Microsoft’s exclusive third-person shooter franchise Gears of War has brought them many tastes of success over the years, with Gears 3 breaking series sales records in 2011. People Can Fly’s Gears of War: Judgment however, took a dive in sales and critical acclaim as a series of high profile names exited parent company Epic Games.

While we may not know what the future holds for the series, Epic Games has revealed the next batch of downloadable content set for release in June for the Judgment prequel.

There’s been no shortage of content coming from People Can Fly and Epic Games, with both the Call to Arms and MAXIM packages already available online (the latter for free). Epic Games hasn’t stated how much the DLC will cost, but gamers without a season pass will likely be able to find this relic for around 1,000 MSP if the pricing structure remains similar to what it was for Call to Arms.

The “Lost Relics” DLC  introduces a new game mode called ‘Breakout’, which pits two teams against each other, each with a single objective: the offensive team has limited lives and must deliver a flag to a certain location, whilst the defensive team has unlimited lives and operates completely defensively near the flag’s destination. It sounds destined to bring out the camper in all of us, but it’s an intriguing idea which certainly encourages teamwork and communication - especially for the attacking team.

Veterans from the Gears of War 3 era will be delighted to hear one of the game’s most popular maps, Checkout, will be returning in the DLC. Set in a barren and blown-to-bits shopping center, the open concept and simultaneously oft-clustered map was a great source of chaotic fun. Three new maps will also enter the fray, entitled Lost City, Museum and Ward respectively. Ward will be the only map available for the Overrun game mode, whilst the others are set up for the usual bloody arrangements. As usual, the DLC will also feature a new selection of weapon and armor skins which have yet to be revealed.

What do you think about the Lost Relics DLC? Another game mode is intriguing (and needed), and it’s good to see the developers attempting to make up for the original lack of map options included in the game.

Gears of War: Judgment is available exclusively for Xbox, with the Lost Relic DLC coming in June.
