The science-fiction MMO Star Wars: The Old Republic had a bit of rocky start, but over the years has proven to be a successful and compelling game. It broke the mold of traditional MMOs by giving players a solo-story based experience that they could enjoy with friends and some interesting content like Huttball.
While the game did receive a recent expansion last year some fans feel things are slowing down and are looking for alternatives to turn to as they wait for new content or in the event the developers decide to close things down. According to fans, here are some of the best options right now.
10 World Of Warcraft
Considering much of SWTOR was based off of the World Of Warcraft formula it’s no surprise that this fantasy world makes a great alternative that’s still going strong. With interesting classes, a lore filled world, and a familiar franchise to explore, it’s a great option.
That being said, it doesn’t scratch that sci-fi itch fans might be looking for and it’s likely many people have played it to death already. The game has received recent expansions that make it worth taking another look at and Classic is proving to be a blast for many.
9 The Secret World: Legends
If you enjoyed the narrative experience that came with STWOR then you’ll likely enjoy The Secret World: Legends. Set in the real-world, you as the player must the shadowy underground of secret societies and stop various Lovecraftian horrors.
You’re given the option to choose one of three sides that each have their own morally gray view of the world and its untapped potential. The only downside is that the developers have kept the lights on but largely abandoned it. There’s still plenty of content to explore, but it’s likely the story will never be finished.
8 Elder Scrolls Online
Bethesda’s foray into the MMO with Elder Scrolls Online is doing really well and likely to appeal to many SWTOR fans. The classes are more thought out and exploring new areas and packages of content often feel like stepping into a new world each time.
You’re also presented with story-based choices that have an outcome on certain issues like those found in SWTOR. Granted it’s definitely a fantasy world and combat is different, but there’s a lot to enjoy for those who want to feel like their actions matter.
7 Guild Wars 2
With no monthly costs and strong PVE and PVP combat, Guild Wars 2 can serve as a great alternative for those looking for more action and less story. The other bonus is that the game emphasizes cooperation and group play, something not really found in SWTOR.
While the game is still playable there are no currently planned updates or improvements in the near future. There is a dedicated fanbase that continues playing to this day, making it worth a look if you’re wanting a different experience.
6 ArcheAge
While your choices were important to the story of SWTOR many players felt like their actions never had a lasting impact on the world they were exploring. ArchAge is one of the few MMOs out there that delivers that power and control you might be looking for.
Granted its similarities to SWTOR are rough, but after collaborating with other players to build your first castle and influence the world economy you might not be as upset by that.
5 Neverwinter
Another great story-based MMO is Neverwinter. Taking on one of many classes, you carve a name for yourself into the game’s world as you follow along an interesting and compelling story laid out for you by the developers.
The combat has some similarities to Star Wars: The Old Republic, and at times you’ll forget you’re in an MMO. Sure it’s another fantasy title and not sci-fi, but at its heart, you’re swinging swords and slinging spells like any other Jedi knight.
4 FFXIV
Though the original game fell flat upon release, the re-release is doing much better and still has millions of players diving into the world of Eorzea and game developers are keen to keep releasing expansions and updates.
It is a Final Fantasytitle, which may make or break this MMO for you, but according to fans, it’s definitely worth taking a look. There aren’t many classes to choose from, but the dungeons are a lot of fun and you owe it to yourself to explore the Deep Dungeon or Palace of the Dead.
3 The Lord Of The Rings Online
If what you’re wanting is an MMO based on a highly successful media franchise then you can’t do better than The Lord Of The Rings Online. With a number of classes and an interesting story that fits into the lore of the world after the fall of Sauron, it’s an interesting romp through nostalgic territory.
The game continues to receive updates with a Gundabad expansion coming out in 2021 and plenty of players to join forces with. Like SWTOR you’re a side character who makes a name for themselves as they grow within the world.
2 Rift
Rift has an interesting story set in a fantasy world that bears some similarities to WoW. There are five classes and each feels well-made and serves a valuable role, like those found in SWTOR.
The developers did close down the Rift Prime server, but the free-to-play Rift Live is still active and has a decent number of players to interact with.
1 Entropia
If you haven’t been convinced to try any of the fantasy-based MMOs and just want that sci-fi feel then Entropia is probably your best bet as a SWTOR alternative. With multiple worlds to explore and hi-tech items to craft this could be your home away from the world of Star Wars.
It has been a while since it’s received attention from the game developers and things have slowed down since its golden years. But there’s still a lot to do and experience and checking out the different planets is a fun experience.
