Subnautica: Below Zero is a survival game, rich with aquatic, alien life. Though its map doesn’t delve as deep as its predecessor, it’s still an expansive world for players to explore. And it’s littered with a variety of landmarks and secrets to uncover.
However, some of those landmarks and secrets are not so obvious. Sector Zero’s waters do well to hide and obscure many places from view. So, here’s a list of locations players may have missed.
Updated November 4, 2021 by Olivia Titus: Even months after its release, Below Zero is still a fun, frozen survival game. Perhaps some secret areas are easier to find, and some near-impossible. But each one still offers their own rewards and risks. And it’s time to take a more thorough look at these hidden locations.
10 Twisty Bridges Tech Sites
Only one biome from the starting region, the Twisty Bridges holds many valuable locations. The most obvious is Sanctuary Zero, but litered throughout the region are three abandoned Alterra sites, filled with useful technology and resources. And between Sanctuary Zero and dodging hostile Brute Sharks, they might be easy to miss.
9 Arctic Spires Tech Sites
The Arctic Spires are one of several land-based biomes. They’re a unique place, home to the only known terrestrial Leviathan of Subnautica: the Ice Worm. Between finding Architect blueprints and dodging these beasts, it’s quite easy to miss what little Alterra bases are here.
8 Glacial Basin Tech Sites
The Glacial Basin is home to a variety of Snowstalkers and Pengwings alike, alongside major plotpoints. But, these twisting, icy landscapes can become disorienting, and it may be easy to miss these two big Alterra sites:
7 Arctic Kelp Tech Site
The kelp forests of Sector Zero, fortunately, lack overt hostiles. But, they’re just as expansive, and home to many hidden secrets. The mapped supply cache is an extremely valuable area for any player. But a not-so-obvious, yet equally important, cache is yet another abandoned Alterra site:
Just beware of Sea Monkeys. This friendly fauna may steal players’ scanners while trying to gather any blueprints, here.
6 Outpost Zero
This area is not-so-secret in location, per se, but rather in purpose. Players who accessed the earliest versions of the game may recognize the area for something more. And while its location will eventually be revealed, here’s a quicker way to get there:
In the original versions of the story, this outpost acted as the starting region, decked out in its prime. Now, players will find it an abdanonded, frozen relic. It’s certainly a fascinating look into the game’s progress.
5 Omega Lab
The Omega Lab is yet another Alterran base, originally used to study and mutate the Kharaa bacteria, before being destroyed by Marguerit Maida. While it hosts a variety of useful information, it isn’t necessary to visit for the plot, making it easy to miss.
Finding this base comes with four PDAs, each of which reveal more history around Alterra’s time on the planet. Anyone investmented in the story should definitely seek this place out.
4 Glacial Connection
This small area is a sub-biome that’s extremely easy to miss. As its name suggests, it is technically a conenctor route between two bigger biomes, filled with labrynthian tunnels.
With its naturally disorienting design, it’s quite easy for players to accidentally drown in these caverns. But it’s a relatively peaceful biome, otherwise.
3 Marguerit’s Thermal Reactors
Players aren’t the only living humans in Sector Zero. Marguerit Maida has left her mark on this map, from her home base, to her greenhouse, to her abandoned thermal reactors. What exactly ruined them is left uncertain, though the variety of hostile fauna local to the biome may give some clues.
Marguerit has been living on planet 4546B for over a decade — and she’s made sure it’s been a decade of relative luxury.
2 Architect Teleporter
The many teleporters scattered throughout the Crater of the first game all but seemingly vanished in Below Zero. One is located in the Phi Robotics Center, but it cannot be activated there. So where, then, is this primary teleporter? Within the hostile Arctic Spires biome.
Between searching for alien caches and avoiding Ice Worms, it’s easy to miss this location. But activating the Arch makes a quick path between the Spires and Basin.
1 Dev Room
Perhaps the most hidden area of the game, the dev room is quite the reward to find. It’s technically not meant to be accessed normally by players. However, should players make use of the Prawn Suit’s grapple arm upgrade and built-in thrusters, they can find this hidden area with a bit of finagling.
Accessing this area can technically get players some hard-to-gather resources. But mostly, finding this secret is its own reward.
