If you’re a fan of trading card games, the name Richard Garfield most likely rings a bell. With the release of the Mass Effect Legendary Edition, fans are falling in love once again with the dozens of squad members featured in the series. Both veterans of the sci-fi series and newcomers will find characters that will endear themselves to Commander Shepard and leave lasting impressions. The intimate relationships in the games may be internet memes, but fans are also quite attached to these characters. Mordin Solus, for instance, is a hyper-intelligent salarian who is much more empathetic and brave than what the character trope often displays....

One of the most successful, and utterly bizarre, series of all time will be celebrating its 25th anniversary this year — I’m speaking, of course, about Konami’s Metal Gear franchise. It’s hard to believe that Snake and friends have already been sneaking around for a quarter of a century, but it sounds like there’s even more in store for fans in the coming months. Konami will be holding the Metal Gear 25th Anniversary event in Midtown Tokyo, Japan, and it’s here that big announcements pertaining to the series are expected to be made....

Five years after the development alpha was released, Minecraft continues to shatter conceptions about just how big an indie game can get. The sandbox survival game already had plenty of positive press this week with the announcement of the upcoming live-action movie in the works, but in true Minecraft fashion, there is even more good news to follow. It shouldn’t come as any surprise that Minecraft has been shattering sales records, already having sold a million copies on the PS3 alone and has moved upwards of 33 million units across all platforms....

One of the most-anticipated films of 2013, Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim isn’t just scheduled for epic monster versus robot action on the big screen, the budding franchise is also set to deliver a tie-in video game this summer. Two months after the project was outed by the Australian Classification Board, Warner Bros. Interactive, along with developer Yuke’s, have released the first trailer for their Pacific Rim brawler. Unfortunately, judging by the footage (above), eager fans of the movie should probably not get their hopes up for a quality Pacific Rim gaming experience - at least not one that features particularly innovative Jaeger and Kaiju action....

Ruh roh…the latest patch for Bethesda’s epic RPG, Skyrim has already started causing problems among users. Perhaps most concerning: all magick resistances are invalid - meaning mages will have a lot more difficulty as they progress through the game. Users have also experienced frame drop in some instances, as well. Bethesda is aware of the problem and is already working on another patch. Skyrim’s 1.2 patch had worked to solve a number of issues, but as it is with programming, fresh bugs will inevitably find their way into even a patched game....

United Front Games’ Sleeping Dogs has traveled a long road. Originally titled Black Lotus, then branded with Activision’s “True Crime” label, before ultimately being canceled, and then renamed once more when Square Enix acquired the IP, the game will finally make its debut late this summer. Will the long development time be worth the wait? If the most recent build of the game is any indication, the fortunes of this Hong Kong action game are looking good....

Joining BioWare’s free-to-play reboot of Command & Conquer and Piranha Games’ reboot of MechWarrior as throwbacks to ’90s PC gaming is a spiritual successor of the biggest video game franchises of the era: Star Citizen. Star Citizen is the ambitious spiritual successor to Wing Commander and is being created independently by a team lead by Chris Roberts, the man responsible for Privateer, Wing Commander, Starlancer and in part, Freelancer. It was unveiled weeks ago and is being financed mostly through private investors, although to gauge the true scope of the project through player interested, Roberts and co....

Alongside the reveal of some new trailers for games like Bloodborne and Metal Gear Online, The Game Awards also a few game announcements. The Banner Saga developer Stoic, for example, took to the stage to reveal that a follow-up to their critically acclaimed RTS is in development. Moreover, the developers confirmed that the game would release in 2015. Since this was just a brief announcement, we don’t know too much about The Banner Saga 2 outside of some general assumptions....

Welcome to our regular gameplay impressions and video post where we record our first 10-30 minutes with a new game, and provide some general impressions on that early playthrough. Today’s game: The Sandbox from developer Pixowl. Starting its life in 2012 as a humble mobile game, The Sandbox draws influence from the classic “falling sand” game archetype from the online flash game days of yore. For those new to the term, players are presented with - as the name suggests - a sandbox, and a series of pixellated ‘sands’ that represent various elements....

It’s been a long time coming, but finally The Walking Dead: Episode 5 is almost here. In fact, Telltale Games has just announced a release date for the finale, and it’s right around the corner. On November 19th, players on PC, Mac, and iOS devices will be able to get their hands on ‘No Time Left,’ while Xbox 360 and PS3 players will have to wait until November 20th to see how the story wraps up....

Life isn’t fair. This rule is especially true in the world of Telltale Games’ The Walking Dead: a post-civilization America ridden with zombies, bandits and myriad other dangers that have no mercy to spare for the young or the weak. Luckily for Clementine, only one of those words describes her accurately. Having learned all that she could from last season’s protagonist, Lee, Clementine treads wearily into the first episode of The Walking Dead’s second season, ‘All That Remains’....

In a time when the word “franchise” is commonly associated with “annual release,” waiting four years for a sequel to The Witcher 2: Assassin of Kings has been somewhat refreshing. Developer CD Projekt RED has delayed the game’s release multiple times, with the most recent delay announcement citing a need to finish polishing the game and rid it of remaining bugs. One of the dangers of delaying games for too long is that, upon their release, they can end up looking graphically dated (especially in extreme cases like I Am Alive, which began development in 2003 and wasn’t released until 2012)....

Many have praised Xbox for releasing two different consoles at the same time, but for a number of reasons, it could end up backfiring in a major way. Both PlayStation and Xbox will release two consoles each when the next generation officially kicks off next month. Gamers who want a PS5 will have a choice between a regular console or a digital version that comes without a disc drive. Xbox has taken a different approach....

The beautiful realms created by the medium are some of the most iconic in popular culture. One might interpret certain entries in the fantasy genre as virtual fairytales, complete with heroes, princesses, and even a handful of dragons for good measure....

The fighting game genre is filled with some of the most iconic franchises in video game history. From Street Fighter to Mortal Kombat and Super Smash Bros, there are plenty of well-known fighting games with huge fanbases. However, there are many excellent lesser-known fighting titles that don’t get the attention they deserve. Whether they’re smaller indie-titles or sleeper hits in a larger established series, for one reason or another, these games have flown under many players’ radars....
