Mass Effect 2 is one of the most played and most acclaimed sci-fi games of all time. It is a clear improvement on the first game. Although the story might not be as mysterious and complex as the first one, it has twice as much content, surprisingly fleshed-out characters, and an overhauled combat system that only improves upon the one that we had in the previous game.

Since this game has many side quests and a great number of different outcomes, it is quite easy to miss something important throughout the first playthrough. In fact, there are secrets in Mass Effect 2 that some players only found out about after a few years.

10 Most Of The Game Is Loyalty Missions

Mass Effect 2 does not have an incredibly long plot. Shepard dies and upon being resurrected by the Illusive Man, he starts working for Cerberus in a nearly desperate attempt to save the world. In order to do that, Shepard spends most of the game just recruiting members to his crew and earning their trust.

It is undeniable that the game is fun and well written. It has an even greater gameplay than its predecessor, and the crew recruiting is fun and well written. However, it is also undeniable that in terms of plot, and mystery, the first game had a lot more going on than just recruiting people to go on a really hard mission.

9 It Is Possible To See Legion Before It Is First Revealed

In the mission that you get to meet Legion, the unique mobile Geth platform that saves Shepard from husks that attacked the specter from behind. But that does not need to be the first time you see the character in the game.

Reaper will be sniping the husks throughout the mission. If you move through it quickly enough, it is actually possible to see the sniper Geth unit walking on a platform before it saves Shepard. It will be just calmly walking its way towards a better spot to snipe more husks.

8 Joker’s Dialogues

Not many people know this, but if you stick around Joker for long enough, he will have many lines of dialogue to entertain the player. Joker will complain about how Shepard seems to be supervising him up close. He will also apologize for accidentally letting you hear the audio of the adult content he was consuming. It is all very fitting to the personality of someone who became a pilot after an act of insubordination.

Joker constantly talks to EDI about many subjects, but he also asks Shepard how long he is going to stay there in the most unusual ways. For instance, if you stick around long enough, he might say “I gotta hit the head, commander. We done for now, or do I have to use the bottle I keep under here?”

7 Legion Dances

Legion, the unique mobile Geth platform is a fan favorite badass sniper. His dialogues are interesting, sometimes even deeply philosophical, and he is incredibly charismatic for a monotone conglomerate of Geth Artificial Intelligences that share a single synthetic body.

The game never really shows any signs of Legion taking pleasure in moving its mobile physical synthetic unit in any way, even if rhythmically. Still, if you stay around Legion for long enough, it is possible to see it doing the robot dance. This out-of-character moment is most likely just a joke added by the developers.

6 Beer Goggles

The attention to detail is amazing in all Mass Effect games, and the fun that the developers had with this game is very noticeable. In Mass Effect 2, Bioware had more money to make the game, and therefore put more things in it just for the sake of entertainment.

When at a bar in Illium, players meet an Asari bartender who asks Shepard what he wants. If players make Shepard go for the Mystery Drink at the bar and talk to the Asari again, she will be wearing some make-up and will look younger.

5 BioWare Predicted Complaints About Mass Effect 2

Mass Effect 2 is much more action-oriented than the previous game. The inventory and skill system was greatly simplified, the game included headshots and faster movement, and the overall gameplay was made much faster.

It seems that they always knew that this would be considered a bad thing by hardcore RPG gamers and added a joke about it. In the Citadel, a Salarian Games Seller says “I miss that old games where you had to remember to drink water and it took 5 hours real-time to fly somewhere.”

4 Donovan Hock’s Ogre Statue

Bioware made Mass Effect, but the studio is also the one that delivered us the amazing Dragon Age series. They often reference Dragon Age in Mass Effect. For instance, if you have Dragon Age installed, Shepard gets a new armor with the Dragon Age logo on it.

However, when in Kasumi Goto’s Loyalty Mission, players get to see Donovan Hock’s personal collection. In there, we find the Statue of Liberty’s head and also a statue of Dragon Age’s Ogre. When you interact with the ogre, Kasumi says “Wow. Imagine that thing coming at you in a dark alley.”

3 Cerberus Is Bad, But It Exists For A Reason

During a mission in Mass Effect, Mordin stops to examine a dead human. It finds several tumors and hormonal anomalies. After explaining what he sees, it is made clear that the human was experimented on. Mordin suspects that Krogans experimented on humans due to their genetic diversity when compared to other species.

Mordin says that this is done by brute-force researchers, not thinkers. He strongly repudiates such actions and says this is a line he never crossed. This is one of the many reasons why some think Mordin is the best companion. However, the fact that other races on the galaxy experiment on humans makes Shepard consider there might be a reason for Cerberus’s existence.

2 There Is A Secret Ending To Zaeed’s Mission

Zaeed’s loyalty mission can be done after the suicide mission. In order to get the secret mission, players must recruit Zaeed and make the mercenary survive the suicide mission. Once that is done, go for the loyalty mission. Right at the end, when he gets stuck and about to burn, players are usually given three dialogue choices.

If Zaeed’s loyalty mission is done after the suicide mission, a fourth dialogue option appears. That option allows you to leave the mercenary behind, letting him burn to death.

1 Your Squad Mates Usually Say The Same Thing

No matter who you bring to the missions unless directly tied to them, squad members will say pretty much the same thing about everything that happens. The main difference is how they phrase it. However, Grunt and Legion frequently have more interesting takes.

If looking for funnier and constant commentaries that are slightly more interesting than the ones done by other recruited characters, Legion is for sure an excellent choice. Both him and Grunt come from such a different culture and way of life that it makes their dialogues stand out a bit more. Although that is all true, many argue that Tali is the best companion in the trilogy.
