With the upcoming release of Super Mario 3D All-Stars for the Nintendo Switch, fans of the Super Mario franchise have been reminiscing about Super Mario 64, Super Mario Galaxy, and of course, Super Mario Sunshine. All three 3D platformers are included in the high-definition collection of titles produced to commemorate the 35th anniversary of the Super Mario franchise.

For Gamecube fans, Super Mario Sunshine was one of the flagship titles of the console. It contained a unique mechanism with the introduction of a water-powered jetpack style device called the Flash Liquidizer Ultra Dousing Device, or F.L.U.D.D. for short. This quirky device allowed Mario to clean up the isle of Delfino while collecting Shine Sprites.

The F.L.U.D.D. was such a bizarre concept that over the years it been the center of many Super Mario Sunshine memes, along with some other aspects of the game that true fans will fondly recall. Here we gather up some of those memes to celebrate all things Super Mario Sunshine.

10 Mario 64 On An Island

Super Mario Sunshine is Super Mario 64 on an island is a concept we aren’t buying. While Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine are the earliest 3D platformers in the franchise there are many differences between them. Both may have a hub, main quests, and sidelines but tell me a platformer that doesn’t have these?

Super Mario Sunshine has F.L.U.D.D. which is a unique idea never seen before or since, as well as a far more beautiful setting. It also has a much better camera system, easier to understand, albeit more difficult quests, and huge graphical improvements. It’s far more than a simple setting change.

9 Hoarding Townspeople

When Mario arrives on Delfino he is immediately blamed for the pollution and chaos. As a shadowed man with his silhouette is trying to destroy the island, Mario needs to save it by cleaning up both the island and his name, gathering Shine Sprites as he goes to restore the island’s beauty.

There’s just one slight issue with the Shine Sprites as this meme shows. Many of the townspeople appear to be hoarding them. So, tell us again why everything is Mario’s fault?

8 How Can You Not See Delfino?

At one point, you’ll find yourself on a tiny island with this poor guy who was shipwrecked three years ago and appears to be existing on coconuts and seawater. You’ll feel quite sorry for him until you turn around.

Delfino is literally in sight. Even if he can’t swim, surely he could attract someone’s attention? There’s also a tunnel, just in case you thought we were being harsh. It’s right down that pipe in the background of the image.

Honestly, we wonder how he’s survived for three years if he can’t manage to get back to the mainland with all these options.

7 Chocolate Mud

As this meme suggests, there has never been a game where the mud looks more like chocolate, or maybe even chocolate milk. Oftentimes just playing will give you a craving for milk chocolate swirled delicately with white.

While your task is to clean up Delfino, eliminating the chocolatey looking goodness, we can’t help but think there are some neighborhood kids around trying to drink it with straws.

6 Water Is Endless

Don’t mistake us for F.L.U.D.D haters, we adore the device, which even has its own personality, but sometimes we do have to suspend our disbelief, as this meme shows us.

Squirting people and our surroundings is fun and feels natural. Even the hovering felt ok once we got used to the idea. It’s just the physics that confuses us. We were with F.L.U.D.D. all the way as we hovered over a river but that large seemingly never-ending hole? How do we maintain our height when the water is shooting into nowhere?

5 What Do You Mean, I’m Out Of Water?

Being able to use F.L.U.D.D. is essential in the game but there’s a catch. While you can hover and squirt you need to be conservative since the tank will need refilling.

Unlike some game mechanics, F.L.U.D.D. requires frequent supplies of water, meaning you can get stuck in strange places, fall out of the sky or struggle to remove the last bit of mud from an area. When this happens this meme comes into play as you inevitably get annoyed that your great run is foiled by a lack of H2O.

4 Quarantine Problems

While you’re cleaning up the island you’ll come across this piranha plant boss. While he quite happily sits on the roof, your weight is too much for the building and you’ll both go crashing through in this cutscene.

We can’t help but feel a little chunky when our weight breaks an entire house that’s sturdy enough to hold up this beast. Combined with paranoia about those quarantine pounds due to lack of exercise and an office by the fridge, we’re definitely pulling this sad meme face.

3 Cleaning Up Is Hard

Super Mario Sunshine is unique but it’s also incredibly difficult in places, especially if you are looking to get all the coins as well as the Shine Sprites. Thanks to the dynamics and restrictions, as well as the randomness of some coin locations, getting 100% completion is a huge challenge.

Unless you’re a platforming expert with a masters in parkour, then this meme will definitely apply to you. No one has ever simply completed this game.

2 Earning A Rest

After all that hard work, we love this meme that shows Mario taking a well-deserved rest. While some may think this is a boring meme, quite frankly we want to relish the achievement of saving Delfino with a water pump.

Mario deserves to relax after this adventure and so do we. Chilling out on a beach like this is something we want to come true and right now would be great.

1 Still Wanting A Sequel

We know that at this point a sequel isn’t happening, believe us. However, we still can’t stop waiting and hoping, just in case. We love this game so much and we wish we had more.

Meanwhile, we’ll make do with the high-resolution upgrade to Super Mario Sunshine that we’ll get as part of the Super Mario All-Stars on the Switch.
