BioWare’s Dragon Age: Inquisition is packed with hundreds of hours of content, so it’s a testament to how good the game is that many players were still left wanting more. Gamers craving a return to Thedas got their wish today with the release of Jaws of Hakkon, the first single player DLC expansion.

BioWare caught Inquisition gamers by surprise yesterday with the announcement of Jaws of Hakkon, which is now available exclusively on PC and Xbox One. (Presumably the PS4, PS3, and Xbox 360 versions will follow at some point down the line.) The official trailer for the Jaws of Hakkon DLC reveals that players will have ancient mysteries to unravel, angry tribesmen to pacify, and yet another dragon to slay.

As hinted yesterday by leaked screens and achievement info, Jaws of Hakkon will take the Inquisitor and his companions into the Frostback Basin, located in the Frostback Mountains between Ferelden and Orlais. Surprisingly, however, the area revealed in the trailer looks surprisingly temperate, with no snow or frost in site. Instead, there are lush forests, jagged coastlines, and even some Ewok-style walkways built into the canopies of trees.

The video also reveals a bit of the DLC’s storyline. Centuries prior to Inquisition, the savage Avvar people resurrected their god Hakkon Wintersbreath in the form of a dragon, and the previous Inquisitor fought to bring down the beast. Now a group calling themselves the Jaws of Hakkon are attempting the same scheme, so it’s up to the Inquisitor and their companions to make sure history repeats itself and the good guys win the day.

The savage Avvar enemies definitely look intimidating, decked out in white body paint and wielding glowing weaponry. It looks like players can also expect another of Inquisition’s trademark dragon battles, presumably near the DLC’s climax. The Inquisitor won’t be without allies among the Avvar, however. One of the leaked achievements revealed yesterday challenges players to “Impress the Avvar of Stone-Bear Hold and gain their friendship.”

BioWare has seriously upped their game when it comes to post-release single player DLC expansions over the years, and hopefully Jaws of Hakkon will maintain that bar of quality. Gamers should probably expect BioWare to be at least as ambitious with its DLC plan for Inquisition as it was with Mass Effect 3. That game got multiple singleplayer DLC expansions, including the excellent Omega and Citadel packs. Jaws of Hakkon is probably just the first of several more adventures yet to come for the Inquisitor.

Dragon Age: Inquisition - Jaws of Hakkon is now available for PC and Xbox One. There is currently no release date announced for when it will be available for PS3, PS4, or Xbox 360. Jaws of Hakkon costs $15, and BioWare recommends players be at least level 20 before tackling it.
