10 Dark Soulsvania
Foregone is a bit of a hodgepodge of ideas. The basic things to note are this. It’s a 2D action game that is linear, but each area does have some replayability to it. It’s not like a Metroidvania but more in tune with something like Dark Souls although not that brutal. When one dies they loose all gold and upgrade points, but they can get it back in various ways which will be a set of tips shared later.
9 Main Health Skills
Since death is almost certain, it is important to mainline the health skills first. On the left side of the skill tree is a route that unlocks Leech which will suck HP from enemies and return it to the player. On the right side is an ability list that grants defensive boosts through a skill called Bulwark. These are both passive, but the active healing ability should also be upgraded as well. The point is forget about offensive stuff at the start.
8 Keep One Of Every Weapon
There are nine weapons in the game. Five of them are melee weapons and the other four are ranged. One thing not mentioned in the first entry is that this is a loot heavy game.
Test out every piece of equipment to see which fits one’s play style the best. Also keep in mind that anything gray is useless in terms of rarity.
7 Spend As Much As Possible
As previously mentioned, currency will be lost in death. In the hub world there are two places of business. One where a mage can grant those aforementioned skills and the other is a blacksmith that deals with equipment. If one has enough currency to buy or upgrade wanted things, do it. It’s a helpful idea to not go out exploring with a full load in other words because it might get lost.
6 Don’t Sell Equipment Until Needed
Another aspect about equipment is that even the worthless stuff should be held onto. Gear can be sold at the blacksmith for gold. However, since one can loose gold, players shouldn’t sell anything until they know they’re going to buy something in other words. Why gain gold if it can be lost is the point of this tip.
5 Use The Ferryman Sparingly
Besides doing the usual corpse run to return lost goods, there is also a Ferryman in the hub area. He will always offer players fifty percent of their earnings back so as not to risk dying before getting to one’s body. Use this method sparingly. On one hand it negates loosing everything. However, if one relies on it too much, that’s also a big loss. That’s just a mathematical tip.
4 Rare Enemy Spawns
Sometimes enemies will spawn in a blue hue. These usually appear near gates or rarer items. Sometimes they are random and sometimes they are permanently slotted to their areas. In the case of the ladder, it might be a good idea to hack away at them on repeat as they tend to dish out rarer gear. It’s a shame bosses can’t be replayed in this manner.
3 Spear And Shotgun For The Win
Everyone has their unique play style which is why the tip was given earlier to test everything out. However, the best load out in the game involves the spear and shotgun. The spear is fast and has a decent range while the shotgun has a devastating area of attack up close. Combo these two together and it’s a killer arsenal. Rarity and lucks plays a big factor too since players might get better equipment in other areas.
2 Slide Into Secrets
Like any good game in a similar style to Metroid or Dark Souls, there are secrets aplenty. It’s a good idea to always try looking for tiny cracks one can slide into.
Sometimes the gap is obvious while other times the openings are hidden. Just know that they are out there in the walls.
1 Speed Boost
Backtracking can be a pain especially when one is on a corpse run. There is an ability that can make players faster, Haste, but that is only granted if players ignore the Leech ability which they shouldn’t. There is another way to increase movement though. If one runs, then slides, then finishes off with a double jump, this will create a good momentum. Practice makes perfect is the best tip of all.
