One really has to wonder just what has been going through the minds of the folks at Capcom lately. Not only has the fiasco with Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D’s save system put a bit of a dent in their reputation, but now the cancellation of the much-anticipated Mega Man Legends 3 has definitely left many gamers in a sour mood. With the sad news still fresh in many fans’ minds, one fan who helped with the game’s development has come forward to talk about some of the things going on behind the scenes.
The fan in question, one Brian Austrin, is a member of the Capcom-Unity forum’s devroom, having worked on promotion for Mega Man Legends 3 during its development. He was one of the first to leak information on the game’s development to the fans, and encouraged the development team to continue leaking information to further entice them.
Austrin directly reported to one Joveth Gonzalez, a former community manager of the project who was a major source of insider information on the now-canceled Mega Man Legends 3. However, that ended when Gonzalez left for other job opportunities, and information became harder to find.
The constant delays of the project threw up a red flag that things were looking grim, as Austrin was one of many who believed that the game would be canceled before development truly began. The end of the prototype demo for the 3DS launch also caused some concern, and Austrin felt that the developers should have gone ahead with releasing it anyway despite criticisms of the game’s quality. In Austrin’s opinion, any feedback from the fans would’ve been better than nothing at all.
After developing an NPC character for the game that apparently got a strong response from Capcom’s staff, Austrin expressed his belief that the cancellation of MML3 was yet another poor decision by Capcom, citing both the Resident Evil debacle and their cancellation of another Mega Man game as examples.
The most distrubing bit of information surrounding the project was a rumor that Capcom could receive an attack on their company similar to that launched against Sony’s PSN. He mentioned that if Capcom was attacked by outraged fans, other companies would certainly notice, and could feel as though they have to pander to the fans.
Austrin was right about that much, as fans have already started taking action in response to the game’s cancellation. A group on Facebook recently started a petition to restart the Mega Man Legends 3 project, which already has around 100,000 strong behind it. It’s certainly nice to see how people are getting behind this game’s development as Keiji Inafune himself, who left Capcom a while ago, apologized to fans for the game’s failure to launch.
What are your thoughts on the cancellation of Mega Man Legends 3? Could Capcom actually be the victim of a denial of service attack as a result? Leave us your thoughts in the comments.
