Scarlet Nexus has one of the most complex plots of any game released in 2021. It can be a lot to take in as players have to get through the game twice to see everything from both Yuito’s and Kasane’s perspectives. In this way, Bandai Namco seemingly structured it like NieR: Automata, which is a great thing.

The downside is the time commitment, but that’s an easy price to pay to get a game with a good story. Besides the main plotlines, there are also some side stories that someone could miss if they skipped interacting with companions or didn’t pay close attention. Please note, there will be spoilers ahead.

10 Luka’s Self-Doubts About Being A Dud

One thing that is revealed late in Scarlet Nexus is that Yuito was a Dud. It is then revealed that so were Karen and Luka. This is why Luka is so stunted in his growth and why he is obsessed with working out.

Luka wants a strong body in case his abilities go away since he was a Dud. He talks about turning everyone in the game into a Dud in a bonding episode, which he says as a joke. There’s probably some truth to those words though.

9 Tsugumi’s Obsession With Plants

Tsugumi’s love of plants can be brought up in the main story. However, why she likes them gets revealed in the bonding episodes. She was given plants because people were afraid of her. This made it hard to make friends.

Plants then became Tsugumi’s friends. While this may sound sad, it is a sweet trait of her personality. This eventually leads her and Yuito on a fun quest to find a rare flower in the game.

8 Kagero And Tsugumi’s Relationship

It is obvious that Kagero and Tsugumi are close in Scarlet Nexus. Why this is the case is hidden between the lines. Kagero comes from the moon and he left his family behind.

That was 2,000 years ago, meaning they are long dead by now. It’s never explicitly said but Tsugumi must remind Kagero of his daughter. As an Easter Egg, Tsugumi probably wears a cape in order to be more like Kagero.

7 Gemma’s Adventures In Trying New Things

Gemma may seem like a lunkhead obsessed with working out. While he does indeed appreciate exercise equipment as gifts, he also has a fun side. Gemma doesn’t want to get left behind by a new generation so he asks Yuito to bring him around to popular attractions like a VR Cat cafe.

By the end, Gemma rediscovers his love of gyoza. This later makes him realize that he wants to try and find more gyoza places as a hobby.

6 Gemma’s And The Conspiracy With Retired Soldiers

A less heartwarming side to Gemma’s side stories involves a conspiracy. When he asks Yuito to help look into the disappearance of his friend Masaki, they uncover a military secret.

Retired soldiers from the OSF are getting experimented on just like the Duds in the game. They are not, in fact, living carefree lives out of the service which is a real Soylent Green situation.

5 Kyoka’s Split Personality

Kyoka’s supernatural ability allows her to duplicate herself in Scarlet Nexus. This is a fitting power thematically as there is a secret to her character. It is revealed in the main story that she is a clone of Dr. Pope.

What isn’t revealed is the fact that Dr. Pope’s personality can sometimes poke through as Kyoka was implanted with her memories. She’s living two lives at once which can be tiring for her.

4 Naomi Was In Love With Yuito

Naomi turning into an Other is one of the most shocking revelations early in the game. Another one is that she liked Yuito. Love is a strong word but it is clear that she at least wanted something to happen between the two of them.

There are small hints in the main story but it all comes to a climax when Kasane reveals Naomi’s feelings about Yuito in a bonding episode. It’s a bit hard to process for Yuito as it is a tragic romance.

3 Arashi’s Experiments

Arashi is one of the best characters in Scarlet Nexus. Her passion for video games and soda can be admired by players everywhere. Arashi’s best moments are when she toys with Yuito through her various experiments on his brain.

It is later revealed that Arashi is doing this because she secretly wants to help out her brother, Fubuki. Experimenting on Yuito to get him to relax is a means to an end.

2 Shiden’s Hobbies

Shiden, contrasted next to Arashi, is a hard character to like in Scarlet Nexus. He is better with Kasane’s campaign but he comes across as too pigheaded in Yuito’s. Eventually, he softens up to reveal his love of photography and art.

Shiden is the opposite of Prompto from Final Fantasy 15 in this way. Not only does he like that stuff but he is fascinated with the weather, especially lightning. This lead to a deep conversation between Yuito and Shiden about the struggles of becoming powerful in a bonding episode.

1 Kagero’s Death Wish

It is no secret that Kagero has done some terrible things in his life. He’s spied and assassinated people like Yuito’s father. He’s had to live with this guilt for so long that he develops a death wish. As a happy-go-lucky character, he plays off these attempts as payments for justice.

This can be seen when he and Yuito fight and when Kaito almost kills Kagero in a bonding episode. If one looks deeper, he probably also wants to die so that he can see his family again in the afterlife.
