Oddworld: Soulstorm is a very charming platformer with unique mechanics and puzzle elements. It is simple for the most part, but it can be complex and demanding in many sections. The game includes platform challenges, fast-paced escape sections, a bit of combat, and strategic thinking even.
Although this game is a gem, there are many other games that provide the same satisfying, if not amazing, puzzle-platformer experience to those who are fond of the genre. Abe’s adventures are charming and unique in their own way, but chances are players can enjoy other platformers just as much. Perhaps even more so for those who prefer a different kind of setting.
10 Limbo
Limbo is a beautiful 2D puzzle platformer with a dark atmosphere. Players control a little kid trying to find his sister, and they have to go through a black and white scenario in order to find her. The game is loaded with escape sections, puzzle, and platforming sections. This is surely one of those artsy, minimalist game that feel modern.
Launched back in 2010, the game is still available on Steam and several modern consoles. When it came out, Limbo was critically acclaimed and reviews were extremely positive. The game is short, though, but it does not make it any less enjoyable.
9 Inside
Made by the same people behind Limbo, both games share similar characteristics. The aesthetic choices do have the same feeling to it, although Inside is not black and white. The game also has a grim and dark atmosphere, and a very unexpected ending.
Those are not the only things that this game seems to have in common with Limbo, though. It is also a short game that has stealth, platforming, and puzzle challenges that play very similarly. It would be fair to say that Inside is almost a higher budget version of an already good game made by the same developers.
8 Braid
There is a reason why most gamers head about Braid even though they never really took an interest in puzzle platformers. This game was revolutionary. Braid is an indie puzzle platformer with a convoluted plot that is filled with metaphors and symbolism.
The reason this game became so famous was not its plot, though. Although discussing about Braid’s message is fun and its message is extremely interesting, the game is mostly known by its unique Time-Reversal mechanic. The fact that reversing time is core-mechanic that must be used to solve puzzles is mind-blowing. It is also one of the best games with a time related mechanic.
7 Another World
This is an odd platform game with puzzle elements, but it is worth trying. Another World, called Out of This World in North America, is an action-adventure game. Players get to play as Lester, a scientist that found himself on a dangerous alien world as a result of an experiment that did not go as expected.
The game has a very cinematic feel to it. The player must be creative and quick to find solutions and paths to proceed. Lester cannot withstand any damage, so actions in this game demand a lot of thinking.
6 Max: The Curse Of Brotherhood
Puzzle platformers that shine usually have a gimmick or unique mechanic of their own. Max: Curse of Brotherhood has its basis on physics-based mechanics and platforming challenges combined, but it has an interesting twist.
Player shave control over a magic marker that demands a bit of creativity to be used. The magic marker has many different powers, such as creating elevations, drawing vines for players to swing on, and so on. There are 20 levels of unique puzzles solving to entertain all fans of the genre.
5 LittleBigPlanet
One of the best light-hearted platformer games out there, LittleBigPlanet is a puzzle game with a lot of personality in its design. It has tight controllers, a charming setting, charismatic characters, and very entertaining gameplay. There is a lot of fun to be had in this unique world.
This award winning game started a franchise that are still going strong. Sackboy, the main character, has to travel around in order to solve problems around LittleBigPlanet, helping the creator curators, and trying to stop the The Collector.
4 Trine
This one is especially fun to those who are fans of Medieval Fantasy, Dungeons & Dragons, and things alike. Trine 4 is currently considered one of the best games of its genre on Steam. It is a puzzle platformer that gives players control over a Wizard, a Knight, and a Thief. Each character has their unique strengths and weaknesses.
Players have to go through the platform and puzzle challenges switching characters and using their abilities creatively to overcome obstacles that are thrown at them in a beautiful fantasy setting.
3 Vessel
With a Steampunk aesthetic to it, Vessel brings players a physics-based puzzle platform challenge in which they control a mechanic facing many different situations. Mechanics are introduced as the game progresses, adding more and more things to do. Players have to work with different kinds of liquids, activate switches, move objects, and so on.
An interesting aspect about Vessel is the design philosophy behind it. There are many ways to solve a single puzzle. This is one of the most fun elements of this game, since it allows a lot of out-of-the-box thinking and incentivizes creativity.
2 FEZ
One of the most unique puzzle games out there, Fez is a beautifully weird art piece. The game does not care much if players die or not, restoring the main character and putting it right back where it was before falling. However, it will not let players progress until they wrap their heads around how the platforming works in this game.
Fez has a 3D world, but not really. You play everything in 2D, but you can spin the world around. It is a very hard to explain concept, which is why this game is so special. Even for those who do not seem to find the game interesting, getting to play it a bit to see how it works is a must.
1 Oddworld: New ’n’ Tasty
Players who liked Oddworld: Soulstorm have most likely played this game already. However, for those who haven’t, it is time to try other games from the franchise. Oddworld: New ’n’ Tasty is an excellent game to get started with it.
This game is a remake of the original Oddworld adventure. It is a lot like the original game, but made more contemporary and better looking. Oddworld: New ’n’ Tasty is more than a remake, it is an update that has been improved upon the original while being respectful to it.
