Those waiting for an increased game library look towards 2021, a promising year for the next-generation console. 2021 looks to be the true start of the next gaming generation. Sony has gone so far as to say that several of these upcoming sequels promise to use full advantage of the powerful new power of the system, including a new SSD that makes PlayStation 5 far faster than its predecessor.

10 Horizon: Forbidden West

While the launch lineup for PlayStation 5 is substantial, Sony has teased that the best titles for their next-generation console have yet to come. One such release is the sequel to the wildly popular PlayStation 4 exclusive, Horizon: Zero Dawn. Horizon: Forbidden West is among the most anticipated games of their upcoming lineup. A recent advertisement from Sony has confirmed that this upcoming sequel is scheduled for release in the second half of 2021, making it a likely contender for a holiday release next year.

9 GTA V: Remastered (Again)

Many games are receiving next-gen upgrades in order to retain players and Grand Theft Auto V is no different. Releasing for the third time on a PlayStation console, Grand Theft Auto V: Enhanced Edition will be released for next-generation hardware with all the features afforded in previous versions of the game. Expanded and enhanced, the most profitable game of all time will see new life once again. For those interested in the online component of the game, Grand Theft Auto: Online will be offered for free for several months exclusively on the PlayStation 5 as a standalone product. This version of the game is expected in the second half of 2021.

8 Battlefield 6

After dedicating several years to Star Wars Battlefront II, the team at DICE has shifted focus back to another iconic shooter franchise. Battlefield 6 is slated for a 2021 release. The team at DICE has stated that this iteration of the successful shooter franchise will specifically target next-generation hardware. Using the increased power and scope of the new consoles, the team at DICE aims to innovate within the game in ways previous hardware was unable to handle. Listed for the PC, Xbox Series X, and the PlayStation 5, players will be able to get their hands on this highly-anticipated sequel in a year’s time.

7 Dynasty Warriors 9: Empires

For action-strategy game fans, Koei-Tecmo’s Dynasty Warriors 9: Empires Is a sequel and spinoff worth investigating. Unlike the main franchise’s hack and slash action design, the Empires spinoff lets players make their own soldiers and guide armies in battles throughout China. This entry inhabits a medieval era. Producer Akihiro Suzuki states that the next-generation versions of the game can expect improvements in the fluidity of gameplay, frame rate, and visual quality. The latest entry in the Dynasty Warriors franchise is expected to release in early 2021.

6 Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart

One of the first games to take full advantage of the new SSD technology of the PlayStation 5 is the newest entry in the Ratchet and Clank franchise. Sequel to the 2016 reboot, Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart will feature seamless and instantaneous loading of different biomes, levels, and environments without the need for loading screens thanks to this new SSD technology.

Because of how taxing the Ratchet and Clank will be, the game will be launched exclusively on the PlayStation 5. The original release is also part of the PlayStation Plus Collection, a unique PlayStation 5 user benefit that allows PlayStation Plus members to enjoy this PlayStation hit free of charge.

5 Little Nightmares II

For those interested in puzzles, platforming, and horror, Little Nightmares II aims to please. This sequel to the 2017 indie hit, Little Nightmares, sees players take on the role of Mono. Aided by the previous protagonist, Six, the duo aim to escape a disturbed and dark fantasy world. Releasing as a PlayStation 4 game with a next-gen upgrade, players will be able to partake in the direct sequel to Little Nightmares on either PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 5. Those interested can pick this title up on February 11, 2021.

4 Resident Evil VIII: Village

Resident Evil VIII: Village serves as a direct sequel to Resident Evil VII: Biohazard, the wildly popular and successful horror survival game. Releasing to critical and fan acclaim in 2017, the decision for a direct sequel serves as no surprise.

Aiming to conclude the journey of Ethan Winters, Resident Evil VIII takes place years after the previous installment in a derelict and mysterious village. Ethan embarks with the series veteran, Chris Redfield, to tackle the next terrifying entry in the franchise on the PlayStation 5.

3 Far Cry 6

One of Ubisoft’s most popular franchises, Far Cry, sees its return in 2021. The sixth entry in the first-person shooter series features Hollywood actor Giancarlo Esposito in the role of the main antagonist, Anton Castillo as he is shaping his son, Diego, to follow in his tyrannical footsteps. Castillo rules with unwavering cruelty and players will be tasked with stopping this dictator from corrupting his son and saving the island nation of Yara from further destruction. Far Cry 6 is slated to release in the first half of 2021.

2 Hitman III

Hitman III aims to conclude the current saga of Agent 47 dubbed the World of Assassination Trilogy. Originally starting in 2016 with the episodic series reboot, Hitman, stealth fans were reintroduced to the hairless headhunting professional. Highlighting unique locales such as Dubai, Hitman III promises to send off this version of Agent 47 with passion. Showcasing the ominous tag line “Death Awaits,” IO Interactive aims to awe players one final time with the franchise. Fans of Hitman can get their hands on the latest entry in this stealth series on January 20, 2021.

1 God of War: Ragnorok

God of War 2018 reinvented the PlayStation mascot Kratos, transforming him from his formerly flat and uninventive character. Players still marvel at the creation that is God of War years later, telling the story of a broken father and his naive son as they journey to fulfill a loved one’s final wish. The sequel to the winner of 2018’s Game of the Year award aims to continue this journey, Taking Kratos and his son, Atreus, to face Ragnorok, at the end of days. Sony ended their final PlayStation 5 showcase with this reveal; God of War: Ragnorok is aiming for a 2021 release date, though no specific date is currently known.
