Bravely Default 2 recently released for the Nintendo Switch, delighting RPG fans everywhere. The game is the third release in the franchise, though it offers a brand new storyline with new characters and jobs, so fans do not need to have played either Bravely Default or Bravely Second to enjoy it.
If you’re enjoying Bravely Default 2 and looking for something similar to play, there are plenty of other RPGs on the Nintendo Switch that you will probably like too. Here’s a list of ten other fantastic RPG games that you should check out.
10 Fire Emblem: Three Houses
Fire Emblem: Three Houses released in 2019 to critical acclaim. Like other Fire Emblem games, it features tactical RPG gameplay where the player moves units across a battlefield. While this is a different battle format from the Bravely series, the ability to pick and choose who is in your battalion, effectively choosing the job roles you want, is kind of similar.
Three Houses also has a lot of replay value as there are multiple story routes that you can choose depending on the choices you make during the game.
9 Atelier Ryza 2: Lost Legends & the Secret Fairy
Atelier Ryza 2 Lost Legends & the Secret Fairy recently released for the Nintendo Switch and it is the 22nd title to release in the Atelier series. However, it is the first in the series to feature a returning protagonist.
This game is set three years after the events of Atelier Ryza: Ever Darkness & the Secret Hideout. It features a real-time tactics battle system that allows players to switch between characters quickly. This latest title also introduces a number of new features, such as diving underwater and climbing up plants on walls.
8 Xenoblade Chronicles 2
Xenoblade Chronicles 2 released in 2017 for Nintendo Switch, making it the seventh title in the Xeno series. However, Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is not actually a direct sequel and features a new setting, brand-new characters, and a different storyline too, as the series shifted towards a more story-based format.
The battle format is action-RPG, rather than turn-based, and the party consists of three characters whose classes are dictated by the blades that they have equipped. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 also features an open-world for players to explore.
7 The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel III
The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel III released for the Nintendo Switch in 2020 and is part of the Trails series, which falls under the umbrella of The Legend of Heroes franchise. A sequel titled The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel IV is set to release this year and will be the final game in the Trails of Cold Steel saga.
Trails of Cold Steel III offers familiar RPG gameplay, much like its predecessors, but it featured speedier battles and offered more seamless transitions into battles also than other games in the series.
6 Earthlock
Earthlock originally released in 2017, with the Wii U being the first Nintendo console to receive it, despite being far past the Wii U’s prime of life. The game was later re-released in 2018 for the Nintendo Switch.
The game features a beautiful, clean art style and features many classic RPG traits, such as turn-based battle, different playable characters, and an intriguing fantasy world for players to explore. This is unsurprising as the developers have stated that Earthlock was inspired by early JRPGs released by Square.
5 Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana
Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana originally released in 2016, but didn’t arrive on the Nintendo Switch until 2018. The Ys series is a long-running RPG franchise with a large fandom. The game features multiple characters that players can switch between during battle, each of which has their own unique fighting style.
The storyline switches between the perspectives of its two protagonists, Adol and Dana. However, the series does not feature the traditional turn-based battle of other classic RPGs. For those of you who like this series, Ys Origin is also available for Nintendo Switch.
4 Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age
Dragon Quest XI originally released in 2017 for 3DS and PS4, and then was later re-released as an enhanced version with the “Echoes of an Elusive Age” subtitle in 2019, releasing on multiple consoles including Nintendo Switch.
The Dragon Quest series is a beloved RPG favorite, and Dragon Quest XI in particular is perfect for both long-time fans and newcomers to the series alike. Players can also swap between the HD and classic retro 16-bit visuals if they wish to experience a more nostalgic experience.
3 Collection of Mana
Collection of Mana released on Nintendo Switch in 2019, grouping together ports of the following classic Nintendo titles: Final Fantasy Adventure (known as Mystic Quest in Europe), Secret of Mana, and Trials of Mana.
The Mana series is one of the most popular JRPG series to date. It began as a handheld spin-off to the popular Final Fantasy series, but all of the Final Fantasy elements were dropped from the second title onwards in order to allow the franchise to grow as its own entity.
2 Final Fantasy XII The Zodiac Age
Final Fantasy XII originally released for the PS2 in 2006, but was later remastered and re-released as The Zodiac Age, with the Nintendo Switch version launching in 2019. This upgraded version allows players to customize their party by choosing a combination of two jobs for each character, with there being 12 jobs in total.
The Final Fantasy series is often lauded as the cream of the crop when it comes to JRPGs and so any RPG fans should definitely try at least one main title if they haven’t already. Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy VIII Remastered, and Final Fantasy IX are some of the other titles available for Nintendo Switch.
1 Octopath Traveler
Octopath Traveler released in 2018 with high praise given for its “back to RPG roots” feel, graphics, and beautiful art style. The game follows eight different characters, with eight different stories available to players, giving plenty of replay value.
The game was successful enough to warrant another release, a prequel called Octopath Traveler: Conquerers of the Continent. However, so far this game has only been released in Japan and the rest of us are still waiting for a western release.
