For many of you, today has been a long-time in coming. With the heavily anticipated release of Electronic Arts and DICE’s FPS Battlefield 3, gamers have gone flocking to their respected stores and platforms to make for the battlefield. Unfortunately, one group of gamers has been excommunicated from the adventure, having to resort to the despairing single-player campaign.
A few hours ago - be it by internal error, extreme server taxation, or something more frustrating — the Xbox 360 version of Battlefield 3 became utterly unplayable to play online. Thankfully, DICE is aware of the issue, keeping pace on their Twitter account while trying to get more information and stamp down the problem.
At this moment, it seems that the servers are back online (though there is no mention on what caused the initial issue), and Xbox 360 players can begin playing again. Interestingly, there are now some PS3 players that are stating server issues. If there are any further issues DICE requests that gamers please leave a note on their forums or Twitter.
Even with its impressive review scores from our staff, and countless purchasers, this isn’t exactly the best way for Battlefield 3 to start its tenure. Plus with some fans still getting over the Beta phase and its issues, it could be a point for nemesis Modern Warfare 3, set to release in a few weeks.
Speaking to the Beta, it’s surprising that DICE is having this many server issues right out the gate, especially when they had just gone through a fairly intensive beta round. Obviously this isn’t anything out of the ordinary — even games like Gears of War 3 have their bugs and glitches — but with so much focus on delivering a cinematic experience both online and off, this shouldn’t happen. We all have the mighty online pass forced upon us, after all.
If you’re one of the players that has been affected, or are still experiencing issues, please drop us a line and give us the details. Don’t forget to let DICE know so that they can help fix the problem as well.
Battlefield 3 is currently available for the Xbox 360, PS3, and PC
