While most people adore Grass-type Pokemon for their floral and natural designs, many will also agree that they have some of the worst weaknesses in the Pokemon series. Being weak to Fire-, Flying-, Bug-, Poison-, and Ice-type attacks makes most of them quite weak, and as a result, they often need absurd stats or powerful subtypes to stay relevant.

This is hardly the case, though, as many Grass-type Pokemon hold the record for the most weaknesses of any species in Pokemon history. Some of them are still quite powerful despite their several weak points, but it’s also quite easy to take most of them down with a wide variety of attacks.

10 Mow Rotom — Four Weaknesses

It’s hard to stress just how disappointing Mow Rotom is as a form for this Electric-type prankster. Most of the Rotom forms get a huge boost from the Levitate ability to prevent Ground-type moves from causing harm, but Mow Rotom gets none of that extra defense due to its new Grass-type trait helping resist them.

It now receives nearly all of the base Grass-type weaknesses of Poison, Ice, Fire, and Bug. It’s an absolute disappointment of a form, even though its potential power with the signature Leaf Storm ability is still something to fear in a battle.

9 Decidueye — Five Weaknesses

Decidueye is hardly the only Grass and Ghost-type combination, as others include Trevenant, Gourgeist, and even Dhelmise. Despite having a ludicrous five different weaknesses, though, they seem to keep making Pokemon with this combination, and few are strong enough to work through such serious drawbacks.

The new weaknesses this comes with are Ghost and Dark-type moves, which both are extremely common among Pokemon that outspeed these grassy tanks. You’ll absolutely need to maximize their defensive stats if you want any of these options to take on most aggressive foes.

8 Whimsicott — Five Weaknesses

With the new Fairy-type being introduced in Pokemon X & Y, many Pokemon gained a ton of new strengths. One of these is Whimsicott, a Grass/Fairy-type that has earned a strong place in competitive Pokemon circles despite a large variety of weaknesses.

Alongside the usual Grass-type vulnerabilities of Flying-, Fire-, and Ice-type moves, Whimsicott also has the added weakness of Steel-type moves, which can be devastating since they tend to be way more powerful than Whimsicott’s weak little body can handle. In addition, it also is doubly weak to Poison-type moves, giving even more ways to kill it with a single attack.

7 Tangela — Five Weaknesses

As mentioned already, the number of base weaknesses of any Grass-type Pokemon is extremely disappointing and puts them at a huge disadvantage. Most of the original Kanto Pokedex had enough subtypes to help them succeed, but Tangela was one of the few original Pokemon that had every downside attached to it.

This means that it’s weak to Poison-, Ice-, Bug-, Flying-, and Fire-type moves, giving extremely few good matchups since so many Pokemon tend to learn at least one. There are tons of others that share this weakness count with Tangela like Chikorita and Sceptile, but few suffer from them as greatly as this tiny ball of vines tends to do.

6 Breloom — Six Weaknesses

There are only a few Grass/Fighting-types in the Pokemon series, but one of the most sorely missed from Pokemon Sword & Shield is perhaps Breloom. This Hoenn all-star was a great physical fighter with tons of support options, and that movepool helped it remain relevant despite its several weaknesses.

This includes a fairly dramatic double weakness to Flying-type moves, but also an added risk against Psychic-type moves that can easily KO it. Another Pokemon with this type combination, Virizion, is a much better holder of that particular weakness thanks to its marvelous Special Defense stat.

5 Leavanny — Six Weaknesses

Leavanny might seem like a remarkable speedy attacker, but it comes at the cost of a seriously alarming number of weaknesses. Grass and Bug-type Pokemon are fairly close in weaknesses, giving Leavanny multiple quadruple weaknesses in the form of Fire and Flying-type moves.

To make matters worse, it also gains very few new resistances, still having a weakness to Ice-, Bug-, Rock-type moves. Unlike many of the other Grass-type Pokemon on this list, Leavanny’s secondary typing doesn’t even get rid of its Poison-type weakness, which makes it an absolutely fragile creature.

4 Appletun & Flapple — Six Weaknesses

The twin Grass- and Dragon-types Appletun and Flapple absolutely have their strengths, particularly thanks to their powerful and identical Gigantamax Forms. Unfortunately, this comes at the cost of a large number of weaknesses to trade for some unusual resistances.

Ice-type moves will absolutely demolish these fruity monstrosities, alongside the usual suspects of Flying-, Poison-, and Bug-type moves. The unusual vulnerabilities this time around are from the Dragon-type side, as now Dragon- and Fairy-type moves can both take a huge bite out of these innocent lizards.

3 Zarude — Seven Weaknesses

While quite new to the Pokemon world, Zarude isn’t the first Grass- and Dark-type combination. It actually shares this with non-Mythicals like Shiftry and Cacturne, but they feel even more prominent on a ‘mon like Zarude who’s supposed to be an especially powerful Mythical Pokemon.

One of the advantages of Poison- and Grass-type combos is the resistance to Fairy and Fighting-type moves, but Zarude features weaknesses to both these types. Additionally , this combo features the especially rare four times weakness to Bug-type moves, making fast fighters like Scizor unstoppable against it.

2 Celebi — Seven Weaknesses

Celebi is also home to another fairly common type combination of Grass and Psychic. Celebi shares its typing with the brand new Calyrex, alongside other classics like the Exeggutor family.

Despite their seemingly-immense power, these Pokemon have some of the highest numbers of weaknesses of any Pokemon in the game. They do resist Poison-type moves thankfully, but this comes with a trade for gaining Dark- and Ghost-type weaknesses and a Zarude-style Bug-type fear.

1 Abomasnow — Seven Weaknesses

The final weakness-heavy Grass-type, and perhaps one of the most vulnerable Pokemon in the game, is none other than Abomasnow. This Sinnoh classic is wonderful for its ability to create the Hail weather effect on entry, and has a unique physical Attack stat compared to other Grass-type Pokemon, but at its core is an extremely easy tree to chop down.

The weaknesses for this disappointing titan include Fire, Fighting, Poison, Flying, Rock, Bug, and Steel. Fire-type moves, the most common of those seven, also come at a four-time weakness, making Abomasnow one of the easiest Pokemon to annihilate with zero planning.
