Ever since its initial reveal, it’s been clear that Sunset Overdrive’s priority has been on entertaining gamers over providing a thought-provoking critique of violence and player interaction in the popular media. That has its place, just as bazookas that fire T.N.T.-covered teddy bears have found a home in this upcoming Xbox One exclusive. This is then where the colorful cannon fodder that populate the game’s world come into play. From pustule-covered mutants to missile-toting robots, it looks as though Insomniac Games is intent on continuing the over-the-top streak they’ve set with the weapons and world that will make up Sunset Overdrive....

It’s been over five and a half years since The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion released into the hands’ of eager adventurers, an even longer wait than gamers were subject to between that and 2002’s Morrowind. Both games were praised by critics and fans alike for offering players a world to escape into, an open world where they could live and explore for days worth of real-time hours. Strategy games, whether in the form of real-time or turn-based war games, empire-building, or other flavors often come with lots of micromanaging, complicated controls, and complex menus. James Cameron’s Aliens (1986) may have defined the iconic ‘space marine’ for the future of both film and video games, but with Alien: Isolation, the developers at Creative Assembly are going to the just-as-iconic source material. And while Ridley Scott’s original Alien (1979) may be a master class in suspense and tension, nowhere near as many games have turned to it for inspiration. As the name implies, the developers of Isolation are looking to change that; gone are the squads of machine-gun-toting marines, exchanged for everyday tools, and a single Xenomorph from which to flee....

With a drivable Batmobile, a brand new (and non-lethal) disruptor gun, and a whole menagerie of playable characters, Rocksteady and Warner Bros. Interactive’s upcoming superhero simulator Batman: Arkham Knight is bringing a lot of new material to the table - but it doesn’t have everything. For one, it doesn’t have multiplayer. That’s not an oversight or a budget-mandated omission, either. Rocksteady didn’t want Batman: Arkham Knight to have multiplayer, at least not according to director Stefon Hill....

After a seemingly long wait that followed its releases on the Xbox One and PlayStation 4, Grand Theft Auto 5 finally made its way to the PC. One would think that, after already being out on two generations of consoles, people would’ve had their fill, but no, the game quickly became the most concurrently-played game on Steam. It’s been a tough year of studio closures, but in this very tight knight community there seems to be the sense that with every job loss comes at least one new opportunity. Case in point is Rockstar’s Vancouver studios, which has unfortunately closed its doors. Luckily, alongside the closure of Rockstar Vancouver, comes the opening of a new studio in Oakville, Ontario to become part of Rockstar Toronto. Members of Rockstar Vancouver’s team (there were said to be about 35 developers on staff at the time of the closure) are being offered a position at Rockstar Toronto or one of the other various Rockstar Games facilities based around North America....

One way of ensuring a happy new year is to see that the old one ends on a particularly low note - so whether you end up scratching a disc, smashing a TV, or emptying an entire 6-pack of beer all over your home console, just know that these gaffes now belong to 2013. Things can only get better, right? Sadly some end of year events have more staying power than others, and in the case of indie developer Hello Games, the studio’s 11th hour misfortune may have done some real lasting damage....
