One of the reasons cult classic RPG Undertale is so beloved is because of how packed it is with content. Over ten endings, time-based events, characters that remember your actions — it’s easy to discover something new with each playthrough.

That said, there was quite a lot of content that didn’t make it into the final game — some completely dropped and some accessible with a few tweaks. In recent years, extra media put out by the creator and a lot of fan digging has unveiled some of this unused content for all to enjoy.

10 Unused Determination Theme

Everyone who has played Undertale for any meaningful period of time will be familiar with the piece of music titled ‘Determination’. This is the piece that plays whenever one finds themselves with a game over. With this melancholy piece, Toby Fox managed to do what so many games fail at, and that is produce game over music that doesn’t make you want to put your hand through the screen.

Left in the files of the game is a piece titled ‘mus_kingdescription’. This is a slower version of ‘Determination’ remade using a piano and harpsichord patch — the end result is much more regal-sounding than the original. It is because of this, and the ‘king’ in the filename that some theorize it was to be used after losing to Asgore.

9 Test Monster

It wasn’t just music that went unused, as there are a number of monsters (and quite a lot of dialogue) that didn’t make it to the final game too. For example, ‘obj_testmonster’. Testmonster appears as a Froggit enemy, and from its name, we can assume that it was never meant to be in the final game.

What is interesting about Testmonster is the dialogue that is attached to it. There are many lines that didn’t make it to the final game, such as ‘A frog can’t lick its wounds because its tongue is just too stretchy’ and ‘Do robots dream of electric sex?’

8 Royal Guards 3 And 4

Remember the Royal Guards in Hotland? A rabbit and dragon (maybe?) that the player must convince to be honest about their feelings toward each other to win the fight. It’s a really cute section of the game, and unfortunately, there were two more of them that we never got to meet!

Similar to the other pair, victory comes from convincing them to share their feelings — this time, the cat and insect (top) have had a fight and secretly want to be friends again. Toby Fox has commented on the pair stating that, despite the battle he had created for them, there was no apt place to put it in the game.

7 Unused Candy Room

Early in the first area of the game, Ruins, the player may find a room with a bowl of monster candy. The candies are free to take and heal 10HP each, however, if the player is to take more than 3 the whole bowl will fall on the floor. This is a fun little area that really sets the tone of the entire game.

A probable precursor to this is the scrapped rock candy room. Inaccessible but present in the game’s files, the rock candy room is a small room with a bowl full of rock candies. The player can only carry one, as ‘you can’t carry more, it’s just too heavy.’

6 Unused Sans Attack

Ah, Sans. The secret boss that became the face of the game with secret boss music that became so popular wrestlers started using it as theme songs. The fight against Sans is undoubtedly one of the most iconic boss fights of the last decade, perhaps ever. The combination of the incredible soundtrack, the insane difficulty, and the emotions from having to kill all of your friends makes this an unforgettable experience.

At one point, this already difficult fight was even harder. Youtuber Lil’Alien was able to get several unused attacks working in the fight, one of which includes a torrent of quick-moving platforms falling toward the player which they must climb or risk certain death.

5 These Sprites Are Too Good

The Royal Guard once had an extra member! Pictured in the top right stands Doge, which is what looks to be a Beagle with a spear. Using a method similar to the one the player would use to spare Greater Dog (petting and playing!), Doge would be spared by taking it for a walk.

Pictured below is an inquisitive-looking Papyrus. This sprite was to be used during the super-steamy date with him but was ultimately rejected by Toby Fox. What links Doge and thinking Papyrus together is the fact that they were both rejected for looking ’too good.’

4 Madjickal Unused Track

Madjick is a late-game enemy found in the Core, one of the harder parts of the game. There are a couple of ways to spare Madjick, like using the Stick item so you too can look like a wizard.

However, one of the methods to spare it involves sitting still until its orb-based attack becomes an orb-with-heart-based attack. The orbs will no longer damage the player at this point. Originally, a piece of music named ‘mus_star’ was supposed to play after this change, but it was causing problems so was ultimately scrapped. This is a real shame, it’s a wonderful dreamy tune and it was made using the instruments from Star Fox on SNES!

3 Toriel’s Unused End

Now from dreamy to horrific, Toriel has a couple of unused sprites. Most of them are slight facial changes or walking animations, but there is one that lies within the files of the games titled ‘spr_torielboss_suicide’ (pictured right).

It can be drawn from this that at some point there was an ending to the Toriel fight where she took her own life — as if it wasn’t heartbreaking enough. Luckily for Toriel, this was cut and (spoiler) she survives the entirety of the game. Unless…

2 Unused Magic Skill

Undertale has many elements that are common within RPGs, borrowing a lot especially from Earthbound. At one point, the game was even closer to a standard JRPG as it had a ‘spell’ option during battles.

All that remains of this is a couple of unused button graphics, but it would have been interesting to see what Toby Fox had planned. After all, we know magic definitely exists within the Undertale universe, Toriel even uses fire magic to cook!

1 Hidden Voice Lines

The dialogue in Undertale is almost entirely text-based. There are a couple of exceptions of course — Mettaton’s ‘OH YES’ and Flowey’s demonic laughter and ’that’s a wonderful idea’ (incidentally, taken from a McDonald’s commercial). Outside of these, there were actually a few more that were left out of the game.

There exists a file that plays a very Mettaton-sounding ‘guh’ (perhaps to be used when taking damage) and two clips of Flowey saying ’triple’ and ‘jafe’ (the meanings for this are numerous and varied).
