Indie darling Cuphead had a long and eventful development before finally reaching players’ hands in 2017. What started as an Xbox and PC exclusive eventually made its way to the Nintendo Switch and PS4, meaning almost every gamer with a piece modern hardware can experience this run and gun masterpiece.

The game’s unique art style and extreme difficulty have cemented its legacy. The internet really took to the title, as the memes below show. Some of these are related to the game, while others use cCuphead’s imagery to tell unrelated jokes. These should hold you over until The Delicious Last Course comes out.

10 The Game Is Completed, But The Scars Never Leave

Cuphead is playable cooperatively, but if you have no other friend who is up to the challenge, you have to take the bosses on by yourself.

Going through this gauntlet alone is a brutal challenge: you cannot share the failure with anyone, and no one laughs with you as you fail for the hundredth time. Even after beating it, one wonders if it was worth all the frustration and heartache.

9 They Might Be Lying

As hard as Cuphead is, there are some people who might be able to breeze through it with little resistance. Even King Dice would be surprised by someone taking out all the bosses with just a few deaths each.

Don’t be the person who acts like it is easy and everyone else is weird for thinking it is hard. Just because it is easy for you does not mean it is an easy title on average.

8 Now That’s Tough

The Devil is not the hardest boss in Cuphead — King Dice is more challenging — but he is still a worthy final battle. Most make the bout a little easier with the Smoke Bomb, which allows you to avoid damage while dashing.

Anybody who beat the final boss without using this deserves respect. The power-up that gives you five health instead of three also helps, though it does make attacks weaker.

7 Soon We Will All Be Characters In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is the gift that keeps on giving. There are even more characters in the game than you realize thanks to the alternate costumes for Miis. Cuphead and Mugman are available in the game due to this.

While we would have preferred them as proper combatants on the roster, it is still a pleasure to bring him into a bout. Soon enough, we’ll all be Super Smash Bros. Characters.

6 The Anger Is Real

Cuphead has no checkpoints, so even the slightest error can result in restarting a level or boss. At least you have three hit points before death.

All the same, losing to the last phase of a boss because of a foolish mistake like failing to parry an easy projectile is one of the most infuriating things to happen in gaming. It is akin to dying at a boss in Dark Souls when the enemy is on its last legs.

5 The Real Boss Battle Is With Your Patience

Do not let Cuphead’s cartoonish aesthetic fool you; it is truly one of the hardest games of its generation. Fortunately, it is never too unfair or nonsensical with its challenge. Still, you will fight the same boss anywhere between 20 and 50 times before besting it.

Just try not to wake your neighbors up as you yell at your television. Try to keep in mind how good it will feel when you finally beat the incredibly challenging bout.

4 King Dice Begs To Differ

You might think Cuphead is easy, but that is probably because you have yet to encounter the second to last boss, King Dice. This guy does not joke around. Before even taking him on, you have to take on a series of mini-bosses.

His fight then requires a mastery of parrying and precision. Once you beat this guy, the last fight with the Devil is a relative cakewalk.

3 The King Of Halloween

Halloween is a kid’s dream. What else is more fun than walking around in a costume and receiving candy from everyone in the neighborhood? A lot of people buy bite-sized candies to give out, but a few houses gift children honest-to-goodness with king-size candy bars.

This is a feeling on par with receiving a Christmas gift you have been anxiously anticipating for months. The only thing better than getting it is eating it.

2 Meme Of A Meme

This meme is a joke about the popular “What are those?” video from several years back. The only difference is: we think King Dice is fairly stylish. The die-shaped head is worse than his choice of footwear.

All the same, we shouldn’t shame him for having a head shaped like a die. Then again, in a world where the protagonist’s head is a literal cup, we don’t think people care about King Dice’s face.

1 Schoolboys In Disgrace

Anyone who has defended themselves against a bully has been in this situation. You finally have enough and fight back, only for both of you or, even worse, just you to get in trouble.

The school does nothing to help when the bully is taunting you, but disciplines you for self-defense. Similarly, they find nothing wrong with piling on homework, destroying free time, and any semblance of a social life.
