The LEGO games are beloved by fans of all ages, translating our favorite franchises into block form to give us hours of fun and enjoyment with a healthy dose of humor added in. With more LEGO games heading our way, such as LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, last showcased in December, we have decided to look at other franchises that deserve to get digitally bricked.
As the LEGO games are aimed at families, the franchises have to be age-appropriate. Additionally, it seems that one of the requirements of creating a LEGO game is ensuring that the chosen franchise has enough material, such as multiple films under its belt, to ensure there is enough content for the game.
10 Ghostbusters
LEGO is no stranger to Ghostbusters. As well as several physical toy sets, the famous ghost hunters appeared in LEGO Dimensions in various packs, including a story pack based on the 2016 film that featured female protagonists. With three films previously released, as well as the animated The Real Ghostbusters series from the ’80s, this franchise undoubtedly has enough content to make a brilliant LEGO game.
Additionally, a LEGO Ghostbusters game could tie-in nicely with the forthcoming film, Ghostbusters: Afterlife, similar to how the LEGO Jurassic World game launched to coincide with the reboot film in 2015.
9 The Mummy
The original Mummy films are a match made in heaven for the LEGO game franchise. An action hero, supernatural enemies, and a fantastical, exotic setting that appeals to all the family. It would be easy to assign the various characters their abilities to use throughout levels, with Evelyn being the studious type, O’Connell as the brawny type, Jonathan’s thievery and of course, Imhotep’s dark magic.
The original trilogy would be perfect for a LEGO game adaptation and if you wanted to include the numerous Scorpion King films and the 2017 reboot of The Mummy starring Tom Cruise, there’s even more material to use. While these films may seem old for LEGO to take any notice, it’s worth remembering that the Indiana Jones franchise was a lot older by the time LEGO gave it the game treatment.
8 Super Mario
With the recent reveal of the LEGO Super Mario sets that will begin to release later this year, it’s only natural that this much-loved franchise earns a spot in this list. Whereas before the recent collaboration, the idea of a LEGO Super Mario game may have seemed like a distant dream, we’ve been given hope that it might become reality one day now that Nintendo and LEGO have partnered up.
The main factor making this unlikely is that Nintendo would only ever allow this game to launch on the Nintendo Switch. The game would find it harder to make a profit as it would only be on one major console, as opposed to all three. However, it’s not unheard of for a LEGO game to be exclusive to one console, though the previous games were handheld specific and much smaller titles, such as LEGO Friends for the 3DS.
7 Back to the Future
Another franchise that made an appearance in LEGO Dimensions was Back to the Future. It didn’t have a story pack, but it did have a level pack and fun pack, so we did get to see Marty and Doc Brown in action. Additionally, Back to the Future also has a range of LEGO sets already, so there’s already a licensed partnership there.
This classic family-friendly series has three films to its name. It would appeal to a new generation of fans, as well as delivering plenty of nostalgia to its older players.
6 The Mandalorian
One of the biggest hits recently has undoubtedly been The Mandalorian on Disney+, with fans not being able to get enough of The Child, or as the internet affectionately dubbed him — “Baby Yoda.” Star Wars has a massive back-catalog of material to utilize but also has several LEGO games to its name already and recently celebrated the 15th anniversary of the first LEGO Star Wars game.
However, The Mandalorian has been such a tremendous success that it seems like a sure bet that it will get the LEGO game treatment at some point. Our only hope is that it gets fleshed out more and gets its own game, most likely after another season or two of the TV series, rather than just being a bit of DLC for the future release of LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga.
5 LEGO Hidden Side
Now, this is a bit of a wildcard entry, as LEGO Hidden Side is already a LEGO game in its own right. LEGO Hidden Side has a multitude of toy sets that work in conjunction with the mobile app, an interactive Augmented Reality game that allows players to catch ghosts from their sets. There’s also a multiplayer mode where you can play as the ghosts you’ve collected.
This franchise has everything it needs to make a great standard LEGO game; the characters and plot are already there and all of the toy sets could be the various levels within the game. Naturally, the hub would be the small town of Newbury, where the franchise is set. A proper LEGO Hidden Side game would also create a new way for fans to enjoy the full LEGO Hidden Side franchise without having to purchase all of the various sets.
4 Disney
Disney has plenty of material, though arguably most of the Disney series/films don’t have enough substance to make a full LEGO game of their own. However, what would be amazing would be a LEGO Disney game that incorporated many of its franchises, using Disneyland as its hub. Think something along the lines of the Disneyland Adventures game, but a LEGO version that wasn’t just based on rides and utilized more of Disney’s many well-loved characters and environments.
LEGO has many Disney toy sets and mini-figures available, so there’s already a partnership there that could be built upon between the two companies. If LEGO Disney happened, it would undoubtedly be a success as it would be combining two massively popular franchises into one glorious, fun-filled game.
3 The Simpsons
Another popular franchise that made its way into LEGO Dimensions add-on packs was The Simpsons. Now that we’ve had a taste of our favorite cartoon family in block form, wouldn’t it be great to have a full LEGO game for them? Springfield could be the game’s main hub with the levels visiting various well-known locations or episode plots from the TV show.
LEGO already has established licensing for The Simpsons, so it seems possible this game could happen if all parties agreed upon it. While fans are crying out for a remake of The Simpsons Hit & Run, perhaps they could find solace or even a new favorite in the form of LEGO The Simpsons.
2 The Hobbit
This is a cheeky choice, as LEGO The Hobbit already exists. The reason it’s been listed is that fans were never given the full package promised to them in that the final film, The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies, was never released as DLC as intended. That left our LEGO adventures in Middle-Earth a little bit anti-climatic.
It would be great if fans were finally given the final piece of the game, but that seems unlikely as last year the LEGO The Hobbit and LEGO The Lord of the Rings games were pulled from digital stores, most likely due to licensing issues.
1 Minecraft
Minecraft has already made its way into LEGO form with various playsets, but what we’d really like to see is a fully-fledged LEGO Minecraft game. Minecraft is a very successful franchise and it is already branching out into different gaming genres with its interactive episodic Minecraft: Story Mode game and the forthcoming dungeon-crawler Minecraft Dungeons that is due to launch later this year.
With the host of Minecraft characters that are already established, lore and environments, could it be that before long Minecraft takes on the LEGO mantle and provides us with a new gaming experience?
