Pokemon as a franchise has done a good job of providing a large roster of imaginative creatures fans across the globe have fallen in love with. Some are super cute and appeal to those who love cute animals, while others are intimidating and are pursued by trainers looking to make a statement.

Most Pokemon are based on real animals in one way or another and likely have many of the same shortcomings. Wild animals tend to stink so it’s time someone ranked the 10 Pokemon that probably smell awful and warn the world of their existence, including Pokemon Sword & Shield.

10 Grimmsnarl

Grimmsnarl is a Pokemon hailing from the Galar region featured in Pokemon Sword & Shield and seems to be based on fantasy tales of trolls. That alone should be a red flag as no one has ever described a troll as smelling good. Grimmsnarl is covered in tons of hair as well which likely gathers scents and traps them inside. It has a face only a dedicated trainer could love, and it’s safe to assume that those who overcome its offputting looks will also have to do the same for the body odors coming off of the Bulk Up Pokemon.

9 Gumshoos

It’s hard to overcome the fact that Gumshoos looks like a spitting image of former President of the United States, Donald Trump. The assumption may be that the correlation here is that Donald Trump likely smells so therefore Gumshoos does as well. Readers are free to make their own conclusions or connections, but Gumshoos makes the list because it is based on weasels. It seems that mammals tend to smell bad in the wild and that’s likely due to things getting caught or attached to the fur that encompasses their body.

8 Slaking

A major culprit in creating unwanted smells is a poor relationship with personal hygiene. Some people are simply gross, but others end up with poor hygienic tendencies simply out of laziness. In the world of Pokemon, it’s hard to come across a Pokemon lazier than Slaking.

This creature is as powerful as legendary Pokemon, but can’t muster the energy to make a difference. It’s hard to imagine this giant sloth taking the time or effort to make sure it doesn’t smell like the bottom of the ocean.

7 Mudbray

Mudbray is the Pokemon equivalent to a mule and therefore is known to have two truths. The first is that it isn’t the smartest creature around and likely rolls around in mud and poop, and the second is that it naturally carries a funky smell. People who have spent time around horses and/or donkeys know that these giant animals carry a certain odor about them. With Mudbray being a child-like Mule, the possibilities of this thing carrying a perpetual stink with it wherever it goes is pretty high.

6 Raticate

There’s a case to be made that a captured Raticate could be pampered and taken care of by a great trainer, and thus has no smell. For the sake of this piece though we’re talking about these creatures as they are found in the wild and rats tend to live near waste and trash. Its smell is more likely a result of the environment in which it exists and is not due to the composition of its own body’s biology. Raticate’s giant teeth almost guarantee that its breath is also something people should avoid at all costs.

5 Garbodor

Garbodor has ascended to the rankings of popular Pokemon memes and has been the subject of criticism leveraged at Pokemon designers and their regressing creativity when it comes to creating new Pokemon. The Trash Heap Pokemon is exactly what its classification designates. It is a sentient living trash bag that stands at over 6 feet tall and weighs well over 230 lbs. and can have an ability called Stench. Garbodor is a Poison-type Pokemon who likely must remain in its pokeball at all times.

4 Weezing

Fans who have followed Pokemon for years have likely come across the neat fact that Koffing and Weezing were originally going to be called LA and NY, a reference to the harsh pollution in those major cities. Weezing is known as the Poison Gas Pokemon, and though poison isn’t known for its terrible smell, there’s no chance that a living creature that exhausts toxic gas doesn’t smell. The skull and crossbones that can be found on its chest are a warning for both its toxicity as well as its smell.

3 Skuntank

The easiest softball on this list in terms of Pokemon who everyone would agree likely stink is Skuntank. The Skunk Pokemon comes in with a Poison and Dark dual-typing and also happens to have an ability called Stench.

What Stench does is that when Skuntank attacks, this ability creates an opportunity where Skuntank’s opponent might flinch. Imagine smelling so bad that you could make your opponent flinch in battle simply due to your smell? Seems like a pretty powerful trait for a Pokemon that’s rarely captured or trained.

2 Muk

As mentioned with Garbodor, waste and disposed materials tend to smell worse and worse as they continue to break down. Muk, who is known as the Sludge Pokemon, is essentially a giant heaping mound of waste material. Depending on how the chemicals react with one another in its body there’s a chance it exudes no smell whatsoever, but those chances are slim to none. Nothing smells quite like 65 lbs. of toxic waste and materials that happen to be sentient and capable of inflicting damage on other living things.

1 Furret

Topping the list of the Pokemon that probably smell the worst is the Long Body Pokemon from the Johto region, Furret. Humans love having pets and that love simply doesn’t stop at cats and dogs. Those who knew a friend or neighbor with a pet ferret understand how bad they can smell under the supervision of poor pet owners. Not only is Furret based on the real world ferret, but it happens to be almost 6 feet in length and weighs over 70 lbs. on average, which only makes its possible stink factor grow exponentially.
