JRPG typically means Japanese Role-Playing Game. These are games that, as well as being in developed in Japan, have a distinct type of gameplay. They focus on story, character development, combat, and exploration. Most of them are turn-based, with immersive storylines that lure gamers into playing dozens of hours. JRPGs have existed for decades, and they have given gamers incredible franchises like Final Fantasy and Persona. These games enjoyed massive popularity back in the ’80s and ’90s, and are currently enjoying a resurgence, especially in countries outside Japan....

Long before Disney purchased George Lucas’ LucasArts, the company was a juggernaut of the video game industry. LucasArts is best known today by modern gamers for its Star Wars releases, but back in the 1990s, it was synonymous with the point-and-click genre. Minecraft Dungeons has a lot of unique and fun mechanics for players to experience; however, there are also some that are very peculiar. The Chaos Wastes DLC for Vermintide 2 can provide quite the challenge for even the most skilled party of players. These constantly shifting wastelands can be a little tricky to beat as a failure on even one stop in the Expedition means starting the whole thing all over again. On lower difficulties, this isn’t as much of an issue as you can regain that ground relatively easily, but above Champion and beyond every step is a battle and an entire party wipe can come out of nowhere in seconds....

Disappointingly for many long time Paper Mario fans, the latest installment in the franchise, The Origami King, still hasn’t returned to its RPG roots that made Super Paper Mario and The Thousand-Year Door so popular, instead going for a more action/adventure play style that’s reminiscent of The Legend of Zelda series. This doesn’t mean fans can’t play their own way, as there are enough items, weapons, and powers to allow any version of Mario to save Princess Peach and defeat King Olly....

As part of this and next month’s Xbox Live Arcade House Party, Alan Wake’s American Nightmare might at first seem like a watered down version of Remedy’s retail release. With Wake now travelling across the country, and facing off with his evil alter ego Mr. Scratch, there are elements to American Nightmare that seem much more disposable than a coherent story, but Remedy wants to put those rumors to rest....

If there’s one comic book inspired video game that everyone is looking forward to playing this year it’s got to be Batman: Arkham City. The follow up to Rocksteady’s well received and uber-successful Batman: Arkham Asylum is getting prepped to spread its wings and fly this October, and fans of The Batman and fans of great games alike are just sitting on their wallets waiting for Warner Bros. to come and take their money....

BioWare’s Dragon Age: Inquisition is packed with hundreds of hours of content, so it’s a testament to how good the game is that many players were still left wanting more. Gamers craving a return to Thedas got their wish today with the release of Jaws of Hakkon, the first single player DLC expansion. BioWare caught Inquisition gamers by surprise yesterday with the announcement of Jaws of Hakkon, which is now available exclusively on PC and Xbox One....

Last week Game Rant had the opportunity to jump into the cooperative multiplayer gameplay options of the upcoming Tom Clancy title, Ghost Recon: Future Soldier. We had previously tested out the campaign in single-player, but this time, we got to toy with the gadgets and weapons of the future while synchronizing our kill shots with player-controlled teammates. There is no doubt that thousands upon thousand of gamers around the world are waiting to see one game this coming week at E3 2012: Halo 4. The game’s military organizations are already making worldwide headlines, and it hasn’t even been released yet. While the Halo 4 Beta is going on as we speak, few have been brave enough to leak footage or images online - at least, in any quality that’s even remotely visible....

There are plenty of games arriving in November, but the most anticipated of them all is unquestionably Halo 4. Gamers are anxious to see whether or not 343 Industries can live up the legacy that the former Halo developer, Bungie, has left behind. Fans have been waiting years for Master Chief to finally step back into the spotlight of the Halo franchise, and in less than a week he will, but there’s still no overlooking the additional Spartan Ops campaign that Xbox Live Gold subscribers will get access to for free....

Many people consider L.A. Noire to be one of the best games of the year, and for good reason. (see our review here) The combination of Rockstar’s trademark sandbox style of gameplay with an excellently-written story set in 1940’s Los Angeles makes for a surefire contender for game of the year in the eyes of many fans. Though the game has been a smash hit on the consoles, PC gamers have been missing out on the crime-fighting fun....

UPDATE: NetherRealm Studios have since clarified the release schedule for DLC. We’re just two weeks away from the hotly anticipated release of Mortal Kombat X, and as such NetherRealm Studios are turning the hype machine up to eleven. Just yesterday we were given a sneak peek at the first half hour of the game, as well as our first glimpse of gameplay from Tower Mode — and today we’re hearing more details about when we can expect to see the game’s DLC offerings....

Rivals cars that can be taken down in a shower of sparks and destruction? Check. Hidden billboards to discover and crash though? Yep. Open world, go-anywhere gameplay in a sprawling urban environment? Count on it. Criterion Games’ heritage isn’t hard to spot in the new, annotated trailer for October’s Need for Speed Most Wanted (above). In everything but name, Most Wanted is shaping up to be a spiritual sequel to 2008’s acclaimed Burnout Paradise....

EA Sports has taken heat over this year’s release of NHL 15 on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, a game which lacks many basic features that were in last year’s game. It appears EA is attempting to make amends with the first Free Content Update for the title getting released this week. That said, the list of added content makes us wonder - again - just what kept these features from making it into the initial game upon release....

As promised, the first in a three set of DLC missions for Saints Row: The Third has been announced for a January 17th release. Titled Genkibowl VII, this DLC package will see the return of not just the man-cat Professor Genki, who players encountered during his Super Ethical Reality Climax, but the over the top antics of Saints Row: The Third. To help illuminate that point THQ has released some new screenshots and a brief trailer that show the four events that the leader of the Saints will be taking part in....

Twenty years have passed since the original Sonic the Hedgehog game came out, and as such, Sega and Sonic Team decided to celebrate in grand style with Sonic Generations. The game promises to take players through various stages from the previous games, remastered and remixed for the current generation. Does it live up to the hype?
