When it comes to a slick Soulslike experience, Remnant: From The Ashes by Gunfire Games scratches that itch well.

Their third-person shooter streamlines the classic roguelike formula of fight, die, repeat into a super satisfying gun-slinging adventure through dimensions. But whether you’re just starting off or are on a NG+ run, Remnant still takes plenty of opportunities to pound you into the dirt. So to increase your chances of survival here are a few things to keep in mind that just might keep you alive on your next run.

10 Always Rest At Checkpoints

There are moments in Remnant: From The Ashes (especially in post-game when you’re powerful) where overconfidence can set in and Checkpoints will start to seem like they’re slowing down your run. But, whether you’ve just cleared out an area or are about to go through a new fog gate, always take a moment to rest at a Crystal.

Not only will this save your progress, but doing so will also heal you back to max health and restore your ammunition. Resting also opens up the checkpoint as a fast travel option in the menus so you can zip back to Ward 13 for some handy upgrades before jumping right back into where you left off.

9 Bring Plenty Of Ammunition

No matter how powerful your gear there are going to be moments in Remnant: From The Ashes where you’re mobbed with hordes of enemies spawning and everything turns into a grueling mosh pit of violence. Or you’ll have to face off with a massive bullet sponge monster that chews through your ammo.

So having enough bullets to put down any threat should be your number one priority. Although resting at crystals can restore ammo, you never want to be caught short in a fight so make sure to bring plenty of Ammo Boxes with you. These can be bought from most of the Merchants in the game.

8 Stock Up On Consumables

Similar to ammunition, consumables should be your new best friend in this game. There are a number of enemy types that like to include particularly nasty debuffs in their attacks.

These will build in a bar until they reach a critical level and kill you, so make sure to bring something to get rid of it. Examples of a few handy things to carry with you would be Bandages to cope with Bleeding, Antiserum to remove Parasite, Heavy Water Elixir for Irradiated and Greenleaf for Corroded.

7 Call In Reinforcements

There are some pretty tough boss fights in Remnant: From The Ashes (the Undying King being a tricky DPS race ) that can be quite the progress blockers. So if you’re having a hard time with a particular section or fight then try bringing in some help with co-op.

Create a group with your friends to take down a tough area or join in with some randoms to score yourself some extra resources to spend on upgrades or new gear. There are going to be times in Remnant where despite your best efforts, going solo isn’t always the best idea, so never feel bad about bringing along a buddy or two.

6 Aim For A Particular Build

In the early areas of the game, you don’t have to worry too much about what build type you’re going for. But once you start to unlock better and more varied traits, try to have an idea of how you want to play your character.

If you’re rolling as a group try to get roles for everyone as Remnant: From The Ashes allows for a lot of character customization with classes for players. For example, going for crits means big number damage in fights, whilst mod power can be helpful as support and item duration is handy for healers to have. Having the right build can make your progress through the game just that little bit easier.

5 Know When To Retreat

We’ve all been there, you’re throwing yourself at a boss fight over and over again in hopes that you might do a little better with just one more try but it still doesn’t work. In Remnant, there are going to be some fights you’re just not ready for.

Retreating from a level and visiting previous locations for experience and extra resources can sometimes be what helps you through that progress blocker. Or you could try retreating from your current run to re-roll the world for a different challenge.

4 Give In To The Grind

Grinding up levels and resources is a lot more streamlined in Remnant: From The Ashes. Picking creatures off through a sniper’s scope is a lot safer and easier than wandering into melee range as you would in Dark Souls.

Deciding to take a break and grind through an area over and over again is always a good decision in this game as it can net you more resources to spend. Galvanized Iron for example is required for some of the higher levels of upgrades and its drops are few and far between, so finding a spot where it regularly appears can net you quite the advantage.

3 Re-Rolls Are Risky

Since every level in Remnant: From The Ashes is procedurally generated it means you can re-roll them in the World Settings. What this does is rearrange the level, enemy placements, and difficulty as well as increase the rewards level.

Special NPCs and bosses also have a higher chance to spawn on a re-roll, but you should be careful about doing this too early. Re-rolling not only increases the difficulty of creatures, but it also scales their level with the highest player in your party. So if you got some powerful friends onboard your monsters will punch as hard as they can, so get ready for a fight. Doing this can also lead to accidental difficulty soft-locking, so don’t dive into this option too early in the game.

2 Don’t Be Afraid To Use A Guide

Similar to the Dark Souls series, the lore and general information in Remnant: From The Ashes can be a bit obtuse. There are a few NPCs, traits, boss fights, and bits of gear that the games got hidden away in sometimes convoluted ways.

So to make sure you’re not missing out on any missed opportunity, try having a guide to help solve puzzles or find gear. Likewise checking in on the sprawling Reddit Community is worth it as well as there could be tips dropped by other players that could prove useful.

1 Remember To Duck, Dip, Dive, And Dodge

It may seem simple, but knowing when to dodge out of the way can mean the difference between a wipe or getting to that next crucial Checkpoint.

A lot of monsters like to sprint right up into melee range whilst their bigger friends lob ranged attacks at you. So knowing when the right time to dodge out of the way is something you will need to know inside and out. Some gear also comes with added weight which will make you “fat roll”, which means you’ll roll slower. So find an armor set that works best for you and remember to zip out of the way of those attacks.
