There are lots of moves like this such as Cut and Surf, and without them, players can’t continue their adventure and will be stuck in a confined area of the game. This list will lay out some of the best Pokémon to catch specifically for HM use. From Geodude to Patrat, here are 10 of the best pokemon to catch for HM use only!

10 Tentacool

This giant jellyfish is known throughout the franchise as one of the most annoying creatures as it shows up in almost every game. The reason it is so annoying is because of how common it is in the wild while players are surfing the ocean and how it is constantly interrupting them.

A lot of players didn’t have a Water-type on their team and caught this one because of how easy it is to encounter and catch. It’s worth having one of these on a trainer’s team if they need to surf across large pools of water because even if it is annoying it is still a useful Water creature.

9 Geodude

This rock monster is a crazy looking creature that players can encounter in wild caves throughout the games. Its evolutions are very powerful so it’s worth a catch even if most players don’t want one because of how common and ugly it is.

Geodude can learn a bunch of different HMs such as Strength and Rock Smash so it never hurts to have one of these on a player’s team. Because of how easy it is to encounter and how it’s prevalent in most regions it earns a spot on this list.

8 Zubat

Bats are terrifying in real life but this one can’t do much to trainers. It is encountered in wild caves and most players are sick and tired of seeing it everywhere.

Lots of players did catch this Pokémon despite how common it is so that they could use moves with it outside of battle because it can learn HMs such as fly. It’s only really worth the catch for players that either have friends or need to use HMs because its final evolution can’t be obtained without trading it.

7 Stunky

Skunks are annoying, and in the Pokémon world, it is no different. This smelly creature was introduced in generation 4 and most players did not take a liking to it.

Because most players didn’t like this creature a lot of trainers didn’t catch one, but if a player was looking for an easy catch that could use a bunch of different moves this was a worthwhile choice. There’s no real reason to catch this weak creature unless a player needs to use HMs because Stunky really stinks!

6 Sandshrew

This little sand creature can cut its way through any tree and players have been using it for that since the beginning of the franchise. One other benefit to this creature is it’s extremely cute and its evolution isn’t too bad either but because it’s not one of the most powerful in the Kanto region a lot of players didn’t catch it.

Most players don’t think that this is a creature worth catching unless they need to use Cut, however, this is a loyal Pokémon for any trainer’s team. Hopefully, it will get more recognition in the future, but it probably won’t, especially since it has already gotten a new regional form.

5 Fearow

There are a bunch of strong Flying-types in the series, and this scary bird is worth catching to use Fly because of its large wingspan and agility. Fearow can move quickly through the sky so it’s the perfect candidate for a Flying Pokémon on any trainers team.

Most players realize how worthwhile this Pokémon is to catch however they still go for the more common bird creatures in the Kanto region such as Pidgey. Because of this it ended up only really being used when players needed a team member that could use Fly.

4 Wingull

This creature can learn a bunch of different HMs which is why it is a worthwhile catch, however, most trainers don’t seem to think so. The only reason that a player would catch one of these is if they needed to use one of the many outside battle moves that it can learn.

Wingull is worth the catch for its strength alone, however, most players don’t realize the potential of its dual typing. Maybe it will get a new form in the future, however, until then, players will remember this creature as one that was only caught for HM use.

3 Rattata

Some people like cute rats and some really don’t, however, this rodent is quite annoying because of how common it is. A lot of players got sick of seeing this one in the generation 1 games and so they decided not to catch it in future games.

Players should consider snagging one of these up early on in their journey though because it’s easy to catch and its evolution can learn a bunch of moves. Trainers everywhere caught this Pokémon early in their adventure specifically to use HMs.

2 Patrat

This is another rodent creature and it was introduced in generation 5 as one of the weakest in the region. It’s not worth catching for trainers that desire having strong creatures on their team.

However, because of how easily it can be caught in the Unova region and how quickly it can learn new moves such as Cut it is worth the catch. Players should consider adding one of these to their team.

1 Pidove

This is another generation 5 Pokémon that isn’t especially strong but is somewhat iconic to the region. Pidove along with its evolutions are easy to find within the region and can be caught all throughout a trainer’s Unova adventure.

Most generation 5 players don’t think it’s worth catching because there are more interesting options available for a Flying-type Pokémon, but the fly HM it can learn combined with how easily it can be caught makes it worth catching it early on. Because of this it deserves the highest spot on this list and will be remembered as an HM only Pokémon forever!
