Days Gone is a big open-world game with an extensive story behind it and, naturally, there are still things that the fans are uncovering.
Despite its mixed reviews, Days Gone was actually one of the most sold Playstation exclusives back in 2019. In fact, gamers who became a part of its community hold this game close to their heart. Recently, it’s gone up the chart again with holiday sales, and its time on Playstation Now.
Those who have just become fans of the game may want to know more about its characters, their stories, and the Freaker virus. What Days Gone trivia is need-to-know in this post-apocalyptic world setting?
10 Deacon Was In The Walking Dead
Deacon St. John spends his days fighting hordes and killings Freakers. However, back in 2010, Deacon’s voice actor, Sam Witwer, actually made an appearance in AMC’s The Walking Dead. He has a small uncredited role as a dead soldier that has turned into a walker in a tank with Rick.
He is present in both the first and second episodes of the show. Funnily enough, one of the episodes is titled “Days Gone Bye”. Looking back on it now, it turned out to be a pretty cool coincidence. Guess fans could call him “Deek, the Freak.”
9 They’re Getting Smarter
Freakers seems to be getting smarter as time goes by. According to Researcher Field Note - 2068, they’ve progressed from being completely clueless to actually wearing jewelry and retaining other personal items. This theory is further bolstered by the fact that there is actually an intelligent mutation of the virus.
During the epilogue, it is revealed that O’Brien has become infected with this strand of the virus but heavily implied that he is not alone. However, from what is known so far, these Freakers will keep their human intelligence while having improved agility and strength.
8 Patches Carry Over
As part of the Challenges DLC, patches were added to the game. Players receive patches as they successfully complete the challenges. They grant special bonuses like increased health item potency, increased stamina, etc.
Surprisingly, not many fans know that patch progress carries their effects into the main game. This doesn’t happen with rings even though they also grant bonuses. These patch-related bonuses can be particularly helpful for those planning to replay the game on a higher difficulty like Survival II, for example.
7 The Colonel’s Mistakes
Although it may seem obvious that the Colonel’s religious propaganda is way too dramatic and over the top to be truthful, there is more than that to prove it’s completely fake. Colonel Matthew Garret plays the role of a very devout Christian, quoting the Bible word per word.
However, even Deacon – who doesn’t seem to have much of a religious background – corrects him when he makes mistakes. Moreover, he makes obvious mistakes like claiming Noah’s Ark was in the book of Revelations when it was in Genesis. For those unfamiliar, Genesis is at the beginning of the bible instead of the end where Revelations is.
6 “Deacon St. John”
Deacon St. John; what an iconic name, right? But, where does it actually come from? Is he really the son of a preacher man as he’s once told in the game? Well, no. Deacon even seems to resent this sly remark as it’s most likely not the first time he’s heard it.
John Garvin, the game’s creative director, is the one who is responsible for Days Gone’s main character’s name. It turns out that “Deacon” was actually Garvin’s pet and “St. John” was the street he grew up on. Given the number of sales in Japan Days Gone has seen, let’s hope Garvin doesn’t use those answers on account security questions.
5 Why Breakers Exist
There are various different types of human Freakers. Breakers are one of the hardest types to deal with – especially early on in the game. But, how has a human turned into such an overwhelmingly strong creature?
Well, according to Lt. Steward in one of the game’s many Research Field Notes (2072): “Homo sapiens mutans corporosus have extremely elevated amounts of anabolic steroids”. This means that breakers are humans that had high levels of testosterone – be that synthetic or naturally high levels of the hormone in their systems.
4 Skizzo Graduated With Honors
Skizzo’s entire persona is absolutely fake. He claimed to have been a gangster that smuggled drugs and guns from California to Oregon. As it turns out, these were all lies. His real name is actually Raymond Sarkozi and, just as Deacon thought, he was a “frat boy”. Skizzo actually went to college and graduated with honors.
The only way to find out more about this character is by exploring his cabin after a certain point in the story. There, Deacon will find a collectible titled “With Honors”; it’s a postcard from his grandparents congratulating him on his academic accomplishments.
3 Joany Gray’s Death
After finishing the “Drinking Himself to Death” storyline, players can read Deacon’s journal entry. The entry talks about how Boozer’s wife, Joany, died and how the MC had to cover for him.
Boozer and Joany got drunk, went on a bike ride, and then crashed off Highway 97. Unfortunately, she passed away afterward. When the Mongrels MC arrived, they called the police and lied so that Boozer wouldn’t be arrested for manslaughter.
Near Chemult, most likely the spot of the accident, players can visit a cross that’s been put up for her that reads “Joany Gray, Ride Forever.”
2 Other Infected Animals
There are actually other types of infections that aren’t thoroughly explored in the game but only briefly mentioned. At some point during the outbreak, there were infected bats. This is mentioned in one of the NERO field note collectibles. However, these bats tore each other apart and most likely went extinct.
The researchers comment on how they fought each other and showed “the same late-stage aggressive behavior seen in other animal groups”. So, most likely, there were other infected animals not mentioned in the game.
1 Deacon’s Mongrel Ring
Besides his bike, Deacon’s Mongrel ring is one of the things he holds dearest to his heart. It is an item of great significance all throughout the game’s story. One thing that most fans might question is the number on it.
Deacon’s ring has a “13” engraved on it; although it was the number of his military unit, it actually represents the letter M – the 13th letter of the alphabet. There are various theories that discuss what this might mean but most likely it stands for Mayhem or Mongrels.
