Dark Souls 2 came as a big shock at this year’s Spike VGA’s. Though a sequel was to be expected, fans likely weren’t expecting a reveal so soon. Fans likely weren’t expecting the game to be more “approachable” either.

Now, before we raise our pitch forks at From Software, it needs to be understood that “approachable” doesn’t mean easier. Rather, Dark Souls 2 will be more straightforward and direct than its predecessors. This is due to a change in development, as series creator Hidetaka Miyazaki has stepped aside; his role being filled by Tomohiro Shibuya and Yui Tanimura. Shibuya considers himself as “more direct than subtle,” and as such the final game will reflect his personality.

However, that doesn’t necessarily mean the game will be any easier than past titles. Miyazaki is still supervising development of the game, and Namco promises all the challenge players expect from the series.  Accessibility, though commonly seen as a dirty word by the gaming community is actually quite important and it sounds like Shibuya and Tanimura are trying to make Dark Souls 2 as accessible as possible without sacrificing what made Demon’s Souls/Dark Souls so enticing.

With all of this talk of accessibility, it’s interesting that Dark Souls 2 won’t be making it’s way to the Wii U. Players would expect that if From Software and Namco want to expand the series, that would include more console launches as well; however, that doesn’t seem to be the case.

Thankfully, fans have started a petition to bring Dark Souls 2 to the Wii U (we’ve included a link at the bottom of the page). With the similarities in hardware between the Wii U and PS3/Xbox 360, a port certainly sounds feasible - making it quite odd that Namco/From Software have chosen to leave out Nintendo’s latest console. Last year, fans also petitioned to bring Dark Souls to PC, which turned out to be a rousing success - even if the port left something to be desired. Let’s hope gamers will once again convince Namco to bring the series to another platform.
