Maevaris Tilani is a remarkable character from the Dragon Age franchise that appears in several different stories and is mentioned in a few others. She is the widow of Varric Tethras’ cousin, Thorold Tethras. She’s also a Tevinter Magister who is recognized by the Imperial Senate.

Mae is a renowned mage, a reformer, a business-woman, and so many other things. She is always surrounded by many interesting storylines and has a lot on her how to make anyone interested to know what she’s up to next. No wonder many consider her one of the best characters Bioware has ever made.

8 The Character’s Design Was Inspired By Mae West

Not only Maevaris’ appearance but also her nickname of “Mae” are both based on a real person. Mary Jane “Mae” West, daughter of the boxer Jack West, was an actress, writer, and comedian. She was by far one of the most outstanding personalities back in the 1930s.

When comparing pictures of Mae West in that decade and the chosen look for Maevaris, it is quite easy to see how much the Dragon Age character was influenced by Mae West’s bone structure and her expensive haircut.

7 She Caused a Massive Scandal in Tevinter

Although she was called a male at birth, Mae has always identified herself as a woman. Brave and bold, she decided to openly live as a woman at the age of 15. According to David Gaider, Bioware considers her the first true transgender character in the franchise.

Bioware acknowledges Serendipity, but that character is seen as a “Drag Queen” by their team. Many fans would like to see not just Mae in the next Dragon Age 4, but transgender representation, as well.

6 Her Husband Was a Dwarf

Although they are not formally married, Maevaris Tilani and Thorold Tethras fell in love. They lived together as a couple, causing her to be considered a part of the House of Tethras. Mae became a trusted member of the house, a business partner, and part of the family. It seems they had a really loving relationship, and if we had a chance to see it, they’d be among the best couples in Dragon Age.

Unfortunately, Thorold Tethras was assassinated by Mae’s enemies. This crushed Mae’s heart, of course, making her crave revenge. She spent all that was inherited from her husband to do it. Mae never stopped missing him and was painfully aware of what she lost.

5 Her Place In The Magisterium Was Questioned

Tevinter stands out as the oldest extant human nation in Dragon Age. The Magisterium is what the upper house of the Imperial Senate is called. After her father died, Mae decided to seek revenge. Her father was a gentle man who was too good for his own sake, and that behavior got him killed. Since seats in the Magisterium can be inherited, Maevaris Tilani became the new Magister, but not immediately.

Moreover, Mae is not like her father. She has a strong personality and would not be pushed over. That’s why she is seen as a threat and her inheritance of the seat was challenged by those who wanted a behaved Magister for their own gains. She was smart enough to form an alliance with Thorold Tethras, and eventually outmaneuver her enemies in order to take her birthright.

4 She is Featured in Many Dragon Age stories

Her reputation was made on her accomplishments over old-fashioned traditions and her competence in exerting revenge. She is always true to herself and acted on what makes her happy, but she is also unforgiving to those who wronged her.

Mae managed to avenge her father and outmaneuver those who intended to prevent her from inheriting a seat in the magisterium. Besides that, she is a powerful spell caster who is not afraid of confrontation. That is most likely why Varric thought it was wise not to make her angry.

3 People of Tevinter Fear And Respect Her

Magisters are traditionally mages. Mae’s father, Magister Athanir Tilani, was a mage. It is only logical that he’d make sure his only heir would be one, as well. Although she does know many spells, we do not see her in action too many times.

But Mae has so many stories surrounding her that battle sequences might be a waste. Still, her power is shown to us from time to time. In the comics, we see her making illusions, battling against Fade demons, and even burning another mage to the bones.

2 Mae Is A Powerful Mage (Obviously)

At some point, many young magisters desired major changes. Unfortunately, they did not have the power or even the courage to push for it. But Maevaris had all of the necessary things to push for change. Eventually, she created the Lucerni, a new political party that would push for reforms.

Many young magisters joined in, but Mae’s influence and position made her the Lucerni’s Elder Stateswoman. Later on, a very powerful mage, Magister Dorian Pavus, joined Mae’s Party. With him as her right hand, she and her party had a lot more influence and could push to make real changes.

1 She Is A Woman Of Her Word

Magister Maeveris Tilani is honored, and she makes sure that her reputation will be kept that way. Her code of honor is one of nobility. She will not go back on her word. That was true even when she was forced to face another mage. Mae simply won’t back down.

Mae is seen as someone respected and feared. Challenging Mae’s convictions is not something that many dare to do. Especially considering that she is willing to use her most powerful spells to keep her promises.
