There are very few game franchises that are capable of rivalling the pure amount of carnage and brutality that’s often found in Mortal Kombat, but there’s a lot more to NetherRealm’s iconic series then just severing heads and removing spinal cords. The franchise itself has a lot of depth to it and is a ton of fun to play, so it’s easy to see why gamers have been waiting on the next entry for quite some time.

At long last, they now know when to expect the series’ return with the newly unveiled Mortal Kombat X.

After franchise creator Ed Boon teased an announcement on Twitter and a poster of the alleged game was leaked, fans knew that a Mortal Kombat announcement was inbound, but many believed E3 2014 was the stage that title would be announced on. It turns out that wasn’t the case, however, as gamers have finally gotten a glimpse of Mortal Kombat X through a new cinematic trailer that’s arrived prior to the big event.

Featuring a pair of the franchise’s most iconic fighters (Sub-Zero and Scorpion), the trailer holds absolutely nothing back; not that gamers would have expected Boon and his cohorts to tone down the violence. After watching the flashy battle unfold — leading many to believe that Sub-Zero has definitely seen better days — it’s revealed that the new game will be hitting unnamed consoles in 2015.

There’s not much else to go on, and the trailer itself doesn’t show any actual gameplay, but it’s an interesting glimpse of the action that awaits fans in the forthcoming installment. Those hoping to see some actual in-game carnage should expect to see and learn more about Mortal Kombat X during E3, so stay tuned to Game Rant for more details on the title as they arrive.

Mortal Kombat X will be arriving at some point in 2015 on Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3, PS4, and PC.
