Spiders are a major focal point of human fear. Between their many eyes, legs, and unpredictable ways of moving, mankind has placed spiders in evil roles in fiction for a very long time. The cycle of sinister spider characters has continued on in video games, and any gamer can tell you that there are a lot of spider monsters to be found in games.
Gamers have become pretty jaded in killing caves full of giant spiders in games like Skyrim, Dragon Age, and more. But, what spiders still make our skin crawl? Here are the ten creepiest spiders seen in video games. Also, beware, as this list is no place for the arachnophobic!
10 The Spider Queen From Ōkami
The first boss of Ōkami is actually among its most frightening. In true Ōkami fashion, she is more than just a spider. She is based on a yokai called a Jorōgumo, which are basically women-spiders from Japanese myth.
Like a regular spider, though, she has eight legs, a bulbous abdomen, and a big set of fangs. However, she has human hands at the ends of her legs, as well as a head of long black hair.
9 Silitha From Darksiders
Also fittingly known as “the brood mother,” Silitha is a boss battle in Darksiders that is known for having many children. One aspect of spiders that add to human fear is the amount of offspring a single spider can spawn, and this character definitely plays to that specific aspect of arachnophobia.
One aspect that makes her different is that she talks; she mocks the protagonist as they fight. That makes her a little less scary, but she also has some pretty creepy dialogue.
8 The Duke’s Dear Freja From Dark Souls 2
The Dark Souls series is host to quite a few terrifying spiderlike monstrosities, but, for our money, this one is the absolute worst. According to lore, this spider used to be a pet. Well, it definitely outgrew that lifestyle. Like some others on this list, this spider also has children, and they help her during the boss battle.
7 The Spiders From Grounded
Grounded actually has an arachnophobia mode for players who are scared of spiders. This mode turns the spiders into mild blobs, which is a great idea because the spiders are hauntingly realistic.
Its actually a good game to play if you love spiders, as they have different kinds of spiders with different behaviors. To a lover of spiders, this game is a dream. However, they are a menace and pack a ton of damage, so the game might make the player love them a little less.
6 Black Tiger From Resident Evil HD Remaster
Mutated spiders are a major product of some horror games, so, naturally, Resident Evil had to have at least one. Its also in a room covered in icky web. Just delightful.
Black Tiger is a pretty classic giant spider boss and was made all the more disturbing with the remaster of the game. It’s so hairy, and its front legs do that awful thing spiders do to make themselves look bigger and intimidate their prey before striking.
5 Armogohma From The Legend Of Zelda: Twilight Princess
There are plenty of spider enemies in the Zelda franchise, but there is one that rises above the rest in terms of creepiness. Glowing eyes, hairy abdomen, and the way this boss scuttles around the ceiling is everything out of a spider nightmare. Of course, this spider is also enormous.
4 The Silhouette Spider From Limbo
On its own, Limbo is a creepy game, made all the more unnerving by its quite unique style. At the height of its scary traits its the spider silhouette. It plays on the idea that you can never completely see the entire being, thus making it all the more frightening. The most of what the player sees is its horrifying, angular legs.
3 Armor Spider From Demons Souls
Someone asked themselves how to make spiders even more scary, and their answer was to slap some armor on them. Well, it worked. This spider is sharper and far more dangerous than its naked sisters and brothers. Also, those red glowing eyes are haunting.
2 Rom, The Vacuous Spider From Bloodborne
The one word that can probably summon all the emotions a player has upon witnessing this creature is “ew.”
Rom is disgusting, and apparently a spider according to her name. She has way more eyes and legs than a regular spider, which she probably needs because her body is super bulbous.
1 The Metal Queen From Brutal Legend
This spider is covered in metal, which is very cool, but does that get rid of the fact that there is a horrifying spider underneath? Also, baby metal spiders also get involved during the fight, as well, which is just great. Her legs look sharp as daggers as she jumps around the stage. For some, the metal parts help her be less scary. We don’t know how that could be, though.
