One of the first heavy-hitters of Sony’s superb lineup for the eighth-generation of video games was Horizon Zero Dawn, an original game that became much beloved for fans. Its open world and gripping story ensured players kept at the game at an extended stretch.
However, this long play resulted in fans coming up with many points that don’t make sense about the game. Since these aren’t a big deal, fans have taken to creating memes to make light of Horizon Zero Dawn’s occasional lack of sense. That said, here are 10 of the best memes that prove our point about the game’s nature.
10 So Much For Authenticity
It’s hard to explain to an outsider what the game is about, seeing as the setting doesn’t exactly do a good job at conveying what year it is. On the face of it, the characters seem to be Vikings, but there’s a little snag in that there are freakin’ robots present.
It’s understandable where the vegetation came from, yet the presence of these robots does make the game out to be a bit nonsensical, especially when it’s being viewed by someone unfamiliar with the game.
9 Blame It On The Game
While you might think it is the fault of the players to go out guns blazing in their battle technique, it really has to be the fault of the game itself. That’s because we hardly get proper training in setting up traps or strategy.
And yet, the game expects players to be perfectly in tune with the fighting style when we didn’t even get a chance to understand them. For this reason, we get why people choose to spam bows at enemies.
8 No Friction Burn
To be fair, pretty much all platformers are guilty of invoking this trope. This happens to be the one where protagonists use ziplines as if it’s as simple as playing on the swings. As can be seen here, Aloy used the zipline like it was nothing.
In reality, her hands should’ve been melted off before she even reached the bottom, but we’re not supposed to question this lack of logic and can make Aloy repeat this process countless times. If only physics worked like this in real life.
7 Not In This Game
There are quite a few instances in Horizon Zero Dawn where it seems unrealistic how the enemies suddenly conjure up such agility. Even stranger still is how the same robots would be seen grazing as if in slow motion earlier.
However, as soon as they are attacked, these enormous enemies spring up in action and start their rampage. It makes for some interesting gameplay, but it shouldn’t really be possible considering the size of these robots.
6 Here Comes The Glitch
When Horizon Zero Dawn had just come out, fans had complained about the presence of glitches spread throughout the game. It got to the point where players would take screenshots of the glitches and share them with others.
We get that glitches aren’t exactly sensible, but the kind found in this game were more baffling than usual, as can be seen in this meme. Aloy would get into such weird positions that one would wonder what the heck the developers had been thinking during production for a glitch like this to exist.
5 Elaborate Story
The way the plot was paced in Horizon Zero Dawn, you’d think the developers made it out on a whim as they went by. After all, the story started somewhere else entirely and ended up in a whole other place.
This meme perfectly sums up the weird style of storytelling here, as Aloy herself is parodied into looking baffled at the many twists and turns the story took without actually setting these events up. That was the reason why a lot of fans were left scratching their heads after the story ended.
4 Unmerciful Game
In this case, the nonsensical part comes from the game’s habit of making side missions so drawn out that they don’t even feel like side missions anymore. On more than a few occasions, a seemingly ordinary mission would unravel endlessly.
What we don’t get here is why these missions weren’t just placed independently rather than be stacked up? Another thing that doesn’t make sense is the complaining by this particular fan over the variety of missions—having more content should make the game worth the money, right?
3 What’s With The Pose?
Since the PS4 had heavily promoted the feature of sharing screenshots and gameplay between users, Horizon Zero Dawn saw many pictures such as the one above to hype up the game by encouraging players to share with each other.
However, most of the pictures really don’t make sense, considering these robots are out to kill Aloy and posing in front of them by making heart shapes doesn’t exactly scream a smart tactic. If anything, this should be titled as Aloy’s last picture before the bird behind had her for lunch.
2 Nobody Cares About Rost
A nagging fault about this game was the fact that characters who died would rarely be mentioned again later on. One of these was Rost, who died pretty early and whose death was barely treated as something significant.
Considering he was the one who raised Aloy she should have been too distraught at his demise, but she seems to get over it rather quickly. Rost might as well have been a victim of Thanos’ snap as he disappeared from sight.
1 All That Sarcasm
Honestly, one of the worst parts of playing the story was the constant put-downs that Aloy had to suffer. For some reason, every character we interact with has a sardonic style of talking where they take jabs at Aloy’s expense.
What also doesn’t make sense is how Aloy easily takes these insults as if they’re no big deal. Another annoying fact is how talking to these characters generally doesn’t reap any benefits, and all we get is some smack talk that serves no purpose.
