In the Pokemon franchise, it’s hard to miss the tool known as the Pokedex, the little gadget that records various details about encountered Pokemon. This handy information usually boils down to their species, typing, height, weight and some flavor text describing that species’ behaviors and habits. Some of these entries are just adorable. Every Pokemon has an established overall size, big or small. Fans often don’t consider the real-life inspirations for all of these different critters, though....

So with the average video game blockbuster costing around $60 (more if you shelled out for a limited or collector’s edition), it’s not unreasonable for gamers to expect a good experience or, at the very least, a game that works at launch. In the last few years, however, games that are broken at launch seem to be a regular occurrence, especially in the last 18 months....

The MMORPG genre is one of the most interesting and growing in the gaming industry. From the release of games such as World of Warcraft and RuneScape, the massively-multiplayer online role-playing game genre has taken the world by storm. While the James Bond franchise made a triumphant return to the big screen this Fall, the same can’t be said for its video-game appendage. Following a run of several ill-fated ventures to revive 007’s gaming dominance in the current generation – Quantum of Solace, Goldenye 007, Blood Stone, Goldeneye 007: Reloaded – 007 Legends debuted this October and its reception has been demonstrably negative. Unfortunately, Legends appears to be the epitome of developer Eurocom’s recent fortunes, and the UK-based studio is implementing a major restructuring plan as a result....

The release date for the PC version of Batman: Arkham City has changed a few times. First it was scheduled for November 8, then November 15. Thankfully, Warner Bros. Interactive has finally decided to step in and set things straight. The PC version of Batman: Arkham City will be released on November 22, 2011, in North America and November 25, 2011, in the European territories. The release date for the PC version of Batman: Arkham City had sort of been lost in the shuffle of other issues surrounding the game, such as anger over the VIP Pass required to play as Catwoman (news that some copies of the game had missing or invalid codes couldn’t have helped matters, either)....

By now, you’ve probably heard that Cyberpunk 2077 has been delayed by another three weeks. That puts Cyberpunk out on December 10th, which is too late to compete in this year’s Game Awards where it was expected to sweep pretty much every category. There’s been speculation on what exactly happened to cause yet another delay, including on theory where this was all done to troll a single Twitter user. Apparently, CD Projekt Red is not so petty as to delay the biggest game of a generation just to troll one dude on social media....

More than a year after Diablo 3 finally made its long-overdue (and distressingly buggy) debut on PC, Blizzard officially confirmed the game’s console incarnation during Sony’s “See the Future” event. Currently slated for both PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4, Diablo 3 may ultimately appear on additional, non-Sony consoles, as well. For now, Blizzard is keeping mum on the subject of the game’s release date - we don’t yet know if Diablo 3 will be a PS4 launch title, like inFAMOUS: Second Son, Killzone: Shadow Fall, Driveclub and Watch_Dogs - but a trio of new trailers and a selection screenshots show that the PS3 version is shaping up nicely....

Much like EA Sports has enjoyed dominance in many of the key sports game categories in the world, from soccer to football, 2K Sports has placed themselves in a prime position for basketball dominance with their NBA 2K series. This and last year’s iterations, NBA 2K12 and NBA 2K11, were some of the best sports games period, rivaling even EA Sports’ work on Madden and FIFA. But all that is potentially going to change, as EA Sports has confirmed the return of the NBA Live franchise for this year....

Actor Simu Liu, who is all set to become the first Asian superhero lead in the upcoming Marvel Studios film Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, has spoken up against anti-Asian speech and hate crimes. In an essay, the Chinese-Canadian actor calls out all the “bystanders and witnesses” of these crimes for not standing up for what is right. While quoting facts about the increase in hate crimes against Asians in the USA, especially during the pandemic, Liu expressed concern for his parents....

During Microsoft’s E3 2012 Press Conference, there were a few unexpected surprises, and even more known quantities unveiled during the hour-long event. Among those known quantities, but one we’d yet to have officially confirmed, was Splinter Cell: Blacklist. For their next entry in the long-running stealth franchise, Ubisoft was looking to eliminate the memory of the less-than-favorable Splinter Cell: Conviction, while also introducing some faster-paced gameplay – and they proved that with the game’s demo....

Given the track record of the studio producing it, gamers don’t exactly need more convincing when it comes to The Last of Us. But that certainly isn’t stopping Naughty Dog from stirring up even more anticipation at Gamescom 2012, with a brand new trailer and set of images released today. Atmosphere and gritty realism are at the heart of the new assets, even confirming that that the game’s protagonist, Joel, was at one time aligned with the darker side of humanity....

For quite some time, The Sims has been a massively popular franchise; with launches across PCs, consoles, mobile and even Facebook, the series has let players run wild and create or destroy virtual lives with a few deft clicks of a mouse. But the latest iteration of the game, The Sims 4 heavily divided opinion, worrying some that it would be the final Sims game in the series. While many liked the new emotions system that EA introduced (that could even kill Sims through laughter) some reviews didn’t feel that the new game was worth the full price....

With so little to choose between either Xbox One or PlayStation 4, any and all minor discrepancies have suddenly taken on a vast and vital importance. After sitting through a few hours of server errors on Valentine’s Day, Xbox One and PC owners who had received a Titanfall beta code were able to spend late Friday night and all day Saturday unlocking Burn Cards and calling in Titans in across the beta’s multiple multiplayer matches. Unfortunately, gamers who did not receive a beta key had been stuck experiencing the game second-hand all weekend through hands-on previews....

If the dozens of Call of Duty clones out there have taught us anything, it’s that many game developers believe it’s possible to shortcut the long and arduous path to success by simply copying what already popular games have done. Whether or not this is actually an effective tactic is up for debate, but it’s certainly a depressing way of approaching the creative process, which is why it’s a relief when developers actively resist conformity....

Most would agree that the biggest problem with Watch Dogs wasn’t the gameplay, it was the hype. When the game premiered - arguably too early - at E3 2012, it practically stole the show. The first trailer promised a fully interactive open-world that players could mold to their liking. The graphics looked stunning, with advanced bloom lighting, dynamic shadows, and moody weather effects. Coming out of E3, the community was buzzing: this was the next-generation experience players were waiting for....

With both its fifth expansion pack and its tenth anniversary on the way this fall (and a movie coming next year), World of Warcraft should be getting ready for a lot of celebrating. Despite all that excitement, the Blizzard buzz took a bit of a hit this week when it was revealed that the aging MMO has lost close to a million subscribers over the summer months. It’s likely that Warlords of Draenor and the tenth anniversary celebrations will bring some fans back around, so Blizzard isn’t sweating the loses (at least not publicly) just yet....

In the age of toxic masculinity surrounding gaming culture, female characters play an essential cornerstone to balance it. They’ve come a long way since the first iterations of Lara Croft from Tomb Raider & Jill Valentine from Resident Evil, those two being the only females to carry the flag. Luckily for gamers, there are plenty of strong female lead characters we see in today’s games rather than ten or twenty years ago....
