Now, it turns out that even developers that don’t have a direct connection to Star Wars want to join in the celebration. I Am Bread developer Bossa Studios announced today that a new game mode based on the sci-fi franchise is available for free to all players who have completed the first level. It’s appropriately called “Starch Wars” and it looks hilarious.
Starch Wars is a fully playable space combat simulator that takes place in the I Am Bread universe. The press release from Bossa is a great combination of the game’s noted humor and an homage to Star Wars.
As can be seen in the above trailer, the space simulator stays true to the graphical style of I Am Bread while creating something that looks like it could be a fun diversion from the well-received main game.
Following the destruction of the Petrol Station, the remaining crumbs of the rebellious fleet have been intercepted as they head to the planet of All-dough-naan. A lone freedom fighter with the call sign Bread Leader picks up the distress signal and speeds to their aid. And yep, you guessed it; he’s their only hope.
For gamers who haven’t played the actual title, I Am Bread allows players to take on the role of what can only be described as “sentient bread”, with the simple task of becoming toast throughout various levels. A lot of the fun of the game comes from the controls, with each corner of the bread being mapped to a different button. Players must flip the bread in the direction they want to go in order to progress. It’s one of the sillier games to come out in recent years, but it’s provided a lot of laughs on YouTube and Twitch.

Bossa has a long history of using humor in its other games, like Surgeon Simulator, as well. It’s nice to see the company’s trademark humor transitioned so well to a different intellectual property. The fact that the update was released for free is also refreshing, considering this is an era where it seems like publishers are always looking for additional ways to earn money through DLC.
May the Fourth be with you.
