There’s a lot of new stuff coming out for Minecraft. Not only did the developers showcase a bunch of cool, upcoming content for the much awaited Caves and Cliffs update that will now officially be the 1.17 version of Minecraft, the Internet was also taken by storm by the mob vote Mojang organized. The purpose of the vote was to determine which of the three mobs would be included in the next update.
It was a close battle, but in the end the Glow Squid defeated the Moobloom and Iceologer in the vote that divided fans. There’s no denying that the Glow Squid is a controversial mob choice due to squids being generally boring (but cute mobs) in the game anyway. However, the good thing is it gave birth to tons of hilarious memes related to the vote and the mob itself.
10 The Chosen One And The Forgotten One
It was pretty easy for fans to dismiss the Moobloom in the vote early on, most likely because it reminded people too much of an already existing mob variant, the Mooshroom cow. However, the exact same argument could be said for the Glow Squid as well, and even for the Iceologer to a degree.
Even so, the Glow Squid won the vote just barely, dashing past the mountain biome-dwelling Iceologer despite being the most passive of the three mobs and not really having any specific utility. Everyone must have been mesmerized by its glow.
9 Battle Of The Mobs
When looking it at the mobs equally, it becomes pretty clear that they’re all quite ridiculous in design. The Glow Squid in particular has a very peculiar design which was already showcased in Minecraft Earth.
In its introduction video, the Glow Squid is said to be extremely distracting as a mob. However, it’s unclear whether this is actually going to be a real feature in the game or not. As of now, it looks like the squid will just be a regular variant of the original squid.
8 Glow, Not Snow!
The Glow Squid quickly became one of the big fan favorites, along with the Iceologer, which is why it’s no wonder why the Minecraft Live 2020 chat was filled with encouraging cheers and messages while the vote itself was happening. It was the battle of the Glow and Snow sides.
It really did put the Moobloom to shame. Unfortunately, the yellow flower cow had nothing on the shimmering and glowing squid and its ability to mesmerize hundreds of Minecraft players at once.
7 Well, It Glows
So, what does the Glow Squid actually do? Initially, there were some misconceptions about what it could concretely do in the game. Its introduction implied the Glow Squid would have some type of special powers that could hypnotize the player, but this isn’t actually going to be the case, at least for now.
This is pretty funny, considering the Iceologer, a variant of an Illager or Pillager, had so much more to it in terms of gameplay, lore and features. It was actually a very robust and convincing design, but still lost to a mob that simply, well, glows.
6 Have Another Squid, For Now
There’s been a lot of talk about whether or not Mojang is really listening to what the fans. Compared to many other big gaming companies, Mojang generally pulls through and is very much in touch with its own community. However, that doesn’t make them immune to criticism.
The cave update has been on the lips of fans for a very long time, and it’s surprising it hasn’t become a reality sooner than this. It’s a bit ironic for that reason alone that players are asked their opinion directly on mobs that have no real impact, rather than on what major features they’d like to see introduced.
5 The Influence Of Influencers
For a while, the second voting round for the mob looked very much like a loss for the Glow Squid. Many fans were rallying behind the Iceologer, which had a tremendous amount of lore and detail behind its design. However, something incredible happened which helped the Glow Squid win.
Dream, one of the most popular Minecraft content creators, spoke in favor of the Glow Squid on his platform. This created a surge of fans from his platform who went on to vote for the Glow Squid. Sorry, Iceologer, that’s just how the Internet works these days!
4 Ultimate Disappointment
Okay, so let’s put the ability to hypnotize and distract aside for a second. Concretely, what can the Glow Squid do? What will it bring to the game? Even if it has no real effect on gameplay, it could still be a cool aesthetic addition to the world, which is always welcomed. Who doesn’t love a Minecraft world that feels immersive?
Sadly, the Glow Squid isn’t going to be quite as glowy as many would have imagined. Not only will it swim just like regular squids, its glowing effects won’t have the dynamic light effects so many players were hoping to see included into the game. Ah, maybe we should have voted for Iceologer instead..?
3 Vote Of The Century
The Internet is going through some intense times right now, between a global pandemic and major elections taking place in the United States. It’s been a rough year for everyone across the planet, which is why these mob votes have been a much-needed break for some people.
Given the amount of discord that was born between Minecraft fans, it was almost comparable to the actual U.S. elections. Friends were pitted against each other, and one’s choice in the mob vote was considered as a defining factor of their character. At the end of the day, it’s just a game, and just a mob. Let’s take a moment to breathe!
2 Internet Priorities
With all this in mind, what’s the actual case made in favor of the Glow Squid? Well, technically, each of the three mobs are designs that have already been seen in some way shape or form. They don’t drastically change the game in any way.
The Moobloom would have just been a yellow Mooshroom. The Iceologer would have been a variant of an Illager, and since 1.14 which changed villages and villagers, there’s plenty of Illagers for players to deal with anyway. Squids, however, have been the same for the longest time, which is why many players probably opted to vote for it.
1 Useless, But That’s Okay
Ultimately, however, the Glow Squid is an extremely anticlimactic mob. Expectations for it were through the roof, which is probably more so the fault of the players than Mojang itself. At the end of the day, the Glow Squid is just like any other squid.
Hopefully, Mojang will add some sort of extra spice to the design to make it more than just an aesthetic detail in the game. For now, however, it’s just a completely useless addition. Mods and modders might change that when it eventually comes out, though, so never lose hope!
