Despite giving players an ample amount of time to explore the world of Persona 5, about eighty hours or so, there were still plot threads left dangling by the end. Some of this is addressed with this new version, but there are other questions still left unanswered. For that matter Persona 5 Royal also opens up the door for even more riddles.

Some of these entries fall on the side of plot holes, while others are just that, unanswered questions. As if it needs to be said, a SPOILER warning will be in effect. Also of note, the main protagonist will be addressed as Ren Amamiya, the name given to him in the anime, to make things easier.

10 The Problems With Ren Amamiya

Let’s begin at the start of Ren’s troubles when he is wrongfully accused of a crime he did not commit. What exactly are his parents connection with Sojiro? More so than that, why don’t they contact Ren at all?

Do they not care for him in the slightest? This is especially weird when he gets sent to jail. They may as well be dead, Disney style. On another note, why doesn’t he recognize Shido? If someone screwed up one’s life, best believe they would remember that face no matter if it was dark, or not.

9 The Problems With Morgana

There are a lot of issues with Morgana. First of all, does no one notice Ren carry him around in public? People like cats in Japan, but to not say anything in school for example is strange.

No one can hear him, but his talking does make noise like a cat. Speaking of his speech, once Mementos closes, Morgana says his other self is destroyed, but he still exists as a cat. If this is really true why then can everyone still understand him? They also have no powers, presumably, at that point.

8 Personas In Disguise

On another subject of Morgana, how exactly can he turn into a car and fit people inside of himself? For that matter when he transforms again in Maruki’s Palace, it’s a little too convenient for the plot.

When one really thinks about it, the vehicle situation is never really addressed for Makoto and Futaba either. Makoto has a motorcycle and Futaba has a space ship. Couldn’t they just have used Futaba’s Persona to fly away?

7 Escaping Akechi

How does Akechi get fooled in the police station? This is a trick the Phantom Thieves have never performed before and it’s all a bit too convenient while also being overly elaborate.

For that matter if Akechi was ordered to kill Ren, why doesn’t Shido automatically tell him to go after the others as well? They are a huge liability. Even when Ren is presumed dead, Akechi, or some of Shido’s men, should be keeping tabs on them.

6 What Happened To Satanael?

Satanael, for those that don’t remember, is the giant Persona Ren is able to summon after breaking Arsene’s chains. This is how they are able to defeat Yaldabaoth.

After that happens the first time the team is supposed to have lost their powers, but in Persona 5 Royal they come back. If they get their powers back, why then can’t Ren summon Satanael? Starting a new chapter with an ultimate Persona would have made things too easy is the obvious answer.

5 The Problems With Kasumi

Ren think Sumire’s name is Kasumi because he finds her notebook. This is a convenient way to give the game a plot twist later on. Does he really never hear anyone in his school call her by her real name? For that matter Sumire needs glasses apparently and Kasumi does not.

One could surmise that she is wearing contacts so that’s not that big a deal. However, when Ren finds out she can use a Persona, she is left out of the plot of the Phantom Thieves’ story. This is done to keep the original narrative mostly in tact. Again though, it is convenient to leave her out.

4 Jose’s Fate

Jose is the young kid the party comes across in Mementos. His basic story is that he came there to learn about humans and to also drink flowers.

One can fight him if they collect all of his star stamps, but even if one does defeat him, he just drives away. There is no real conclusion to his character. This matches up with a lot of other mysterious characters that fit his role like the Velvet Room masters. It’s just the role they are assigned.

3 Akechi’s Fate

At the end of the original game, Akechi is presumed dead after he closes the bulkhead on the ship to fight his Cognitive other self.

In this expansion, another version shows up which is later to be revealed as just a wish Maruki granted. That is to say he is a fake. However, if one is able to get the best ending of the game, Akechi, or someone wearing wearing his clothes, walks by Ren’s train.

2 The End

To tack onto that plot point, also on the train Ren gets a buzz on his phone. Akechi walks by as he looks down. After that he looks out the window to his reflection as Joker. This was to tease that perhaps his powers weren’t gone yet.

One could also interpret this as Ren seeing himself as his “true self” aka the rebellious Joker. Now that gamers know there is another game coming out, this is more of a tease. For those unaware, Persona 5 Scramble will be a direct sequel.

1 Is There An American Mementos?

This has nothing to do with any plot threads dangling, but it is a question that has certain fans curious. How does Mementos work? Is the version in the game just pertain to Tokyo, or is it a nationwide thing?

For that matter, does every country have a Mementos? Is there one in the United States? It would be interesting to see the next game branch out and tackle another country. After all, the original idea for this game was to have it take place on a global scale.
