, Garnet. Not only is she part of the main party but she’s the character much of the story is centered around for a good part of the game. She’s a white mage in the game so players will often want to have her in your party and she makes for a very attractive cosplay.

Selhin does a fantastic job of showing off Garnet on her DeviantArt page, with her outfit staying true to the character’s appearance in the first half of the game. She also includes a weapon prop in the form of one of Garnet’s equipable staves. If you want more Garnet cosplays or just other cosplays in general, check out her account.

9 Da-monkey’s Zidane

The main character from Final Fantasy IX is Zidane. He’s an interesting one to cosplay as he’s more of a thief type of character, with a build to match. This means there won’t be many big burly men dressing up as Zidane.

Da-monkey does a fantastic job of showing of Zidane in a rather dynamic pose. One of the fun things about Zidane is his choice of weaponry, it can be quite large. For this cosplay, his double-bladed weapon is highlighted.

8 Firiless’ Eiko

Eiko is a character who is not seen for a good chunk of the game but that doesn’t mean she can’t help the heroes out. She’s the youngest character within the main party and she mostly acts as a child should. However, this doesn’t mean she’s all sunshine and rainbows, she’s a fierce little girl who sets out to get what she wants.

Firiless shows what Eiko can do in battle, as she plays the flute. But this isn’t just music, no, it’s about using powerful white magic or summoning fierce monsters to fight. This cosplay does a wonderful job of showing off her determination while staying true to how she is in the game.

7 Genesis’ Amarant

Amarant is an antagonist turned party member who doesn’t get much love. This doesn’t mean he isn’t an interesting character nor that he isn’t useful, though. Amarant is a monk character that uses fist and claw type weapons to be a fantastic physical damage dealer. He also happens to be a rare occurrence when it comes to cosplay.

This doesn’t mean it can’t be pulled off, though, as the above cosplay can attest to. Hosted by jiocosplay on DeviantArt, Genesis does a great job of showing Amarant’s readiness and air of the unknown. Just as in the game, Amarant’s face cannot be seen, just the giant claw that serves as his weapon of choice.

6 Jemkun’s Quina

Another uncommon character to cosplay from the Final Fantasy IX cast is Quina. This strange blue mage joins the party pretty early in the game, if the player so chooses. It, for the game never specifies a gender, can be a real boon to getting through the story but often enough it just ends up not being in the main party.

This doesn’t mean Quina can’t be a fun character to cosplay as, though. As Jemkun illustrates here, Quina is one of those larger than life characters that are more cartoonish than the others. Jemkun nails the whimsical nature of Quina and has the giant fork to go along with the cosplay. This cosplay can be found hosted by jiocosplay on DeviantArt.

5 Epi-corner’s Vivi

One of the most beloved black mages in Final Fantasy history is the adorable little Vivi. Vivi is a character that deals with a lot of existential problems but still manages to come out ahead of it all. Vivi will efficiently help players through the game, offering a lot of combat prowess and emotional moments. The game wouldn’t be complete with Vivi’s soul searching.

The cosplay highlighted above is by epi-corner on DeviantArt and it shows off Vivi’s distinctive features very well. The broad-brimmed hat, magic staff and the underlying shadowing face that only shows the glowing yellow eyes. It’s clear that Vivi is quite different to everyone around. Hat’s off to this wonderful bit of cosplay.

4 Steiner

This fantastic cosplay is from The Cosplay Sweatshop’s twitter page. Steiner is a character that many might have hated or at least disliked when they played the game as children. This often changes as one grows older and begins to appreciate how much character growth he goes through. Steiner is a character who knows who he is at the beginning. Then has everything come crashing down and break apart his image of himself and his life.

One of the great things about this cosplay is that it manages to show off how seriously he takes himself but also how ridiculous he can look. Steiner has got armor that constantly makes noise and that doesn’t quite cover him down to his feet. But he’s incredibly reliable and helps out when he is needed the most.

3 RoseOfMay’s Beatrix

Beatrix is a character many players will remember with both fondness and frustration. She is an enemy that you must fight several times at different points in the game and each time, she will defeat you. However, she too grows as a character as she sees the corruption happening to her queen. Players only get to control and use her for a small portion of time in the game.

Beatrix also happens to be a very popular character to cosplay, for obvious reasons. She’s depicted as being very attractive and strong-willed. This particular cosplay comes from RoseOfMay’s DeviantArt. This cosplay, along with the many others, shows the love and quality that has been put into this creation.

2 PunVisual’s Freya

Freya Crescent is another character that the Final Fantasy IX fans love. She’s extremely helpful to have along and fulfills the “cool” character archetype that most RPGs have. While her character arc isn’t quite as changing as Steiners, she still goes through a lot of tragedy as she pursues the love of her life.

Freya can also be a tricky character to cosplay as she is not human. That means cosplayers need to decide just how far they are willing to go. PunVisual evidently decided to go the whole way with the rat feet and face. The only thing this cosplay is missing is her spear. PunVisual’s cosplay can be found on their DeviantArt.

1 KujaOnii’s Kuja

The game’s main villain and premier antagonist, Kuja. This guy, and it is a guy, is someone who the main characters don’t even know about until they face the Kingdom of Burmecia’s full tragedy. He does a fantastic job of being the villain and this cosplay does a fantastic job of showing him off.

It’s not entirely uncommon for Kuja to be cosplayed, what is rarer is for an actual guy to cosplay as him. However, KujaOnii did an amazing job of showing off Kuja, outfit and all. The whole photo gives you the sense of foreboding that a good villain should give off. You can find more cosplay from KujaOnii at his DeviantArt page.
