Godfall is a beautiful game, one of the first to fully realize the power of the next-generation hardware of the PlayStation 5. While the game has revealed many key images of the gorgeous setting and visuals behind this new independent property the story has remained a mystery.

While the gameplay is undeniably unique and intriguing, the story leaves many puzzled and asking questions as the game goes on. The lack of reasonable explanation on conflicts throughout the story and strange mechanics give players pause. There are several instances within the game that just don’t add up.

10 Valorplates Changing Body Type

In the hub world, players are able to select one of several different armor types, called Valorplates, each containing a unique ability. Some of these armor sets spawn magic and others boost attack power, giving players a reason to experiment with which set best suits their playstyle. What is not explained is how these plates sometimes transform Orin as a character, even switching his gender for cutscenes and story beats. Characters like Seventh Sanctum remain unphased by this change, but it does cause a rift within the immersion of the player.

9 Macros Fragmenting His Guard

At the beginning of the game, Seventh Sanctum talks about how untouchable the antagonist of the game, Macros, is with his royal guard protecting him. They’re described as elite warriors, the best of the best in his forces. She immediately follows this statement with the fact that they are all away from him for no discernable reason. Why would the aspiring god Macros send away the one group that could protect him from any unforeseen event? It is a given that Macros isn’t aware of Orin’s survival, but when he’s so close to realizing his goal, taking the chance seems foolish.

8 Orin Being A Master Of All Weapon Types

The developers behind this next-generation experience praise the gamepad for its ability to simulate the power of each weapon type in Godfall. While it is fun to feel the different weapon types take advantage of the new DualSense controller on PlayStation 5, it is never canonically explained when and how Orin came to master the unique weapon styles of such different weaponry.

The player does spawn with a long sword, but throughout the game, spears, war hammers, dual blades, and greatswords are placed at Orin’s disposal. The warrior protagonist displays no issue with swapping weapon types on the fly, using each with the ease of a master.

7 Unopened Chests Filled With Weapons And Gear In Enemy Bases

Obtaining Gear in the looter-slasher Godfall is an excellent feeling. Thanks to a microtransaction free system, all gear is obtained via gameplay, and many gear items can be found in overworld chests. When a glowing chest appears on the screen, some can’t help but charge over to it, perusing its contents. Considering the fact that most of the game’s missions take place in enemy strongholds, why are chests filled with valuable weapons and armor, often better than what Orin uses, left unguarded? Strategically, it is inexplicable, serving only to provide a rewarding way for players to obtain loot.

6 What Exactly Is The Seventh Sanctum

One of the most peculiar parts of Godfall is the existence of the Seventh Sanctum. This floating face serves as an instructor and guide for Orin, often explaining the world’s current state after Orin’s coma directly after the game’s opening. What isn’t explained is how she came to inhabit the sanctum. How someone who is incapable of leaving without having Orin to tether herself to knows the exact state of the world is left as a mystery. As far as players know, this disembodied being is omniscient.

5 Why Can Orin Teleport

When heading into the overworld, players are afforded several unique traversal moves to aid them in battle. During confrontations, Orin can jump, slide, and roll around enemies to outmaneuver them.

These abilities fall in line with what would be expected of a master warrior on the battlefield. What comes as a surprise, is Orin’s ability to teleport between specific crystals scattered around the overworld. What allows him to do this is left unexplained, and why he must use these crystals is chalked up to movement convenience.

4 How Does Seventh Sanctum Follow Orin

The Godfall Experience is intertwined with the Seventh Sanctum, this ethereal being serves as a guide and confidant to Orin and the player throughout their journey to confront Macros. She does so by attaching her spirit to Orin as he travels throughout the realms on his quest. While she informs the player that she is always with Orin, the reason for this is hazy at best. How is she able to connect her soul to the warrior, seeing what he does while her body remains in the hub?  This question, unfortunately, remains unanswered as the story for Godfall leaves much to be desired.

3 Enemies Stand In Open Areas Waiting For Orin

Transporting from the sanctum takes each player to a location in the overworld. Heading into each overworld setting, players will find large open areas often crawling with enemies. Though the levels are teeming with corridors and tunnels, monsters choose to congregate in these cylindrical paths, ignoring large areas of the map. This stays consistent regardless of what realm the player travels to. It can be quite comical to walk around a corner to see enemies patrolling the same tiny bubbles, but it often breaks immersion.

2 Each Guardian Waits For Orin Alone

Macros sending away his royal guard, for whatever reason, is explained away during an earlier conversation with Seventh Sanctum. One glaring plot hole that soon follows this information would be each guard choosing a location to wait alone. As earlier specified, these guardians are the strongest of the Macros force, and together there is no chance that Orin could defeat them. Even with Macros sending them away from him while he attempts to ascend to godhood, there is no reason for the royal guard to fragment themselves further, opening up a chance for attack.

1 Players Don’t Play The War Between Orin and Macros’ Armies

Godfall opens with a phenomenal cutscene. A massive battle ensues between the forces of Orin and Macros. The two brothers now turned against each other in combat. Each side collects former brothers in arms turned against each other. It serves as the perfect setpiece to start the experience that Godfall promises to be as genre-defining as the trailers and promotional material promised it would be. Instead of giving players a story that culminates in this epic battle, it is designated as an exposition dump in preparation for a game that never hits the same scale. It ultimately serves to make the entire experience seem lesser in scale.
