The Doom Slayer is the literal embodiment of wrath. He stops at nothing and fears nothing. Considering his history with demons, going all the way back to the original Doom from 1993, it makes sense for him to hate them so much. Because of this, the Slayer makes plenty of questionable decisions during Doom Eternal, the latest installment in the franchise.
As a fast-paced FPS with a heavy focus on gameplay, this game is not about making choices, but rather seeing what happens as you rip and tear through hordes from hell. The Slayer cannot behave like Arthur Morgan, choosing to antagonize or greet NPCs he meets along the way. Nonetheless, there are some pretty dark things that take place in the game.
10 You Kill People (Indirectly)
In the last couple of missions in the game, Dr. Hayden explains how the demons work with the Maykrs, extracting Argent energy from humans. Basically, the demons torture the people that end up in Hell, extracting an Essence from their souls over time.
The Maykrs refine this Essence to make Argent, the best source of energy in existence. The humans in Hell, deprived of their souls, become demons. They are the same ones you fight in the game. Now you know why there are so many of them.
9 Play As A Demon
In both the Campaign and Multiplayer you can play as a demon. More specifically, the campaign makes you control one for a brief time, to teach you how to play before you jump in the Multiplayer.
Who would have thought that you would be able to do this? In the Campaign, the Slayer seems to transfer his consciousness to a Revenant, in order retrieve his Super Shotgun. So you don’t play as a bad demon. However, your objective is to eliminate the Slayer (last hope of humanity) in the Multiplayer.
8 Kidnap Dr. Hayden
It’s rare to see the Slayer interact with other people. During one of the game’s missions, your main objective is to retrieve Dr. Hayden from one of the last human strongholds in existence. However, the humans are not exactly expecting you to do that, though they do not try to stop you.
Hayden is essentially the leader of the resistance against the demon invasion, before the events that unfold in Doom Eternal. He helps fight back against the hellish fiends, until he falls in battle. Thankfully, he is a robot, so the Slayer just yanks him out of , essentially, a USB port. This all happens while a group of scientists are trying to explain something to him, until a Marauder shows up and scares everyone away.
7 Shoot Mars
In another mission, the Slayer’s objective is to reach the ancient city of Hebeth on Mars, in order to find a teleporter that would take him to Sentinel Prime. The city used to be located somewhere on Mars, but following unspecified events that rendered the planet inhabitable, Hebeth sunk all the way to the planet’s core.
The Slayer figures that the best way to reach it is to use the BFG-10000 to shoot a gigantic hole into Mars. Little thought is given to the planet’s wellbeing or interests.
6 Unleash Icon Of Sin
Later in the game the Slayer travels to Urdak, home of the Maykrs. He confronts them right as they attempt to finalize a ritual to control the legendary Icon Of Sin, stabbing the beast’s heart. This prevents the Maykrs from manipulating the Icon Of Sin, who travels to Earth.
In a way, the Slayer contributes to unleashing this terrible foe against humanity. In fact, Dr. Hayden tells him to hurry back to his home planet to stop the Icon Of Sin from destroying it.
5 Eliminate The Khan Maykr
Although the Khan Maykr serves as one of the main antagonists in Doom Eternal, her death at the hands of the Slayer comes with severe consequences. Practically, the Maykrs and the demons made a pact that would allow them to extract Essence from humans, while creating more demons to add to the hordes of hell.
However, once the Khan Maykr dies the pact is instantly nullified, and the demons proceed to invade Urdak, which gives them access to plenty of other worlds to invade. This includes Earth. The Khan Maykr functioned as a sort of filter for the demons, preventing them from consuming too much of a a given planet at any one time.
4 Cause Urdak’s Demise
The Slayer’s actions ultimately result in Urdak’s demise. Though the planet’s population is never humanized in any way, Dr. Hayden tells the Slayer that to save Earth, Urdak would be lost to the terrifying demons. One planet in exchange for another.
The Maykrs did exploit Earth, however, so a little retribution is warranted. Nonetheless, leading their home, and ultimately their race, to ruin is no small price to consider despite their evildoing. Additionally, this is the second planet in the game that is heavily damaged by the Slayer’s actions.
3 Anger The Dark Lord
In the second to last level of the game, the Slayer faces the Khan Maykr in an epic battle that results in her demise. Immediately after her death, a mysterious voice exclaims in rage: “Nooo!”
Looking at the game’s subtitles reveals that the character speaking these lines is the Dark Lord himself, the ruler of hell. Though his identity is a kept under wraps, plenty of Codex entries point to this entity being the supreme leader of the demons, who undoubtedly has something in store for the Slayer in the game’s DLCs.
2 Mess With The Balance Of Power
After the Slayer successfully eliminates all three Hell Priests, the Khan Maykr reveals an important bit of information: “If you had let the culling continue, the human race you fight to protect would have survived.” She goes on to state that in order for the culling to continue she has to resurrect the Icon Of Sin, who would devour Earth and exterminate all life on it.
Theoretically, the Hell Priests functioned as moderators to the demonic invasion, which would have ceased after enough Argent was extracted from the planet. By killing them, the Slayer put at risk the ensured survival of the human race, although he ended up saving more lives with this gamble.
1 Refuse The Khan Maykr’s Offer
Just why is the Doom Slayer so hell-bent on annihilating demons? In a brief conversation with the Khan Maykr’s hologram, she makes him a proposition: if he gave up the fight, she would restore what the demons took from him, so long ago. If you never played the original Doom, then you might not know what she is talking about.
Though the Slayer might have lost his family to the demons, the undoubtable reason why he hates them so much is because they killed his pet bunny, Daisy. Just like John Wick’s dog. His family is enveloped in a mystery, but you can find a portrait of Daisy with the Slayer in the Fortress Of Doom. Additionally, the ending of the original Doom shows the Slayer grow furious upon finding his bunny murdered by the demons. It’s sad to think he had a chance to bring her back to life but chose not to for the sake of humanity.
