The Playstation Portable was Sony’s attempt to enter the handlheld gaming world. They released the console in 2005 at the tail end of the Playstation 2’s life with graphics that rivaled the home console. The Playstation Portable was in direct competition with Nintendo’s DS, and, while they didn’t come out on top, their first outing in the handheld space went rather well and the system delivered many great exclusives.

As a way to commemorate Sony’s first handheld console, here are the 10 best games to be released on it based on Metacritic scores, and we’re only including one game per franchise for variety’s sake.

10 Jeanne d’Arc (Metascore 87)

Jeanne d’Arc is a tactical role-playing game released in 2007 and developed by Level 5. The game is loosely based on the story of Joan of Arc, the Hundred Years’ War, and the English Occupation of the French in the 15th century.

In Jeanne d’Arc, you play as Jeanne as she and her party move through a somewhat realistic version of 15th century France. The Playstation Portable version of Ridge Racer complies soundtracks, cars, and tracks from previous titles in the series. As with previous games in the series, Ridge Racer focuses mostly on fast races that emphasize drifting. Drifting throughout races will not only get you around corners quickly with added exit speed, but they will also earn other bonuses throughout the race.

8 Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection (Metascore 88)

Based on Tekken 5 for the Playstation 2, Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection takes the same fun, technique heavy gameplay found in other titles in the franchise and brings it on the go. The Playstation Portable version of Tekken 5 adds some extras that the Playstation 2 port did not have. The Arcade Battle mode has been tweaked to allow for even high goals to be achieved among many other additions that the Playstation 2 port lacked.

Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection was an early game in the Playstation Portable’s life and provided a good showcase of the 3D capabilities of the system.

The Metal Gear series saw a few releases on the Playstation Portable with Metal Gear Solid: Acid 1& 2, Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops, and Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker which is the best ranked among them and was later packaged with the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection.

4 Lumines (Metascore 89)

Lumines is an addictive puzzle game that takes the basic matching color gameplay that is found in other puzzlers and adds music. 2 Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars (Metascore 90)

Unlike other Grand Theft Auto games on the Playstation Portable, Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars plays like the original 2 Grand Theft Autos with a top-down perspective opposed to the third person perspective the series is known for today.

Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars was originally released for the Nintendo DS which includes many mini-games revolving around the second touch screen of the DS. The Playstation Portable not having a touch screen means that these mini-games were not ported over, making this the version of choice if you are not one for gimmicky touch controls.

1 God of War: Chains of Olympus (Metascore 91)

God of War: Chains of Olympus is a prequel to the original God of War for the Playstation 2 that takes place during the 10 years Kratos was serving the god of Olympus before they betrayed him.

God of War: Chains of Olympus’ gameplay is very similar to previous games in the series. It is an action-heavy hack and slash that was influenced by Capcom’s Devil May Cry series. The God of War games were a sight to behold on a handheld in the mid-2000s and proved that home console-like graphics could be done on a portable machine.
