Capcom made an attempt to reboot the Devil May Cry series with DmC, but that turned out to be a failure for the most part. This is why Devil May Cry 5 brought the original series back, and it proved to be a hit as fans’ demands were fulfilled much better.

Still, there’s a lot of room for improvement remaining in this series, and Devil May Cry 6 should change some things if it wants to be seen as a hot new release in the market. If the next game does follow the 10 things in this list, there’s no doubt both old and new fans will be delighted with the franchise’s return.

10 Option To Switch Between Protagonists

By this point there have been a bunch of playable protagonists in the series, with Devil May Cry 5 handing out three of them in the same storyline. Rather than continue this style, the next game should look into the practice that Grand Theft Auto V had employed.

This way, every main character can have their own singular plot, and players can switch into these protagonists at their will. It would also reduce the sudden change of pace that Devil May Cry 5 had brought when the player character was suddenly swapped.

9 Additional Campaign Featuring Lady And Trish

These two have been lumped together as supporting characters for the last two games, and both times their screentime suffered since they weren’t placed in a center stage capacity. For this reason, like it has been seen in the Resident Evil games, additional unlockable content should be brought in Devil May Cry 6 featuring these women.

This can be brought in a way that fills the gaps in the game’s storyline, as Lady and Trish can be seen on their own journey while the guys are doing their thing. Not only would this allow for these two have a starring role, it would also bring in further intrigue to the plot.

8 Making Vergil Playable In The Main Story

Vergil has been handed his own set of moves starting from Devil May Cry 3, but each time he’s just been a palette swap as far as the story is concerned. Now that he’s joined forces with Dante, it’s high time that Vergil becomes a playable character directly involved in the plot.

This way, the level design will be fashioned in such a way that Vergil’s moves are taken into account, while the boss fights can actually feel unique since Vergil has his own style of fighting.

7 Sparda With A Major Role

This family of demon hunters has been fleshed out pretty extensively. Now, fans know the identity of everyone starting from the patriarch Sparda all the way down to grandson Nero. With Vergil having made peace with his brother and son, it’s time for Sparda’s role to arrive.

There’s still a lot of unanswered questions where he’s concerned, namely with how he supposedly died and how far-reaching his role was in the demon world. The most logical route would now be to have Sparda reunite with his children and the drama that unfolds there.

6 The Majority Of The Game Set In The Demon World

Each game has had the protagonists enter this realm, only for them to either escape or the following entry to show them already out of there. Now that Dante and Vergil are trapped in the demon world for some time, Devil May Cry 6 should be set here.

The story doesn’t need to be about their escape or Nero rescuing them, but the main action should be in this realm in order to map it out in certain terms. It would also allow for all kinds of demons to appear, with no excuse of sending bosses back to the demon world either.

5 An Open-World Feature

The demon world would make most sense as an expansive setting that needs to be explored rather than survived. Just like God of War PS4 changed things up for the better by making it an open-world feature, Devil May Cry 6 needs to go that route as well. There shouldn’t be any problems in making this realm an immersive one, as the series has already shown a variety of diverse environments.

The coolest implementation of the open-world map would be to take the protagonists through the different stages of Hell, and the enemies should be indigenous to their environments. It would also make sense with the earlier proposal of swapping between protagonists since each would be in a different area of the demon world.

4 The Return Of Nero’s Devil Bringer

Sure, it was nice to see the character development of Nero from solely using his devil arm into accepting his inherent powers, but gameplay wise the devil bringer was sorely missed in Devil May Cry 5. The plot can easily explain its return as a personal choice of Nero’s.

With the next game potentially available on ninth generation console systems, the devil bringer can be implemented in a host of new ways. An interesting use of this feature can be Nero empowering his devil bringer further by absorbing enemies from the demon world and emulating their attacks.

3 Revamp Of Character Costumes

There have been slight yet noticeable changes in the appearances of the characters within each game, but these have largely carried the same theme. For Devil May Cry 6, there should be a complete revamp, in that their styles take a different turn.

This can be done mainly through a change in the thematic colors, as Dante could shed from a predominantly red overtone to another color. Along with that, the eye-popping nature of these costumes can be amplified, in order to make these characters stand out as larger-than-life figures.

2 A Focus On Horror Over Action

The first game carried the most elements of horror, as enemies were darker in nature and even the jokes had some form of maliciousness injected in them. Newer entries, though, have largely veered toward comedy and action.

However, a drastic turn toward horror would serve to revitalize the series, which in turn will make things unpredictable. Not only can the action be made more aggressive, but the level design, dialogue, and enemy appearance should all carry an eerie feel. Gameplay should reflect this as well, with fewer but stronger enemies around to make the player feel cornered.

1 An Increase In The Difficulty Level

In order to get a wider appeal out of the product, Devil May Cry has become much easier than when it started out. However, the series had initially found its notoriety due to it being so ridiculously challenging. The original and Devil May Cry 3: Dante’s Awakening have been singled out to be among the toughest games of all time.

This feature really should return, as beating the story actually played out as a real accomplishment back then, and it would go splendidly with the horror theme. The likes of Dante, Vergil, and Nero are effective enough protagonists for players to want to master their fighting styles and be up for a grueling challenge laid out by Devil May Cry 6.
