Video games, as we know, get one hell of a bad rap. I remember back when the 3DS was released, the tabloids were spouting all these horror stories about the handheld’s 3D effect. To hear these doomsayers tell it, the glasses-free 3D function was some kind of unholy witchcraft. The media reacted like the first caveman to discover fire; scratching their hairy cave-behinds in mingled befuddlement and terror. When televisions were introduced in the fifties, some people were convinced that they would rot our brains....

Sega and Gearbox Software’s Aliens: Colonial Marines was a failure for many reasons. Its mechanics were clunky, its A.I. was laughable, and the story barely connected with the larger Alien universe. But most importantly Colonial Marines failed because it was a $60 waste of tremendous potential. However, unbeknownst to the gaming public, a second Alien project was brewing, one that seemingly delivered the experience they had hoped Colonial Marines would be....

Later this week, Bungie will give gamers their first taste (provided they didn’t participate in the first look alpha) of the developer’s upcoming MMO-like shooter Destiny in the form of a two-week-long beta test. The test will launch first on PlayStation platforms starting July 17th, and then will open up to all pre-order holders (i.e. Xbox gamers) on the 23rd. However, while we know for how long the beta will run, up until this point Bungie has yet to reveal what players can expect from the test....

As next-gen console owners around the world await a new wave of games to push the envelope ever forward, BioWare is looking to take advantage with Dragon Age: Inquisition. Set to take the franchise in a bigger, more open-ended direction, the newest batch of screenshots released tease a few new locations players will be able to explore, and the rival factions they can interact with - if they so choose....

It’s been a long road for Techland’s open-world zombie title, Dying Light. The developer’s previous game, Dead Island, sold well but didn’t exactly blow critics away. Its stand-alone expansion, Dead Island Riptide, gave gamers more of the same, doing nothing to solve the clunky combat and repetitive fetch quests that plagued the original. Techland grew increasingly frustrated with the direction the series was taking under publisher Deep Silver, and eventually split off to create their own, supposedly superior, zombie-killing franchise....

For those who are still holding back from buying a PS4, Sucker Punch Productions’ upcoming sandbox superpower game inFAMOUS: Second Son just might be the title that tips the scales. Set in a alternate reality where government fear-mongering over the ‘bioterrorists’ introduced in the previous two games has led to an atmosphere of distrust and sacrifices of liberty, Second Son puts players in the shoes of a rebellious street artist who gets gifted incredible powers, and must decide how he wants to use them....

When Game Rant named Injustice: Gods Among Us as one of our most anticipated games of 2013, we already knew April was the month when we’d be getting our hands on NetherRealm Studios’s and Warner Bros. Interactive’s DC superhero brawler; when we’d be flinging foes around the Fortress of Solitude as Superman, lining our quivers with deadly ammunition as Green Arrow, or rekindling the spiteful animosity between Batman and Bane....

Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor is not just your average Lord of the Rings title. Since its announcement, developer Monolith has reiterated that Shadow of Mordor would hold a darker tone than the main series. Protagonist Talion - a Ranger brought back from the dead by supernatural forces, looking for revenge - has a background closer to The Punisher than The Hobbit. Monolith and publisher Warner Bros. Interactive have been pushing a steady stream of content since revealing the game in November of last year....

Pants shopping just got a little more dangerous with this latest trailer drop. Slaxx, a comedy-horror film headed to the Shudder streaming service, just showed off a brand new look at their original story about jeans that kill, and it’s pretty much what you’d expect from a killer-pants story. The premise of Slaxx, which was acquired by Shudder after premiering at Montreal’s Fantasia International Film Festival in August 2020, is pretty straightforward: a company has designed a special pair of pants that will automatically fit perfectly on whoever wears them....

After months of speculation, fan-favorite developer DICE has revealed that they are currently working on Star Wars: Battlefront - a modern follow-up to the classic LucasArts game series. For nearly half a year Star Wars gamers have been trying to make sense of a sudden cancellation that left Battlefront 3 on the cutting room floor. While Disney’s acquisition of LucasArts caused a lot of anxiety about the fate of in-development projects, and resulted in the untimely abandonment of third-person shooter Star Wars 1313, Battlefront 3 was reportedly 99% complete at the time of its cancellation....

With the end of 2011 quickly approaching, gamers are preparing for the wealth of strong AAA titles that lie on the horizon. First person shooter fans in particular have a lot to be excited for. Among the massive releases slated for the coming months, nostalgic gamers will be happy to hear that they also hold the release date for the upcoming reboot of the popular sci-fi series Syndicate. What started as a simple trademark registry over a year ago, Syndicate has come quite a distance in such a short time....

When we brought gamers the news last week that Battlefield 3 had been struggling to top even Call of Duty: Black Ops on the Xbox Live activity charts, we were a bit behind the curve. But now, with Major Nelson unveiling his Xbox Live charts for the week of November 21st, we are surprised by the placement for a new reason. As expected, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is topping the charts, and sadly Black Ops is still going strong in the number two spot, but what is most impressive is the game that clocks in at number three....

Before last weekend’s PlayStation Experience keynote, the assembled Las Vegas crowd kept asking two questions: how will Uncharted 4 look, and will Sony say anything about The Last Guardian? The respective answers weren’t surprising: pretty damn good, and apparently not. The Last Guardian’s failure to show up wasn’t the keynote’s biggest disappointment; Square-Enix won that contest by teasing the highly-demanded Final Fantasy 7 remake only to reveal a straight port of the original PS1 title....

Although The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt’s delay may have been a disappointing one, it appears that developer CD Projekt Red made the tough decision to ensure they deliver a solid product to their fans. They want to do right by the gamers who have stuck by The Witcher franchise since the beginning, and to show new followers the same consideration. Part of that dedication and respect includes a promise of 16 DLC add-ons for The Witcher 3 that CD Projekt Red will release at no extra charge....

Fans of the cutthroat chaos of demolition derby video games can rejoice. This month, PlayStation released Destruction AllStars, a new entry in the long-forgotten genre for free to all PlayStation Plus subscribers. The game melds sleek traversal controls with intense vehicle combat that is addictive. Those new to this type of game may be eager to leap into the medium. Because PlayStation 5s are in such short supply, those interested in the series may seek alternatives to hold them over until they can grab a PS5 of their own....

Between the base game and the DLC packs, Skyrim offers an adventure that can last for hundreds of hours. Throw in some challenge runs and a few of the many excellent mods that are available for the game and it can run into the thousands. Ultimately though, there’ll come a point where every player has had their fill of Tamriel and is ready for a new adventure. Their first instinct may be to look for another RPG, but, although there are plenty of games that are similar to Skyrim, few are as expansive or as enjoyable....

Fear taps into that part of the brain that makes people feel alive, lighting up the senses and getting the blood flowing. However, some people are more sensitive to the darker side of life, sending them into a downwards spiral or an all-out panic. For those that want to keep excite the system but don’t want to get too deep in the water, the horror genre is a dangerous place to play....

Remnant: From The Ashes is one of those Dark Souls-like games that takes the usual formula and builds upon it in fun ways. Gunfire Games really made something unique with this one, creating a unique experience for both solo and co-op players alike. But, the multiplayer, in particular, just works so well, as long as you learn the ins and outs of it first. Truly, Remnant is a blast of a multiplayer experience for a multitude of reasons, and here are some of the best we could think of....

Fans of the original Harvest Moon and Story of Seasons are happy to have recently received a new game, with Story of Seasons: Pioneers of Olive Town having landed on Nintendo Switch only a few days ago. The game offers more of the same farm/life sim enjoyment that long-time players of the franchise are used to. Whether you’re new to the series or not, there are bound to be a few things that you might miss during your first playthrough, as there’s plenty of additional features and secret content that you can unlock....

Although The Medium isn’t a particularly difficult game, especially if you have played similar titles like Silent Hill or Resident Evil before, there are some aspects of gameplay that aren’t as easy as they first appear to be. Taking part in these elements can usually be improved over time, though there will be many players who will need to play the game multiple times in order to achieve them. Some of these elements are also tied to achievements, giving the player an incentive to get better at the intricacies of The Medium and play the game multiple times in order to see everything the game has to offer....
