Guild Wars 2 is an MMORPG that’s coming up on 10 years since its release in 2012. Some players have been dedicated fans, sticking with the game for three, five, seven years - or longer! Many duck in and out, picking it up as it tickles their fancy and there’s new and interesting content for them to explore.

Guild Wars 2 players will receive their third expansion this year, End of Dragons, assuming it isn’t subject to COVID-related delays. Both fair weather and loyal fans can get hearty chuckles from these 10 Guild Wars memes. Pro-tip: there’s some content here for Guild Wars 1 players, too.

10 World Bosses And Newbies

Veteran players are familiar with taking on the wizened mentor role with friends who are new to the game. Envision an Obi-wan, Dumbledore, or Gandalf vibe. Of course, they often have only themselves to blame since they were the ones to introduce Guild Wars 2 to their friend. Regardless, someone has to stop the newbie from making the biggest mistakes that new players can make in Guild Wars 2, so veteran fans valiantly take up their swords.

The world bosses are one of the most intimidating parts; no one signed up to simultaneously be screamed at by a dragon made of ice and a general so small he could be a football. Thankfully, after a few runs, most players are comforted by the group efforts that go into these open world events.

9 “I’m Not Like Other MMOs…”

The MMORPG genre is notoriously toxic with games practically encouraging players to compete because there’s not enough loot to go around. Someone must enjoy this style because, after more than 15 years, WoW is still popular with PC gamers.

Guild Wars 2, on the other hand, encourages its gamers to play nice. When you’ve done any percentage of damage on an enemy, you get rewards after it dies. When you join an event, other players can hop in and help out and everyone earns experience based on the amount they participated. One of the reasons Guild Wars 2 has retained its own popularity is because plenty of fans prefer this more inviting community.

8 Canach Is Tired Of Us

This game is undoubtedly full of engaging characters with an array of personalities and backstories - but Canach is certainly a fan favourite. Veteran Guild Wars 2 players love to return to bother Canach every time there’s a new problem to be solved.

It’s hard to hate a straight-shooting, sarcastic gentleman like Canach! Though he’s surely sick of hearing about what’s threatening all of Tyria this time, players never tire of telling him about it.

7 The Heart of the Mists

Guild Wars 2 is an overwhelmingly positive community compared to a lot of other MMORPGs. However, even good apples have a couple of bruises and the PvP community is Guild Wars’ dark spot.

The Heart of the Mists is a lobby full of players waiting to enter a match of PvP. It’s the perfect breeding ground for unnecessary social commentary, passive and careless hate speech, heated debate about class builds and preferences, and complaining about the players who were in your last match.

6 The Mesmer Version 1.0 Vs. That

This meme is for a unique subset of Guild Wars veterans - those who also played the original Guild Wars. There were a lot of changes between the games, but the new Mesmer was a sticking point for some long-term fans.

Of course, the Mesmer is often an important class in Guild Wars meta being practically mandatory for many raids and other group end-game content. Despite this, it can sometimes be hard to take these players seriously as they are often dressed in billowy skirts and high heels.

5 Even When You Try To Help…

PuGs (short for Pickup Groups) are groups of players working together that were randomly put together by some in-game matchmaking system. Often, they contain an array of skill levels which means that experienced players who know the raid, dungeon, or fractal, may have to explain it to the newbies.

Some gamers, though, forget that they were new once, too. They are shocked that any player would dare to join a public session without memorizing the dungeon first. They just want to charge ahead, leaving dead players who can’t keep up behind to be slaughtered. A lot of good intentions go wasted this way.

4 Show Your PC Some Love

Guild Wars 2 is gorgeous, but it’s undeniably hard on fans’ computers. Even small improvements that fans clamor for, like adding the game to Steam, have been delayed. For veteran players, they probably didn’t need any tech that was too high-end when starting out.

However, as players near the end-game content – especially as they start joining world events with dozens or hundreds of players – any graphics card starts to struggle under the weight of rendering so many characters. Not to mention that each expansion and living world quest has brought new, complicated environments to render. Eventually, every PC needs an upgrade.

3 The Detested Pocket Raptors

Warriors are a simple class meant to be appealing to a new player and easy to pick up. They give out a lot of DPS if played correctly and look pretty badass, too. So, one would assume that a lizard small enough to step on wouldn’t be much of an issue.

When pocket raptors joined the Guild Wars 2 enemy list, they became an immediate sensation. Their tendency to travel in packs, their quick movement, and their unreasonable DPS leads to a surprisingly potent enemy. Guild Wars 2 fans love to hate them. Also, why are they everywhere at the worst possible times?

2 Ascended Crafting (Or Lack Thereof)

This one hits every long-time player where it hurts. Ascended crafting materials are an incredibly valuable resource and it’s easy to spend all the gold you’ve accumulated on just one kind of material when you also need three other kinds. Conversely, players can spend all their hours grinding out at the material’s spawn location, only to return with a pitiful stack.

However, the game starts giving the material to players fairly early on (there’s even a better chance of getting high-quality materials from bags if the character is below a certain level). With no understanding of how valuable it is, newbies toss it away once they can’t store any more in their bank - and everyone else sheds a single tear.

1 Fashion Wars 2

In a game where the story’s stakes are always “the fate of the world” and the PvP’s stakes are usually about how willing you are to hear someone complain about how you’ve built your class, fashion wars are more important than ever.

Guild Wars 2 has a 20-year-long streak of gorgeous art and animation, and the fashion is no exception. Unique styles and vibrant colours set Guild Wars 2 apart from other MMORPGs. Veteran players who have been collecting since the game’s early days will understand the struggle.
