Boodunnit is a free-to-play sandbox-adventure indie game that is available on Steam. Released in early 2021, this indie game was created by Studio Koprol. The studio is made up of a small team of university students from the Netherlands.
In the game, people get to play as a small and sweet ghost called Boolia (real name Julia). Someone has murdered the town florist and players need to find clues to figure out who or what did it. Players need to master the many little quirks that of the game in order to find out the truth.
10 Boolia’s Favorite Treat
The game has a lot of character details but it can still be a welcome surprise when players get to find out small facts about the protagonist. Boolia, formerly known as Julia Lawson, owned the Boonkle Town Flower Shop and it seems that she liked more than sweet flowers.
In a piece of information given in one of the loading screens of the game, it is said that Julia’s favorite treats are muffins. Not only is this a brilliant side-fact about the character but it also acts as a hint about a potential clue hidden in the game. It is an important reminder that players need to pay close attention to everything in Boodunnit.
9 Mischief Maker
If the weight of solving Boolia’s murder becomes too much for gamers, they can take a break from being a detective. They can become a mischief-maker instead. One of Boolia’s newfound powers as a beginner ghost is that she can levitate objects in the human world.
Boolia can levitate almost anything from flowerpots outside homes or the loaves of bread outside the Bakery. The townsfolk cannot see Boolia except for her sister Emmie. This means that when the player levitates anything near one of the residents they will be terrified. Some of them even pass out on the floor!
8 Why Boolia Cannot Fly
Boolia, also known as Julia, cannot fly. Most ghosts are known for being able to fly and float through the air like ethereal after-life jellyfish but Boolia doesn’t seem to be able to do this. The reason why she cannot fly can be found right at the beginning of the game when players are in the cemetery and first meet Sir Boonkle’s ghost.
Sir Boonkle (also the former founder of the Boonkle town) is an older ghost and explains that Boolia cannot fly because she does not yet have enough experience. This opens the possibility that she may be able to fly once she has settled properly into her afterlife after solving the mystery of her murder.
7 The Posters Around Town
Another entertaining detail that the developers have snuck into the game are the posters that decorate some of the walls in Boonkle. As players float about town as Boolia whilst they look for clues, it can be very amusing for them to read the posters. They can be found on the sides of buildings and are more prevalent on the far side of the town in the alleyway near the Bakery.
It could be easy for some gamers to believe the pigeon may be the culprit after the posters paint it as a hardened and wanted criminal. In a game that has many little quirks, it is crucial to pay attention.
6 Boogie Boolia
This game may seem to have a serious premise, having to help a ghost solve their own murder. However, this did not stop the developers from creating many humorous little quirks in the game for gamers to stumble upon. One of the sweetest ones that some players have found is that Boolia can dance.
When players enter the town from the Cemetary, there will be a road on their left. At the very start of this road, there will be a shop called “Party R Us” with balloons outside of it and a radio sitting on a table. If players float Boolia near the radio, she will start dancing on her own. The game does have amusing quirks but there are other sandbox games that are extremely funny.
5 Stacking Up
For players that find themselves getting stuck on the game when they cannot find any clues, it is important to remember that they need to think outside the box. In some cases, they will have to use the box. Boolia can levitate objects and control them so she can move them around to where she needs them to be.
The stacking of boxes act sort of like puzzles in the game. For gamers who prefer more intense puzzles, a new 2D Platformer with 3D puzzles is due for release later in 2021. They need to master the levitation controls as it can be tricky to get the items to stack correctly otherwise Boolia will not be able to jump up to them. Additionally, moving the boxes around can reveal hidden secrets that may go unseen.
4 Explore Everything
The beauty of this game is that there are no levels to it. It is solely based in two areas, the Cemetary and Boonkle. This means that the player will need to figure out the mystery of Boolias murder from these two areas alone. It’s important to remember to search everywhere in the game as many of the clues are obscure and not what players would expect.
There are five clues overall that players need to find and in a map that is restricted to two areas, it is easy to deduce that they will be hidden in odd places. Some of the clues require a lot of problem-solving to be able to reach them, while others involve making a mess of the town. However, gamers should look everywhere for clues and this includes where Sir Boonkle meets Boolia.
3 Animal Antics
One stereotypical ghost power that Boolia can do as a beginner ghost is possessing people and animals. One of the first things players learn to do in the game is how to possess a mouse to get to a hard-to-reach area. This lesson is a valuable one to remember throughout the game as animals are the way forward.
Possessing people in Boonkle allows the player to interrogate the residents about Boolia’s murder. This can help players to learn more about the circumstances of the murder and about the townsfolk themselves. Part of the fun of Boodunnit is the ability for fans to develop their own theories about who the murderer may be before finishing it.
2 Vincent The Vigilante
Vincent The Vigilante Vent Repairman is a character Boolia meets in the town of Boonkle. He will be hiding in a vent on the far side of town and will not talk to any police officers. Instead, to interact with him players must possess another resident and talk to him. Vincent repairs the vents around town to improve the air quality but many people do not like someone doing unapproved maintenance work to their homes. This is why he is hiding.
His focus on the vents is a well-hidden hint for gamers in the sense that his repairs did something to the vents. In essence, they are quite powerful in blowing air out. Players can use these vents to reach high-up areas. They can do this by possessing a pigeon and using the special ability button whilst standing on a vent to be thrust into the air. Piegon gliding is the only way players can reach some important areas.
1 Head For Heights
The map may not be spread out far but it does go up high. Very few of the essential five murder clues are on the ground, the rest are hidden at different heights throughout town. Players need to solve the puzzles of how to reach these areas and then search them to find the clues.
One of the highest points to reach requires a combination of mouse possession, pigeon possession, and gliding. Then levitating and stacking. Then climbing up them then phasing through a wire fence. It is hard work being a ghost.
