The Pokémon franchise has released almost a thousand different Pokémon designs at this point and fans have come to love and hate dozens of them over the years. Everyone has their favorite type and fans look for certain aspects of a creature’s design that they find aesthetically pleasing.

Every human is guilty of assumptions and in the world of Pokémon, those can be wildly inaccurate, even through Pokémon Sword & Shield. Thanks to the Pokédex we can see how large or small Pokémon are and can place those next to the assumptions we have about their size and find out how wrong we were.

10 Onix

Onix sneaks onto the list because in 2020 we can’t assume that every Pokémon fan has seen the original anime or any of the movies. It’s an interesting case where most people assume Onix is large, but the moment they see it they realize just how massive its body is. The giant rock snake isn’t comprised of rock segments, those are giant boulders that make up its body. It comes in at over 28 feet in length and those boulders collectively weigh well over 450 lbs. Onix could be used as a destruction crew if needed, it seems.

9 Coalossal

Coalossal is the newest Pokémon on this list, making its debut in the recently released Pokémon Sword & Shield. The Rock/Fire-type is the final evolution of the premier cave-dwelling creature of the Galar region. Pokémon of its shape and stature like Golem are often much smaller than you’d expect (4 feet tall), but Coalossal embraces its titanic inspirations. The never-ending furnace stands at a staggering 9'02" and weighs 685 lbs which makes sense considering its body is formed by condensed rock and coal.

8 Dratini

One thing is certain in the Pokémon franchise and that is that base forms of creatures are super cute. They’re designed with the puppy and kitten perspective in mind of making the Pokémon sought after thanks to how cute it is.

Dratini is a Dragon-type Pokémon and arguably one of the cutest dragons you’ll ever see with its large puppy eyes. You’re going to have a tough time cuddling this thing when it comes into your house and showcases that it is almost 6 feet in length. Thankfully it barely weighs a bit over 7 lbs.

7 Araquanid

If you’ve ever been to a pond of any sort then you’ve likely seen what most people refer to as “pond skimmers” or “water skimmers,” which are spiders that glide across the surface of the water. Araquanid is clearly based on these things and embraces the water as it is both a Bug and Water-type. Would you believe the fact that it is almost 6’ tall? Yes, you read that right, and it gets worse. Not only is this water spider the size of a man, it weighs 180 lbs which means it’s more than capable of holding its own in a fight.

6 Serperior

Serperior is the first but certainly not the last snake Pokémon on this list of larger than expected creatures. Plenty of people have a fear of snakes so it’s unfortunate that these things are the ones that are often misjudged when it comes to how big they are. The regal Grass-type starter is well over 10 feet long and weighs close to 140 lbs. Snakes come in all sizes and patterns but most people will tell you they should all be no larger than the little ones you find squirming around in your front yard after a night of rain.

5 Dunsparce

When fans discuss which Pokémon deserve a new evolutionary form, Dunsparce is usually near or at the top of the list. This yellow and blue slug seems to have so much wasted potential and fans just want to see what it could become. A look at this Normal-type creature labeled the “Land Snake Pokémon” would seem to be no larger than a foot or two in length. The idea that it could be a young dragon becomes a lot more plausible when you realize this thing is 5 feet long, which means it can only grow larger from there.

4 Crobat

Humans have a weird perception of bats as the species that are often seen in entertainment are the ones that are no larger than small birds. It turns out a cursory Google search will show you bats can be quite large.

Crobat, the Poison/Flying-type from the Johto region, is a prime example of this in the Pokémon world. This purple terror measures in at 5'11" tall and weighs 165 lbs on average. Imagine trying to protect yourself from a bat that’s almost 6 feet and weighs more than most of your friends?

3 Hariyama

Pokémon does a good job of sprinkling in some new creatures who are based on human professions instead of animals in order to give the roster some diversity. Hariyama is a Fighting-type from the 3rd generation of Pokémon and is meant to be the Pokémon representation of sumo wrestlers and the culture. Those wrestlers are physically imposing in terms of sheer mass to be sure, but Hariyama takes it a step further by not only weighing 550 lbs but also standing at well over 7 feet tall.

2 Arbok

Let’s now talk about the often forgotten about Poison-type snake Pokémon from the Kanto region, Arbok. This purple snake is based on a cobra so many people assume at first glance that it must be the same size as its real-world counterpart. It turns out that Arbok has much more in common with anacondas than it does cobras considering it is over 11 feet in length. Arbok also happens to weigh close to 150 lbs which makes it even more terrifying.

1 Furret

Every generation of Pokémon games tends to follow some patterns. Fans can expect to run into a 3-step evolutionary line of bird Pokémon, as well as a 2-step evolutionary line of some small mammal. In the 2nd generation of games, Pokémon Gold & Silver, it packs the Johto region with a tiny mammal named Sentret that evolves into its final form named Furret at level 15. Furret’s name may suggest it’s the size of a ferret, but a glance at the pokédex will show you that this tan and brown Normal-type is almost 6 feet in length.
