Spider-Man: Miles Morales may be the first time players get to fully realize the titular teen as his own Spider-Man, but his origins date back nearly 10 years in the Marvel Ultimate comic line. Over the past decade, Miles Morales has been able to seamlessly meld comedy with believable characters, helping to define him as a fan-favorite character.
His newfound fame is due in part to comics that keep the Spider-Man tradition of adding humor in serious stories. While the movies and video-games have helped hold true to this staple of the web-shooting superhero, there are some levels of humor only available in the comic books.
11 Miles Morales: Spider-Man #4
With the staff of his school aiming to uncover a big secret behind his recurring absences, the young hero uses the help of his friends to thwart their efforts. Miles uses his invisibility and web-shooters to cause havoc on campus with some friends who are oblivious to his identity as Spider-Man. Miles is able to enjoy a day out with friends, all while making the vice-principal look like a fool in the process. With an appearance by a joke of a villain in the Frost Pharoah, the jokes are as consistent as the art quality in this issue.
10 Miles Morales: Spider-Man #2
When the Rhino runs into Miles, he tells him that he’s on a mission to find his ex-wife’s niece. Miles decides to assist the now friendly giant on his crusade to rescue a child. Fans won’t want to miss the goofy interactions between Miles and the Rhino in this issue. The large age gap between the pair leads to several arguments throughout the comic, with Miles often being the butt of the joke. The big brute often pokes fun at the young web-slinger for being far younger, much to Miles’s dismay.
9 Miles Morales: The Ultimate Spider-Man #8
In this issue of Miles Morales’s story, he spends time with his father. Jefferson Davis finally gives Miles some information about his past. Jefferson and his brother, Aaron, were criminals involved in New York’s underbelly.
While Jefferson turned his life around and made something of himself, his brother embraced the life they lead, eventually going on to be the Prowler. While the story itself is quite serious, the reaction Miles has is quite humorous, especially considering he has an even bigger secret he’s keeping from his father.
8 Miles Morales: The Ultimate Spider-Man #4
Miles officially begins his career as Spider-Man by taking on one of Peter’s greatest foes, the Green Goblin. While this issue starts off a bit hopeless for the young hero, Miles decided to fight Norman Osborn, making jokes throughout the confrontation, and displaying skillful, albeit clumsy use of his spider powers. Eventually, Peter Parker shows up to help, and the two make the fight into a competition to see who can land the more impressive hit. Miles’s Venom Blast makes an excellent impression on both Peter and Norman in this issue.
7 Miles Morales: The Ultimate Spider-Man #5
After the Spider-Men confront and subdue the Green Goblin, they become the victims of an attempted arrest. The police ask the two to remove their masks and submit themselves to incarceration. With this not being an option for masked vigilantes, chaos ensues. The inexperienced Miles and the seasoned crime fighter Peter debate how to escape while making jokes as only the web-slingers can. While Miles does get grazed by a bullet, he handles the situation in a way that is so absurd it causes readers to chuckle.
6 Miles Morales: The Ultimate Spider-Man #10
After earning the respect and acceptance of Peter Parker, the original masked vigilante leaves New York. Miles once again becomes the one and only Spider-Man in town. With some off from school, Miles heads into town to think about what he can do to live up to his super-hero name.
This issue serves as a comic book version of a side-quest, where Miles fights Electro and Sabretooth. Cloak and Dagger even show up to help, making for a very confused young webhead. Mix in a few silly scenes with Miles’s roommate Ganke and readers will be gripping their sides.
5 Generations: Miles Morales Spider-Man and Peter Parker Spider-Man
In this time-traveling issue of the Spider-Man series, Miles is transported to the time period that birthed the first Spider-Man comics. Sporting a timeline accurate outfit and art style, readers see Miles as he’s never been drawn before. It’s quite fun to see a nostalgic style that pays tribute to the original comics while blending some of the new elements that have defined Miles as Spider-Man. After Miles runs into Peter Parker, the two bond over their spider-abilities and circumstances. As heartfelt as it is silly, readers may have trouble deciding whether to laugh or cry.
4 Miles Morales: Spider-Man #1
For those looking for a good place to hop into a humorous adventure with Miles Morales, this is an excellent starting point. 2019’s relaunch of the Miles Morales comic line uses its first issue to catch new readers up to speed on the web-slinger while chronicling an average day for the teenager. Making web cradles and rescuing New York residents from burning buildings are just a few highlights that will make readers smile. Miles chronicles the day down in his journal, serving as a monologue that readers can use to find some insight into how he feels while saving the day.
3 Miles Morales: Spider-Man #5
After a delightfully dorky bonding session with his best friend, Ganke, gunshots are heard in the streets of New York City. Miles swaps over to his Spider-Man gear to see what appears to be a brewing gang war on a busy intersection. Miles keeps an inner monologue going to narrate the wild events, all while mocking the gang members with some of his best one-liners. The sheer irritation he expresses during the confrontation is enough to make almost anyone crack a smile and his nervousness on a date with his almost-girlfriend is a sheer joy to witness later on.
2 Spider-Man (2016) # 17
With one of the younger X-Men coming to town, Miles’s best friend Ganke is a bit star-struck. Ganke lets the ball-launching hero know about Miles’s super-hero secret, in an effort to get the C-Tier celebrity to spend time with them. The outlandish and outrageous X-Man serves as someone Miles can relate to as he hasn’t been able to other his age. While Ganke’s intentions are good, it does create an awkward tension. In this issue, Miles teams up with Goldballs and a few other amazing friends for laughs and action combined.
1 Spider-Man/Spider-Gwen: Sitting In A Tree
