With the announcement of a Mass Effect Legendary Edition to come out 2021, the fandom for the space-faring RPG adventure series has re-awoken. Soon everyone can re-live the fight with Saren, romancing their favorite companion, and their drama-filled war against the Reapers.
Such a re-awakening creates a flow of Mass Effect memes both new and old. After all, the series is not without its humor. The fandom certainly has its own inside jokes as well.
10 Fixing Everything With Shepard
In Mass Effect 2, the Illusive Man spends an unimaginable amount of money and resources to bring Shepard back to life because he believes they are the only one who can fix the many problems the galaxy is facing.
A lot of fans recognize the craziness of putting all this responsibility on just one person, making this meme perfect for the situation.
9 Emotional Roller-Coaster
All of Mass Effect is an emotional roller-coaster. Depending on your choices, any companion can die. This is especially true in the second game if you consider the suicide mission towards the end.
Of all the titles though, the third game may be the most emotional since it the last of the trilogy and contains many sentimental moments and goodbyes.
8 “Let Me Be Gay”
With time, Bioware has slowly opened its gates to more diverse romance options. However, it still has a long way to go for the LGBTQA2S+ community. For them, options are few to none. Most of the romance options are straight.
Characters that are not straight though include Liara, Kaiden (only in the third game), Samara, Kelly Chambers, Steve Cortez, and Diana Allers. Besides Liara and Kaiden, the other characters are not very popular compared to Garrus, Jack, Thane, Tali, and Miranda.
7 Snacks For Movie Night
Memes are not only made by fans of the original trilogy, but Andromeda gets some love too. This particular meme references a special quest the player gets to collect snacks for a movie night with the ship companions.
Bonding with crewmates is a typically much more interesting activity than just fighting general enemies (like the Kett). So this meme hits true to how far fans will go for their companions versus the main plot.
6 Romance Garrus Again
Most Mass Effect players that partake in the online fandom are aware that Garrus is one of if not the most popular character players romance in the trilogy. While he was not romantically available in the first game, he became available in the second game due to popular demand.
So it is not uncommon for big fans to do multiple playthroughs of the game and romance Garrus each time.
5 The Reaper Invasion And Citadel Council
The council of the Citadel in the first Mass Effect game is often the subject of memes and jokes. Despite their power and influence, they are quite useless to the oncoming threat. Despite Shepard’s many warnings, they remain in doubt and do not wish to prepare.
So a lot of fans felt pretty smug when the threat finally arrived and the Citadel council came running back for help.
4 Remastered Mass Effect
This recent meme is less about the games and more about the upcoming remaster. 2020 has been a rough year due to the stress of various elections as well as the worldwide pandemic. So the announcement of the upcoming remaster is some good news!
While Andromeda has been met with a lot of angry fans, the remastered trilogy may breathe some much-needed life into the franchise. The only bummer now is that fans have to wait patiently for the spring of 2021.
3 Geth Versus Quarians
The side-story of the Geth and Quarians is an important one in terms of the themes of organic life versus machines in the series. The Quarians created the Geth, but the Geth got so smart that they decided to fight back against the Quarians for freedom and the Quarians got kicked off of their own home planet.
This meme shows how the tables turned on their home planet, as they were the ones controlling the Geth until the Geth rose up against them.
2 Jaal
A running joke among Mass Effect fans is they typically love to romance aliens and not the humans. After all, why romance a human when that is the common choice everywhere else? It is not every day that a video game gives you the chance to romance a totally different species. Why not take advantage of that?
Jaal is a major example, especially since his race is newly discovered in Andromeda so the player does not even know completely what they are in for. That is all just part of the fun!
1 Saving Nihlus
Saving Nihlus has been a running joke since the first game. In RPGs where players have consequences to their choices, they always wonder if they can possibly save certain characters by doing things differently. That was the case for Nihlus. The truth is that he always dies no matter what you do.
However, that did not stop players from really trying and researching if he could be saved. Despite knowing him for a short amount of him, he seemed like a very cool character.
