In 2013, Naughty Dog’s final outing for the PlayStation 3 set a new benchmark for AAA narrative experiences on the console. The Last of Us surpassed the expectations of critics and fans alike. It was more proof that as an entertainment medium videogames could be just as capable of telling a powerful story as a film or a TV show.
The Last of Us combined that boxed set feel of watching an epic TV show while putting its players right in the center of the action with incredible set pieces and stunning visuals. Now seven years on the sequel has arrived with another emotional and dark tale set in its apocalyptic world. The Last of Us 2 is bigger and darker than its predecessor but like all good things, it must come to an end. So let’s take a look at 10 other titles that gamers should add to their backlog if they enjoyed Naughty Dog’s latest.
10 The Evil Within 2
Released in 2017 for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and the PC, The Evil Within 2 is a survival horror game that not only improves on its 2014 predecessor in every way but takes more than a few cues from The Last of Us in terms of its gameplay mechanics.
The Evil Within 2 is a more pure survival horror experience, however, but it has stunning visuals, atmosphere, and world-building. Furthermore, players now have much more freedom to explore the environments while keeping the tension at an all-time high.
9 Days Gone
Released exclusively for the PlayStation 4 in 2019, Days Gone is an open-world action horror game with a great narrative, stunning graphics, and an incredibly detailed world for players to explore. It’s true that Days Gone isn’t quite a polished narratively as The Last of Us 2 it can be every bit as cinematic.
The combat mechanic, crafting and stealth mechanics can all be compared favorably with The Last US 2. The real star of the game, however, is the rich environment and the ease at which players can explore it using the protagonist’s motorbike.
8 Beyond Two Souls
From a visual perspective The Last of Us’ Ellie more than shares a passing resemblance to Hollywood actress Ellen Page. With Beyond Two Souls, however, players will actually play as a character named Jodie performed in motion capture as Page herself.
Released for the PlayStation 3 and the PlayStation 4 in 2013 and 2015 respectively, Beyond Two Souls is an interactive drama with elements of action. While it doesn’t quite reach narratives highs (and lows) of The Last of Us there’s a strong surrogate father and daughter dynamic that fans will appreciate and great performances from Page and her co-star Willem Dafoe.
7 The Life Is Strange Series
In terms of gameplay mechanics, the Life is Strange series couldn’t be any more different from The Last Us. However, the strong emphasis on natural character development will definitely appeal to fans of Ellie’s adventures.
The developer’s Dontnod took the already complex trials and tribulations of growing up as a teenager and forces its characters to come of age through some very extraordinary circumstances. Whether it was in shoes of Max Caulfield, Chloe Price, or Sean Diaz The Life is Strange series sets a benchmark when it comes to emotional storytelling and character development.
6 Red Dead Redemption 2
Released in 2018 for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, Red Dead Redemption 2 is an open-world action-adventure game set in the American Wild West. With the remnants of civilization getting by The Last of Us 2’s towns which seem to have reverted back to the Old West, players should feel right at home in Red Dead’s harsh and almost lawless landscape.
Furthermore, RDR2’s story is an epic one with memorable characters and a huge campaign bursting at the seams with content. Additionally, RDR2 is one of the most beautiful games of the generation, and like TLoU2 will likely look better than many early next-gen titles.
5 God of War (2018)
The fourth entry in the God of War series was as much of a sequel as it was a reboot for the series. The game moved away from the hack-and-slash Devil May Cry style fighting system and adopted a more strategic fighting system with a semi-open world to explore.
In addition to the improvements to games to mechanics, it’s a cinematic experience that is easily on par with The Last of Us Part 2. The developing relationship between father and son in God of War echoes Joel and Ellie’s relationship from the first game.
4 Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End
Released exclusively for the PlayStation 4 in 2016, Uncharted: A Thief’s End is an action-adventure game developed by the same team behind The Last of Us Part 2. It’s the fourth mainline entry starring the everyman action hero Nathan Drake.
Uncharted 4 may not have the emotional punch of The Last of Us 2 but its story which revolves around the bonds of family is still a cinematic epic that’s not to be missed. The icing on the cake is that it stars Troy Baker the voice actor for Joel in The Last of Us as Drake’s brother.
3 The Tomb Raider Series
Ellie has cemented herself in the annals of gaming history as one of the most iconic action heroines but Lara Croft was surviving and adventuring around the globe in the Tomb Raider series long before The Last of Us hit the shelves.
The newly rebooted trilogy launched in 2013 and starred a younger albeit grittier version of one of gaming’s recognizable 90s icons. The trilogy is much darker and more violent with the first game implementing an almost survival horror atmosphere to its action. It is Lara’s survival that is vital to her development as the Tomb Raider and the action hero fans came to know and love.
2 Resident Evil 2 Remake
Released in 2019, the Resident Evil 2 Remake took the original 1998 PS1 survival horror to the next level while also sticking surprisingly close to the game’s roots. It was released on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and the PC to critical acclaim is highly regarded as one of the best horror games of the generation.
Even though Resident Evil 2 still has its roots firmly planted in B-movie zombie horrors of yesterday, fans of The Last of Us 2 absolutely appreciate the immense world-building and the cleverly interconnect levels. The game’s narrative lacks the emotional weight of Naughty Dog’s latest but for those that want to experience a straight zombie horror experience won’t find much better than the Resident Evil 2 Remake.
1 Telltale’s The Walking Dead
To call The Last of Us Part 2 an emotional roller-coaster is something of an understatement. There are just so many moments in the game that will stay with its players for a long time to come. The only other game that comes close to this level of impact is Telltale’s Walking Dead series.
The complete episodic collection is available on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, the Nintendo Switch, and the PC and graphic adventure games. The gameplay is a big departure from TLoU2 but the game’s apocalyptic narrative will definitely resonate with players. Furthermore, unlike Naughty Dog’s predetermined storyline, The Walking Dead’s storyline is arguably more involved because it evolves depending on the choices that the player makes.
